Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

I am going to start avoiding food products with HFCS in them too. It's sad that many brands of light fat-free yogurts that HFCS in them, such as the Yoplait brand.

Today I was at Publix and decided to see if the Publix brand fat-free yogurts had HFCS in them - it turns out they don't, but they contain fructose. Is fructose alone just as bad, or is it okay?

Try Sarabeth Jam, its an award winning jam that you find at higher end grocery stores, Williams Sonoma and Sur la Table. Sometimes you can find it at TJ Maxx and Home Goods stores for a good discount. Its the best jam with real sugar. Right now in my fridge I have Chunky Apple and its ingredients are Apples, Sugar, Lemon Juice and spices. My favorite flavor is Peach Apricot.

I'm lucky because I work in a store that sells it, along with other foods without HFCS.

I was sad to see Special K had it as an ingredient, but I found Kashi to be even better.

I try to shop at Whole Foods as much as possible too. Their store brand peanut butter is delicious, the ingredients are Peanuts and Salt.

I feel better, less tired and have felt my pants loosen up when I started being more conscientous about the food my daughter and I eat.

Great Thread!:flower3:

From what I've read Fructose alone, and Corn Syrup alone, are OK. It would probably be ideal to avoid those too, but they are not the fake chemical that HFCS is. If you google HFCS and start reading up on it, it is truly scary. :scared1:

The less packaged, pre-prepared products you buy, the less HFCS you get in your diet. Bake your own cookies, buy only Italian or French bread from a bakery, skip anything that isn't in its natural form. It's just a healthier way to live. The effects of all the additives and preservatives can't be good in the long run.

my DM found out a couple of years ago she was allergic to corn. She had been sick for years and had been to doctor after doctor. She finally found one who told her that her body was full of yeast and she was just fighting one infection after another.

She had her undergo allergy testing and among other things she found she was allergic to corn. As you know corn is in everything. She eliminated it from her diet and lost a great deal of weight, she wasn't heavy to begin with, but now she is downright thin.

Her body is now functioning and she is feeling better than she has in years. I really try to watch what we eat, my kids are much better than I am at it I hate to admit. My DS works at McDonalds and only eats the salads without the dressings for all of the meals that he eats there and my oldest DS pretty much just eats all natural foods. Its DH and I that are the worst about eating junk.

This is one of the reasons my friend that has the corn allergy loves to travel to Europe. Their coke products don't have HFCS in them! They use just sugar and she can have those.

Kimya

I read an article about Coke a couple of years ago in Parade. It seems they use pure cane sugar for their sodas distributed outside of the US.

You can buy these Coke products in some Latino markets. They come in the small bottles like they did years ago. They keep them behind the counter so you have to ask for them.

I tried this a few years ago and became very discouraged and quit trying. :sad1: Maybe it is time to re-investigate.

But the way of life has changed since then. When I was a young child - in the early 70's - my parents would send me out of the house and tell me to come home when the street lights come on. So I was out running around for hours. Kids now adays don't get one quarter of the exercise that we did.

It took into account the way things have changed. More kids than you think still run and play outside or participate in gym, cheering, football, soccer, baseball, basketball, etc.
There are more opportunities today for kids to participate in athletics than there were 30 years ago.

I'll have to re-check the eggos nutrigrain ingredient list- the last time I checked the whole product line has HFCS- is this new?

I double checked- have some in the freezer right now. Eggo Nutrigrain Blueberry waffles made with 100% whole grain have no HFCS.... thank goodness. These are the only thing ds5 will eat for breakfast right now.

That is awesome news!!! We haven't had eggos in ages!!! :cool1:

:goodvibes Yes I was pleased as well when I found this out. I've been buying them for a while but by the time I started checking the labels for HFCS, it wasn't in them. I also pleased that the bread I've been buying for years was one of the only (if not the only one) in our grocery store without it -Natures Own whole wheat.

Hey- enjoy those Eggos! :thumbsup2

Here's the thing..... I'm not at a concerned about sugars...most especially cane sugar(prefer the natural colored stuff though) or fruit sugars, like fructose....honey,maple syrup...it's not the sugars that normal bodies have a problem with...HFCS is chemically altered,it's nasty stuff,I consider it as insidious as partially hydrogenated products-
I like Stonyfield or Trader Joes brand yogurts for taste and good ingredients though-
Trader Joes has a great jam- all fruit and pure sugar, and 2.99 for a big jar..... But again,I shy away from the 'all fruit' jams b/c of info I'd read on those darned 'natural' flavors that ain't so ;'natural'......:confused3
If it isn't one thing,it's another!:rotfl:

My DD3 is allergic to corn, amoung other this and it is very difficult to eliminate it from your diet. I wonder as people latch on the the HFCS issue if they are still using equal, nutrasweet, splenda, etc These are just like the HFCS in that they are chemicals or chemically altered material.

Does he eat his waffles plain or does he pour syrup on them (made with you-know-what)? Mrs. Buttersworth has a good tasting sugar-free syrup.

My downfall is that I'm a pb&j addict. I've tried the sugarless fruit spreads and always fall back to the Smuckers made with tons of sugar!

but its in EVERYTHING - even what they call organic or natural.

I have found bread but not ketchup. even heinz refuses to take it out of their so called organic ketchup. I have a really nasty email from the Heinz corporation about the MYTH surrounding high fructose corn syrup - and how people need to reframe from over eating.

I had sent them a request, even said I would be willing to pay more for a quality ketchup with out high-fructose corn syrup. With it I sent two articles that said, high fructose corn syrup chemically, makes you hungrier, and the high content consumed unknowingly, has been pin pointed as the probable cause of diabeties. I made them angry.

Hmmm...HFC is not in organic Heinze ketchup. The organic does have sugar though.

I don't buy anything that says HFC or trans fats/partially hydrogenated oils. Kids have accepted that there are certainthings mommy doens't buy anymore. I didn't buy my mallomars this year!!

I was also shocked when I found out HFC was in the whole wheat bread I have been feeding my kids for years. I was very disappointed. I have bought archer farms breads, and I know buy Wegmans, their whole wheat and potato have no HFC. I buy lots of organic treats, Aunt annies bunny grahams, organic graham crackers. Lots of yummy organic treats out there. Yes I am paying more, but my kids are healthier.

If you want coke products without HFC, stock up during the Passover holidays. Their producsts of kosher for passover so they can't use CORN!!! It is made with sugar. Thankfully the chocolate syrup I have used since childhood is still made the same way, sugar. U-bet is the best!!

I now always read a label before I buy anyhting in the grocery store. Hopefully manufacturers will wise up, and take out the HFC and put back normal sugar!

I think I may try this. What can I eat? I mean I still gatta use up the food we have but We need to go shopping soon. Are there any sodas that dont contain HFCS? I would be lost without at least one soda.

WOW!!!! I looked in our fridge (please keep in mind im a college studet)
The soda shelf is out
The ketchup
The Choclate sauce
The whip cream
The milk duds :(
The malt beverages
The easter candy...

Only HFCS free thing is the Oj and water WOW
