Mouse keeping tipping

We leave $5 per day. Before we go I have created little envelopes with Micky Mouse ears drawn here and there on it. And make sure I put in big letters: "FOR: MOUSEKEEPING" and "Thanks!"

I have to ask, and am not trying to start an argument or be rude. Is this something that you do uniquely (maybe a word) at Disney resorts, or do you tip at all hotels this way for housekeeping? I travel a good bit in my work, and have never tipped a housekeeper, although I do tip bellman, etc. I always tip waiters and waitresses, but again these are people that depend on tips.

I think that it is becoming more popular (for lack of a better term) to tip all housekeepers. I typically stay in Hilton brand hotels and they now leave an envelope in the room for the purpose of tipping the housekeeping.

Don't feel it's required, it's not. According to the union contract, available online, this is a non-tipped position and these positions are paid above minimum wage by more than a bit. So, if you want to that's fine, but it's not required and they won't be offended not getting a tip.

If this is unique to Disney, I am just curious as to why. I have never seen anything of particular difference in the way the hotel rooms at Disney are cleaned any more than when I stay at Westin or Mariott.

I have been leaving tips for housekeepers at hotels my entire adult life. I don't if the service is particularly poor, but we've made a habit of leaving a few dollars on our way out of a hotel room as a thank you—often there is an envelope in some hotels (not WDW) specifically for this purpose. I don't think Disney housekeeping is the best I've encountered (we usually stay deluxe), but it is far from the worst. I don't have firsthand knowledge of what a hotel housekeeper makes, but I will venture to say that they don't earn any more than other people you mention you do tip (bellmen, etc), and it's certainly tiring, physical labor.

^^I leave the same $5 envelope when we stay at OKW. And as others have mentioned, this is not mandatory, and left to the discretion of each family. It is just something nice to do. I love when I get back to the room and someone has made an attempt to make our stay better. Once we had a bunch of ride photos stacked on the coffee table, and housekeeping displayed them all for us up on top of the dresser. I thought that was sweet!

My family and I, Are staying at cbr next year and I've noticed a few people mention daily tips for mouse keeping. Is this something I should be doing ? I was planning on leaving something at the end of the holiday, is that better or should it be daily ?
Also, how much is the normal ? I had seen someone mentioned they left boxes of chocolates every day, is that a better idea ? Thanks

It's entirely up to you. We usually leave a dollar each day on each pillow (the two we use, not on each of the eight or so they have in the rooms..lol) when we leave for the parks, and leave a five dollar bill on each pillow (again the two we use) on checkout day.
But if you stay DVC for cash or points, you won't have service each day (unless requested and paid for) so keep that in mind if you go that route.

If you stay on a cash reservation through Disney Reservation Center at a DVC resort, you are treated just like a hotel guest with daily full cleaning. If you stay on a cash or points reservation through DVC, you get limited housekeeping services. Seven nights or fewer and you get your trash removed and towels replaced on day four. If you stay eight nights or more, you get a full cleaning on day four and trash removed and towels replaced on day eight.

But housekeeping is considered a non-tipped position based on their agreement with the union. Tips are not required to make up a full wage like they are with Bell Services, Valet Parking and Food & Beverage Servers. Those positions are tipped positions.

However, if your housekeeper goes out of his/her way to do something special, like clean up a big, accidental mess, tipping would be appropriate. But for regular services, no tipping is required.

My Mom was a housekeeper/chambermaid (shows how long ago it was that they were called 'chambermaids') at various hotels in Wildwood, New Jersey for years, so I have a good idea of what a housekeeper does. Tips were always *very* appreciated, and so I leave 5 dollars a day and 10 on checkout day because they have to turn the room over for the next guest.

I'm the same as several PPs. I've learned from the DIS: if you're going to tip, do it every day because staff may change. $1 per person per day plus $1 "for the room" is the most common amount I've heard (eg 4 people in the room = $5/day). As a solo, I leave $3 a day because $2 just seems small to me (just my feeling, not criticizing). I leave the money "loose" on the shelf over the sinks, under the card with the housekeeper's name. This year, for the first couple of days I left a little hand-written "Thank you, housekeeping" note on top of it, then just started leaving the $s in that spot with no note - they took it every day. FWIW, I'd never heard of tipping hotel housekeeping anywhere until the DIS.

We leave $1 per person per night. I have my grandson decorate the envelopes with stickers and drawings. Frequently we return to the room from a day at the parks and find towel animals doing crazy things or other cute arrangements of toys.

(We also tip housekeeping at other hotels)

Oops, I've never tipped housekeeping at hotels before. I guess it's just cultural differences. (But I'll know for next time!) :)

How do you know how many people are servicing your room every day?

I don't really understand the 'per person' part. It doesn't seem to me that the number of people increases the amount of work that much except making 2 beds instead of 1.

We don't use housekeeping every day so i just leave 5 on the days they come in.

We leave a 20 on the last day.

I've never had a bad experience with house cleaning but I do put my valuables in the room safe.

I too have grown up always tipping housekeepers (not just at Disney hotels, for we just started staying at Disney a few years ago!) But I agree it's definitely a cultural thing.
We just really appreciate the work that they do in our behalf, just as much as others in the service industry.

OP- I just think it's really sweet and cute of you to be so concerned about not wanting to offend when on your holiday! (Obviously you'll be just fine with whatever you choose to do since you seem like a very "aware" sort of person!) :)

I've always tipped housekeeping daily. If we are in a regular room, $1/per guest. If we're in a suite I usually will just throw down a $5. During the holidays I usually drop a $20 on the last day if housekeeping had done a good job during our stay.
