What is the best way to do this? Looking for movies to have available on vacation - renting is really not an option since our trip is 10 days. I have a few older movies that I would like to download and then possibly buy a few more. Best Buy recommended a software called 123 Copy DVD Gold. Is there a cheaper way? Thanks,

There are free software programs for this, but I haven't liked any I have tried. I use WinX DVD Platinum ripper for my iPad, which was well worth the around $20 I paid for it a few years ago.

You can google free DVD rippers and try some of these.

Check out Handbrake. http://www.handbrake.fr It has never failed me. You can rip to a smaller file size for mobile devices, and fit a bunch of movies on a SD card. Oh yeah, it is a free program.

If you are looking to copy your purchased DVDs such as Disney, etc. be aware that most DVDs are encrypted, and you need a program that will decyrpt the DVD before you convert and copy it to your device. Be sure to look for that in whatever software you choose. (There are other programs that will basically copy the image as it plays the movie to your screen, but I don't like the end quality of those.)

I personally use DVD Fab.

We use utorrent.com

Although it takes 24 hours to download a movie I still like the service.

@Shelly ... do you use UTorrent to download directly to your tablet? I use the service on my home PC and it has worked great, and was extremely easy to set up, but I have no clue how to set it up for my Kindle Fire HD - nor do I know if it's even possible to do. Also, I am curious as to why it takes so long to d/l a movie to your tablet (? 24 hours). I can d/l a one-hour show in about 5 to 10 minutes, and my ISP (Verizon) is awful.

Any insight would be helpful for this non-techie, but eager learner.

I just did this recently using "All Free DVD to MP4 converter". Worked great, easy to figure out.

Yes I use it on my tablet. The reason it takes so long is you are aquiring bits and pieces of the movie for several other people who belong to the utorrent group.

I have used both DVD Fab and DVD Catalyst. I honestly like DVD Catalyst better for ripping movies for my tablet. The interface is easy to use and it has a list of most recent device types so it makes sure the format is ideal for your device. In general I have found using a standard quality setting a 2 hour movie is somewhere around 1.2gb. It takes 10-15 minutes to rip a disc and you can then store it directly on the device or on the SD card. DVD Catalyst sells for $9.95 so it's a bargain in my opinion. I have probably ripped around 100 movies so far and watch them on the plane when I travel for work and I think I have only run into 1 so far that gave me a problem.

Slowly but surely I'm getting this... I downloaded DVD catalyst last night and it seems to work great (thanks); however, now that I have my movie on the SD card I can't get it to play on tablet. I think I'm just missing one more step - is there a certain app or place I need to go to view movie. Thanks for helping me conquer this technical mountain.

Well what kind of tablet is it? Some only play certain formats. If you ripped a DVD to an unsupported format it won't play. Just try to google what video formats are supported on your tablet. I know the iPad is mp4, but since you mention SD card I would imagine you don't have an iPad. I would think Android would play every file format, but I think you'll have to figure out which version of that os you are running, and then find out what formats it supports for playback. Can you access other files from the SD card currently? For example, could you put a picture on it, and bring the picture up on your tablet? The SD card may not be able to be accessed by the os, and you would need to move the movie to the internal storage area. The best bet is to google how to play a movie from sd card on "your" tablet. If you managed to rip a DVD, you'll figure this part out as well. You already did the pain in the neck part.

I think I figured it out - totally by accident. But, I think it is working so - thanks everyone for the great help. It will be a great benefit with our 17 hour drive.
