We did this years ago when we purchased a VCR for my grandparents (yeah, ages ago). If I recall we purchased movies like:

Sound of Music
Mary Poppins (to watch with us grandkids)
Gone with the Wind
Meet Me In St. Louis
African Queen
Singing in the Rain
Wizard of Oz

I like the idea of some tv shows that she might have enjoyed watching over the years. You could find some from a multitude of decades that are wholesome.

Golden Girls (another one that she enjoyed)

My Mom lives alone in a senior apartment complex. There really isn't anything that she needs or wants for Christmas. So we have decided to get her a DVD player for Christmas.

I am looking for movies that you think might be appropriate for an 86 year old woman -- it has to have very, very little or no profanity.

The only ones that immediately come to mind are some old Elvis movies -- I know she use to love to watch those.

If you get Miracle on 34th Street, make sure you get the real one, not one of the remakes.

My mom and dad liked Sarah, Plain and Tall.

Even some of the old Disney films - Pollyanna (has Jane Wyman in it). Thomasina.

My mom is 73 and loves westerns. She has some Bonanza and Gunsmoke DVDs that she watches over and over. How about some other old TV series that she might like? My in-laws were both into Perry Mason and Dragnet reruns. Most of the old shows are on DVD now.

Also - does she like musicals? Some of the old musicals like Oklahoma, Camelot and The King and I might be on DVD. You can also look into concert DVDs from some of her favorite singers. I'll bet you can find Lawrence Welk. My mom watches those all the time too.

Haha!!! That's the movie I was thinking of when I saw the title of this thread. I was thinking about "Say Anything"
