Movie ticket prices increasing this weekend

Our theaters here only went up 50 cents per ticket. Most of the movies coming out now though are 3D -- especially the ones the kids want to see which increases the price. I can live without 3-D. We Saw Alice In Wonderland in 3-D and with the exception of the ending, I could have easily been as happy with the regular film as the 3-D was very subtle in most of the movie.

My sister and her husband went to the movies last night. She hasn't gone to the movies in a long time. They paid for their tickets and got popcorn and soda and said it was close to $40. She said to my mom today "how do kids afford to date anymore?" That's so true. It is way too expensive. If DH and I go to the movies we go to a matinee and definitely don't get snacks. And it has to be a movie we really really want to see. The prices are insane and keep getting insaner (ok, not really a word, but fitting in this situation! :lmao:)

I heard in my area tickets are going up to 15 dollars. The 3-D part of Alice in Wonderland was a big let down and I basically paid 24 dollars for a headache. :rotfl2:

I hear ya! I didn't like Alice in Wonderland AT ALL. we didn't have to pay the extra for 3D for that movie (our theater was doing a special matine price)...so we saw it. But I'm happy I didn't pay more than I did for that one!

I saw How to Train Your Dragon today at 3D matinee, ($9.50 for an adult ticket, $8.50 for a child ticket) I have to say the 3D in this movie was really amazing. I loved the movie and think it would be good in 2D or 3D, but I'm glad I went for 3D.

However...........in a post above I mentioned I thought $3.75 for a medium soda was OUTRAGEOUS, that was the price when we went to go see Alice in Wonderland last week...TODAY the price for the same medium soda was $4.50!!!!!!!!! :scared1: It went up 75 cents from last week! I couldn't believe it. :sad2:

I would be ecstatic if that was the price for a medium drink here! I understand in the city, drinks being more but I live in the burbs and when I went to purchase a small Coke, it was $5.50. Medium was $6.25 and large $6.75. They used to have a smaller child size soda but they don't anymore... nor do they have that size in popcorn.

It looks like they only went up $0.75 here. They're still pricing themselves too high, IMO. We spend quite a bit on entertainment each year. We used to go to the movies about once a week. Last year, we went about once a month. This year, unless something fabulous comes out that I haven't heard about yet, we'll see a whopping 3 movies in theaters (Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3, and Harry Potter). We just wait for the movies to come out on Netflix now.

We've been going to a lot of concerts and plays and such instead. Last night, for example, we went to the roller derby (only $8, so $2 cheaper than a movie and much longer too, since it was a double header). Then we went to a bar that had a live band and no cover charge. Then there's the added bonus of being able to get a 32 oz margarita for the same price as a coke at the movie theater. :thumbsup2

I'm not a big movie person to begin with, or concert/show either, but these are my only MUST sees this year... and Eclipse. Otherwise, I really doubt I'm going to be going to see anything else.

3-D movie prices here are $8.50...I thought THAT was expensive! Some people pay that (or more) just to see a regular movie! YUCK. It's not worth it for me to spend $40 for my family to go to 1 movie! AND THAT'S BEFORE the over-priced popcorn, pop and candy. I cannot allow myself to spend that kind of money on something that is sooooo much cheaper to get on DVD in a few months. I'll stay home and pop my own popcorn thank you very much!!!

?

Wow- I just saw alice in wonderland and it was 16.50 a ticket!! I would love to be paying 8.50!
We try to do the free movie nights from optimum on Tuesdays if at all possible. If you have phone, tv and internet from optimum you get free movie nights on Tuesdays at a local theater- we saw alice in wonderland in imax 3d but now we will go again this week to see it for free movie night since we really liked it. The bounty hunter is also there so that is on the slate for the following Tuesday! They also have a deal on popcorn/soda for optimum members- cost like 9.00 for a medium popcorn and medium soda- thats a pretty good deal for around here! The Imax theater is like 7.00 for the popcorn alone!

I love movies. I go, I rent, I stream, love them and watch a ridiculous number too. Thast said I have been steadily reducing the number of movies we see as a family of 4 because these days, a afternoon movie including snacks is at least a $50 outing. So now if I want to see something i check out Rotten Tomatoes and unless it's 70% or better I skip it... unless it's someone I love or a series I love like Robert Downey Jr or Star Trek. If it doesn't rate high or have people I love I skip it and wait for DVD. Even so I probably spend quite a good deal on all parts of the movie industry in any given year.

That said I have to say I am baffled by the decision to raise prices. The reason why people aren't going is money is tight and most American's can't afford to go. The industry is looking to raise the prices to increase profits. Profits can just as easily be increased by filling empty seats via expanding hours to earlier in the day with Sr. discounts and reducing prices. What about reducing seat prices for poorly preforming films?

The dollar store has be humming along with record profits despite the economy. How is it none of these decision makers in these industries manage to notice the sucess? How come they don't get that the lower the price the more people that can afford it? You can make $100 through 10 people giving $10 each or 20 giving $5 each but since more have $5 than $10 the second option is more likely to be a sucess due to volume. It's the most basic Supply and Demand principle yet industry after industry ignores it. Plain foolishness. How is it these people get into their jobs without understanding even the most basic laws regarding people and their money? I really don't get it.

I saw How to Train Your Dragon in 3D today matinee. It was $8.75. Evening show would be $10.75. Our theaters did not raise their prices. I guess I will be happy with our prices considering what some people are paying. I love the 3d films, and will continue to pay extra to see them. If it ever went to $15 a ticket though, I might think twice.
