I just read on mousinfo.com that DCL is going to start running out of LA. I have not been able to find a press release, but the rumors and discussion are flying over there.
At this point, it's really just a rumor. I would think eventually this will happen, but not, in all likelihood, until they've built a third ship. I'd say 2006 is probably best-case.
DCL is not having any problems filling their two current ships out of Port Canaveral, and they're already taking bookings into 2005. So while they can always re-position one of their existing ships, there's really no good business reason for them to do so, especially if they'd have to cancel sailings for which they've already taken bookings.
For those of us who spend more time at Disneyland than WDW, there is a web site called MiceAge that is mostly critical of the way the Disneyland resort has been run over the past decade (and it's usually an interesting read, and frequently right on as to what is happening or going to happen).
In todays update they (Al actually) talked about the possibility of the Magic moving to the west coast for Disneylands 50th anniversary. Here is a link to the article. The rumor about the Magic is in a section called "Bobbing Along" which come just after a picture of the Main Street Cinema and Toontown. MiceAge - Magic to the West Coast
I think the DCL needs a ship on the west coast. We have season passes to Disneyland. Now, I want season passes to a CAlifornia Disney ship! Calling Michael Eisner right now! I am going to tell him to hurry it up already!
Cruisin' with Disney out of LA sound pretty good, but I'm thinking that I really would like to be on the repositioning cruise if at all possible.
I hope that Disney does it!! I really think that Disney could have 1 ship on the west coast and 3 on the east coast without "diluting" the experience and without having to discount their product (or offer many, many more free room upgrades).
In all honesty, it makes much more sense to bundle disneyland with a cruise then disneyworld as it is nearly impossible to see half of wdw in 3 days, but all of disneyland in 3 days isn't hard at all, and follow that up with 4 days at sea and you're set.
this rumor seemed to be flying rampant on the latest disney cruise but I don't see them taking one of the Florida ships and moving it because Florida needs two ships and I know that a new ship would have more amenities etc, and it would really eat into the older ships business. Now putting that brand new ship out in california would make sense. Also of note, of the 5 hypothetical itineraries on the latest cruise questionnaire, 3 were west coast, 1 was bermuda and 1 was the mediterranean. Guess they are seriously looking at the west coast, if they haven't already made that commitment.
I would agree with Tigfanjeff here, DL could use a boost in attendance and land/sea packages could help attendance in California.
We've never been to DL, but would do a land/sea package in an instant from there if it became available. Always wanted to do a cruise out of LA down to Mexico, this would be the perfect excuse.
Even if DCL did move west, I wouldn't guess that it could be done by 2005. DCL would have to have a new boat in Florida before they would move one to California.
The left coast is very pro-environmental and I can not see them letting Disney have one of the islands off of California. I do not know if there are islands off the coast of Mexico that could be had. Also, unlike Florida and the Bahamas, I would not want to be swimming in the pacific in the winter time. Don't know how the water temps are down by Cabo...
I am all caught up in the idea of saving up some money and just taking off for a 3 or 4 day weekend on the DCL...sigh..l.
There are many islands off the coast of Baja, but as was already stated, the water's cooooold in the winter, and not that warm in the summer!
It is exciting, though!
I don't see why they have to have a new ship at Florida before they put a ship on the West Coast. Afterall, a plan previously was for the Med wasn't it? The Magic was going to go for a trial just for the Summer season as I recall.
They could easily do the same for California for a few months...to test the waters so to speak
