Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

At Costco. :) I was replying to the person said that her Costco didn't sell it, just in case it was hidden in the back like at "mine". :goodvibes

OK, so the mexican Coke is near the beer at your Costco. Is it bottles or cans? Just want to know to see if I can find it at mine, although at mine, the liquor store is separate from the regular store and I don't think I've ever seen pop there.

It's bottles. Very pretty glass bottles! At ours, the sign even says "with cane sugar" or something like that.

My goodness it tastes good and is so much more satisfying than the "normal" coke. Reminded me of how it tasted in high school; we have a friend who is a CocaCola collector, and he verified for us that the sweetener used back before the "New Coke" fiasco was sugar, not HFCS, and that HFCS showed up at some point after "Classic" coke was put on the shelves (conspiracy so we had forgotten the difference in taste? maybe...).

Anyway, it tastes different.:)

Wow I must be loopy today b/c none of that had anything to do with your question, which I think I could have just answered and not blathered!

It's totally ok! I remember the day my best friend called me up when she came back from vacation in high school. The place she had just visited had stopped selling new Coke before our city did, and she brought me a 6 pack of Classic. I was ecstatic! Now of course I know it's not the same. I was in Mexico last summer and the coke was so good, I thought maybe it was just cuz it was so darn hot down there.

I read the side of my Diet Coke can and didn't see any sugars.

Diet Pepsi as well is okay. I have food allergies and it can be found in almost everything. I can't eat wheat either. Diet coke, D. Pepsi, Coke Zero, etc are the only sodas that I can drink. Wheat makes me sleepy and puffy ; corn gives me headaches and eventually I end up with a bad sinus infection. That's how the doctor tested me for allergies. I was in fuzz zone all the time.

For fruit snacks, my kids LOVE Fruitabu

http://www.fruitabu.com/

They aren't shaped, but they don't seem to miss the shapes anymore. And this is coming from a family that would buy the bulk packs of fruit snacks at Sam's Club.

I haven't posted to this thread in forever, but I've been following it along and this post caught my eye. My 4yo DS loves his fruit snacks, roll-ups, etc. and they're really convenient to tuck in my purse for outings, I didn't think about how unhealthy they were until this thread started, I've been looking at his diet as a possible cause of behavior problems.

Anyway, this is a long way of saying I ordered from fruitabu and got them today. DS likes them, YAY! I think they're really good, too. My kids don't like fruit leather, but I guess they'll eat anything you peel off a paper roll :rotfl: . My 10yo didn't care for them, but he'd rather just have fresh fruit anyway. So thanks for the suggestion :thumbsup2 .

Yeah! Glad at least some like them. You might want to experiment with different flavors. Everyone in the family here loves the raspberry ones, but only some like apple (my dd can't stand it)

If you'd like, I can pick you up one of each flavor next time I'm at Whole Foods (which will likely be tomorrow) and mail them to you so you can all trial all the flavors. Just PM me if you're interested.

Thank-you so much for offering, that's very nice of you, but I bought three different flavors to try already so I think we're good for now :) . We started out with grape because that's usually a favorite flavor here. ETA: I got the fruit twirls.

Thanks for the Fruitabu link! Two stores out here carry them, so I'm going to try to find them this week. It looks like the twirls will work - more like the stuff his friends are eating. He'll only eat the fruit leather if I cut it into tiny bite sized pieces. (Which is fine, but a lot of work for a snack sometimes!)

Are Fruitabu really good? I picked up some fruit leather and my son did not like it. He is pretty picky though. He doesn't like fruit roll ups either, but he likes fruit snack.
I am really leary of trying the fruitabus!

I just had a minute maid soft frozen lemonade that I found in the freezer from LAST summer. Not only did it not have any freezerburn, it also didn't have HFCS. It did have "regular" corn syrup in it though, but I still enjoyed it.

I buy the Fruitabu fruit leather, too. It is really good! I bought the roll ups, too, and I do NOT like those. I thought they had a really funky taste to them. A friend of mine at work buys the Archers Farm organic ones (target brand) and they are HFCS free, but we haven't had any in for weeks.

I just came back from my first Trader Joes trip. I found they had white breads (for my kids) but they were not at all soft. I did buy one White Whole Wheat that didn't seem too bad. Then I went to Costoc and they had 2 huge double loaves of really really soft White Wheat bread with no HFCS! No Mexican coke though.

Do you guys find decent hot dog or hamburger buns? The ones at Trader Joes were really heavy and not at all soft, didn't even seem appealing to me, and my kids sure wouldn't eat them.

We  Martin's potato rolls www.potatoroll.com for hot dog & hamburger buns. I don't know if they're nationwide or not. I even started buying Martin's whole wheat bread w/o HFCS this week. Will check out Costco for their stuff next time I go. :thumbsup2

How long does it take after eliminating HFCS to notice a difference in the way you feel? I'm starting today, but just wondering when I should notice a difference? Thanks for all the helpful info here!!! I was really clueless before reading this thread!

I cut out Coke and Dr. Pepper last September. It took a while, I quit cold turkey, and had a Dr. Pepper at about 1 month out, it turned me into a raging monster, I was very angry and agitated. I drank 1 coke about 2 months ago at dinner, and had a terrible stomach ache and headache. I'm CURED! I drink water, decaf coffee drinks at Starbucks, and occasionally a chai tea latte. That probably has caffeine. I can really tell when they screw up my coffee and make it caf! I am really jittery about an hour later, but it does go away!

I feel much calmer on the inside now, it's hard to describe. Before, it felt like I was always "on" and now I feel relaxed. I don't yell at my kids nearly as much, and I let things go much more easily now.

I have cut out hfcs, I buy ketchup, bread, etc. without it, things like that. I do still buy Hungry Jack pancake syrup, the real stuff is just too darn expensive, and they only get a little bit. I have switched to mainly eggs instead of cereal/pancakes/waffles for breakfast, or I make them eat both. My kids are 6 & 4. I focus on fats and proteins with them instead of carbs.

I had a similar experience as Bumbershoot with my son, not nearly as extreme though. He is 4 and is much calmer now that I have cut out soda and hfcs. But, some of this has to do with the maturity that comes naturally from 3-4 years old! He is so cute, if I say something isn't healthy, he'll ask if it has hfcs in it, but it doesn't come out exactly right!

A few weeks ago DH let him have a root beer with cane sugar, and he was bouncing off the walls. For my son, I think it's sugar and carbs in general, and not specific to corn.

I am 5'6" and weight 137lbs. No weight has come off, much to my dismay! I just tell myself I don't have any weight to lose!! I'm 37. I am going to buy a pair of Spanx soon though, cuz I really don't think it's going anywhere! Since January I've been exercising, weight training, and doing pilates 3-5 times a week. I do look better, but I think this is just me, and I'm not going to weigh 120lbs ever again! And I don't eat fast food, a ton of carbs, or anything!!

But, I am still glad I did it. Now I am to the point of not wanting to pour sugar down my throat! I did the izze sodas for a while, and sweet tea. Now it's pretty much water.

You know that weight is just a number right? If your 137 pounds is from muscle, you're going to look better and feel better then the woman who is 137 pounds and carrying that in fat.

You could be 120 pounds and be in the worst shape of your life. Don't let that number rule you. Check your BMI, your age, your shape and your overall fitness level.

 You go girl! You're gonna be fab-ulous!

We stopped HFCS in January, except for my Coke and Dr Pepper. I finally gave those up a few weeks ago. What I've noticed is that I no longer crave a Coke mid-afternoon like I used to (every single day, I would want one - and more often than not, I would give in). I'm hoping someday I will not even want the cane sugar/sucrose sodas - and you give me hope. :goodvibes

Since quitting HFCS, I've noticed that my DS13 (who never was a soda drinker) is much less likely to fly off the handle and yell at us now. He does still have that 13 year old attitude every once in a while and argues with his dad (usually over who is right when doing algebra!) but he's so much calmer now. Makes it well worth the extra effort to be HFCS-free! :cool1:

Can't remember who asked about hamburger and hot dog buns, but it seems to be very difficult to find decent ones. We've tried ones from Whole Foods and a few different kinds from Trader Joe's and there are ones we will eat, but they aren't great. I'm considering ordering the special pans from the King Arthur Catalog so I can make my own.

It sounds like you're doing all the right things! :thumbsup2 I bet you'll see a big difference in your cholesterol and blood pressure at your next physical. I'm mildly overweight because of challenges with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), but I work out daily and eat a healthy diet...and my heartrate, blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels now show it. And franky, after fighting the "PCOS pounds" for so many years, I'm happy with my body. Will I be wearing a bikini anytime soon - NOPE - but that's alright in my book! I feel great and can lap WDW without getting tired! And girl...137 pounds at 5'6" sounds pretty darn skinny to me! LOL!!
