This summer we will be moving to Greenville, NC.

Can anyone with knowledge of the area share their likes and dislikes of the area?

Thanks!

Sorry, but I can't help you. Maybe you can help me. I will be moving from NJ to Greenville, SC in May. Can you share your thoughts on the area?

Welcome to upstate SC! I actually live in Easley which is about 10 miles west of Greenville. This is a wonderful area! You are also conveniently located about halfway between Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA. We are just a very short ride to the mountains and a few hours from the coast. Most importantly, we are a 8-9 hour drive from Disney! :thumbsup2 The climate here is relatively mild...not too terribly cold in the winter and not (usually) oppressively hot during the summer. We don't get that much snow or ice but watch out when we do. People around here aren't accustomed to driving in it. :scared1: There are many beautiful lakes in the area also. People in general are very friendly and I feel almost certain you will enjoy the area!

Well, I love it here! I would not move if it was not for DH's income doubling!

We have the best downtown ever, a waterfall runs through it and there are lots of shops and restaurants on tree lined streets and a beautiful park that has Shakespeare plays and bands playing at various times. There is so much to do here, an excellent town for families! One is about four hours from the beaches and about an hour from the mountains. Lots of outdoor activities to do. We have Atlanta less than two hours away, Asheville an hour away and the Riverbanks Zoo is about an hour away in Columbia. We have our own little zoo with a great park outside of it too. Lots of parks for children--Kid's Planet is lots of fun. We have a good children's theater and a children's museum. We have a good variety of restaurants and you can get a good house for not a lot of money. :) You have the four seasons (we originally moved from Fl, so we love that). We have great festivals in and around Greenville--Artisphere is a favorite and Fall in the Park is fun also. :) When you are downtown, take a horse carriage ride and look for the mice on Main. :) We have good hospitals (again, we moved from PCB, FL and we have a special needs child with multiple physical internal defects-heart, spine, ribs, kidneys, etc. It is wonderful not to have to drive to Pensacola or Gainesville constantly, all specialties are minutes from our home).

I will really miss living here...

To the OP - I might be able to help you a bit with Greenville, NC. Greenville is a huge college town (East Carolina), which is why I lived there for several years. There is a lot to do and it is a growing community with just about every store and restaurant you could want. One downside is traffic (Greenville Blvd around 5 o'clock is a nightmare!!). There are lots of bedroom communities like Winterville, Ayden and Farmville that are very nice for families. Greenville (NC) also has an excellent, teaching hospital and there are lots of jobs in the area.

Thank you for your reply!:flower3:

I will really miss Greenville, SC, however I am sure I will like Greenville, NC too. :)

We so far plan on living in Winterville. We are down to one daughter, a 7yo--our other children are grown and gone (almost 23, 22, 21 and 20).

We are looking forward to seeing the OuterBanks and fresh seafood. :) We are hoping there is lots to do for families of elementary aged kids, the good thing is she is growing and will be in college in about 11 yrs, lol.

My dd goes to ECU in Greenville, I personally like the area a lot. I live in a smaller town about 1 and 1/2 hours south and whenever I go there I enjoy myself. Half talked myself into moving there myself! There are tons of places to dine. I do think it is probably a pretty typical 'college' town.

I have several friends and family members who are raising their children in Greenville and there are lots of things to do for families and kids your dd's age. (And an added bonus is you'll have ECU and Pitt Community College close by for when dd goes to college if she wants to stay close by and save a little $$).

Greenville is a little under 3 hours from the OBX. If you would like some recommendations for some of the best seafood there let me know!:)

I was born and raised there. I still work there at that large teaching hospital. ;) If you enjoy going out to bars and that kind of thing you will like it. I don't drink and have no intrest in it. There is a bowling alley,2 movie theaters, a few museums. ECU and PCC are the big colleges. If you like the Pirates then football and baseball games are fun to go to see. (I am NOT a Pirate fan and happy to say I have never been and never want to go.) Traffic is horrible on game days and the major roads (Greenville Bld, Firetower, and Arlington) are horrible at noon and 5pm. There is a small go kart place on the outside of town. (It has seen better days.) The mall is average at best. Greenville is a couple hours from the beach. You can get to Raleigh in about an hour to an hour and a half. There are great restraunts. That's about it. Any other questions just let me know.

You live in Greenville and aren't a Pirate fan?? Blasphemy!!:rotfl:0 Just kidding....I'm thinking about turning in my own sword and eye patch after last week's Military Bowl game:lmao:

No, we are not bar people.

We like doing things as a family and with our church and friends. DD7 has activities with Daisies (Brownies next year), dance, karate, gymnastics and she would like to get into horse riding. On weekends we get together with friends and church activities and would occasionally head to the Outer Banks or Raleigh. I belong to some meetup groups here in Greenville, SC and plan on joining a couple there too. I think local games on occasion would be fun. Oh, we plan on living in Winterville?

My daughter just transferred back home from Winterville. Not sure if you are buying or renting, but the market is slow there also. She bought a new house, picked all the colors and such, but now wishes she had rented as her house has been on the market for a year. It looks like a model home, but still not sold. That being said, the cost of living there as far as real estate is much cheaper than it is here, so if you are buying, you can probably get a great house for less money than you think. Winterville itself and Greenville are really close. There are all the restaurants and shopping you find in most cities. Winterville is very nice and quaint. I loved the area she was in. Almost had a very country, farming type community feel to it. Never felt unsafe. I think you will like it there.

Yes, the housing looks great! :goodvibes DH and I found a Craftsman that we have fallen in love with.

Are there parks, maybe a zoo and such in the area?

I hear the hospital systems are great which is really important. My daughter has VACTERLS Association, an acronym for multiple physical defects (internal in her case) and she sees several doctors. She used to see about eight, but she is down to her nephrologist, GI, Shriners, and one more visit to her cardiologist next year with another great report on her Amplatzer device and she does not need to see him either.

Is there a Shriners in the medical triangle?

I notice they do not have a Little Gym or Snip-its, lol. I am sure they have some gymnastic places and regular haircutters can cut kids hair too.

There is a Roses Gymnaastics. There are some great churches. I go to Calvary Baptist Church which I highly recommend. There are a ton of parks. No zoos. There is River park North which used to have some stuffed animals and a little museum thing but I haven't been in a long time. There they also have a little pond for fishing, hiking trails, volleyball courts. It's nice. The hospital is great. There are some really great doctors in the area. If there is something they can't handle Duke, Wake Med, and UNC chapel hill are not far away. If you have anyone who like to skateboard there is a nice skate park at Jaycee Park. There is also a ice skating rink called Bladez on Ice which is alot of fun. They have hockey leagues and figure skating lessons. I don't have kids so I am sure there is more kid stuff in the area but I don't look for it so I don't know. Winterville is a nice area. I have several friends who live there. I did live in Greenville until I got married. Now I live about 35-40 minutes away. The convention center in greenville is always having some kind of event. That's all I can think of for right now.
