We have left tips for mousekeeping every morning, and twice now (out of 4 mornings) we have come back to our room to find the tip still sitting right where we left it.
We left a note with it that said " For Mousekeeping-thank you".
This last time the note was thrown away, room was cleaned. and the $$ was left just lying there.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea why mousekeeping is not picking up their tips?

On our last trip we left cash on dresser and they did not get. The following day we left a note and money was taken. It's weird they didn't take when you had a note clearly stating it was for them.

FWIW, we were told years ago unless the tip is left on the pillow the housekeeper will not take it. We had the same problem you did. I always left the tip on the night stand or the dresser but it wasn't being taken. Ever since I started leaving it on the pillow it's always been taken.

That's good to know! Thanks!

Over the last few days I left a tip with a note on the table, they took it and on the first day left a nice thank you note.

It's possible that the housekeeper isn't familiar with the phrase Mousekeeping. That's mostly an Internet forum/fan title for Disney Housekeepers. And the possibility of a language barrier may not help (?).

YMMV[/QUOTE]
Yes, I have read that too. If English is not their first language, they may have no idea what "mousekeeping" is and may decide not to take the envelope. After all, "mousekeeping" is a made up name.

So are we expected to tip housekeeping? I haven't been and now I feel bad!

Contractually at Disney, housekeeping is paid more instead of accepting tips. For various reasons many feel the need to tip anyway. We don't tip housekeeping or bus or boat drivers.

Hotel industry wide, it is understood that tip money should be left on a pillow. It will rarely be taken if left anywhere else.

At least you know you have an honest housekeeper

I've had the tips not taken if I leave it on the dresser or table even though I left a note with it. It's always been taken if I leave it on the bed.

I wonder if the housekeepers are more cautious about taking tips after the one housekeeper was caught and arrested. Granted in that situation, she was taking money from a drawer so there was no question it wasn't meant to be a tip. But I could see how that would make other housekeepers more worried about taking any money from a room.

Thanks for all your replies!
We've been coming here for years, staying at several different resorts, and there has always been a little card with the housekeeper's name on it on the counter in the sink area. I always leave a few dollars under the card with a note saying "thank you" and it is always taken.

This is the first time there hasn't been a card with the housekeeper's name on it, and the first time tips haven't been taken.

Again today I just got back to my clean room and money still sitting where I left it.

I guess I will just save it all up and leave it on the day I check out, with a note.

It is customary in the US to tip hotel housekeeping just like restaurant servers and cab drivers.

We leave it by the TV in an envelope clearly marked. It's never not been taken.

It is customary to tip housekeeping in hotels in America, just like we tip waiters. They get very low wages, even at Disney.

Sometimes you will find a prepared envelope for tips in your resort room, but not always. We tip housekeeping every night, leaving the money out on a table with the note "Tip for Housekeeping". It has always been taken. Leaving it on the bed is a good idea, too.

I recommend tipping nightly, because it might not be the same housekeeper each night. Sometimes they rotate.

Housekeeping does accept tips. As a PP mentioned, some resort rooms even have Disney-prepared tip envelopes laid out, to make tipping easier. This was the case for us at the Grand Floridian and the Yacht Club last summer, for example. And when we forgot to tip before check-out once at the Polynesian, after check-out we went to the front desk to leave the tip for our specific housekeeper. They (management who sent the tip on to the housekeeper) understood & appreciated it & did not comment in any way that tipping housekeepers is not customary at Disney.

It is customary nationwide, although a lot of hotel guests aren't aware, because people stay at hotels less frequently than they eat at restaurants. More experienced travelers tend to be more familiar with this etiquette rule.

Exactly. I hate how people on these boards constantly say "Disney housekeeping is not a tipped position, and they are not supposed to take tips." That is just blatantly false. They are not a position that RELIES on tips to make up for an absurdly low wage like servers, but it IS a position where tips are expected and appreciated, like a bellhop, valet, DME driver, etc. Housekeepers provide a service. In America, service providers are generally tipped. Housekeepers are literally cleaning up your mess...give them a few bucks per day to thank them.

In my world the fact that someone made something a custom doesn't mean that I feel obligated to go with the masses. Disney and the unions decided which positions are tipped and which are not and the employees agreed to the terms of their employment contract. Is it fair that housekeepers are paid more and they are tipped when the toilet cleaner in the parks is paid less and never tipped? I also do not tip other positions unless they earn it, not just doing their regular job, doing something extra. IMO business owners should pay a fair wage and not be able to under pay with tips making up the difference.
