What an awful feeling to come back to your room in the middle of the afternoon only to find your door has been left open! We were very lucky that nothing was stolen from our room - in particular - my laptop.

After calling the front desk, a manager came to see us within 5 minutes and used a special electronic card thing to see which card was last inserted in our lock. He apologized and assured us it rarely happens and told me my laptop would be safe in our room and not to worry about it.

I hate when that happens. Glad that nothing bad came of it.

I am assuming it happened to you also? If so, did you have anything missing?

BTW - checked your photos from 2006 - nice pics :sunny:

It's never happened to me at WDW, but rather at other hotels. I used to travel on business 200+ days a year, and at least once or twice a year, I found some problem like that when I got back to my room. I never lost anything, but then again I never left anything valuable behind in my room.

Even when they remember to close the door when they are finished, it is common practice for the Mousekeeping CMs to open 3 or 4 rooms at the same time, prop open the doors with the latch bars, and move back and forth between them as they work. Sometimes this leaves 3 or 4 rooms in a row open for as long as 20-30 minutes in the middle of the day.

Don't check your brain at the edge of Disney property. Walt wanted his parks to cause the suspension of disbelief, not the suspension of intelligent thought - you are still staying in a hotel, no matter how many hidden Mickeys or giant dalmations it may have, and at any hotel there are certain things you should do to keep yourself and your belongings secure.

NEVER leave any valuable items out in a hotel room. Laptops should be locked with a cable to something secure, camera equipment should be put into the safe, or if it doesn't fit, burried under dirty clothes someplace, and unless you're dining at V&A or attending a wedding or other dress-up function, you shouldn't even bring your expensive jewelry with you to WDW (if you do, you can either leave it in the room safe or the resort safe behind the front desk).

WDW employs tens of thousands of people, hundreds of which have free and easy access to your room at any given time. Only a fool would believe that every single CM is 100% trustworthy, not to mention the professional theives who work a resort like WDW, looking for easy access like rooms that are proped open by the Mousekeepers.

Exercise the same basic, reasonable precautions at WDW that you would in any hotel anywhere in the world, and you will remain reasonably secure in your person and your effects.

That's actually common practice nationwide.

Excellent advice! :thumbups2

OMG I would have been so pissed. I wouldnt have freaked becasue accidents can happen. I would be glad nothing was stolen. But you can bet I would have hidden everything after that. I hope it doesnt happen again.

Very Good Advice Indeed! It was the latch bar that kept the door open.

Our laptop was locked in its case and hidden in the drawer. I realize however that it still could have been stolen. I considered keeping it at the front desk each day but decided that I would take my chances because of the bother of having to go and get it each evening and return it in the morning. We had all other valuables locked in the small safe. We were lucky - simple as that.

After it happened we refused mousekeeping for the next 3 days and fetched our own towels and soap.

I will buy a lock and cable for our next trip as I still don't want the hassle of leaving my laptop at the front desk.

We were not pissed - just shocked. Of course if anything had of been stolen it would be a different story. I posted my situation so that other people are aware that these "rare" occurrences DO happen even at WDW :sad2:
