Besides Dramamine, which makes me VERY drowsy, what products are out there that really work and will prevent motion sickness and doesn't make you drowsy? The last time I took Less Drowsy Dramamine, and I was miserably drowsy, it ruined my whole day..I do not want to go through that again.

I would talk to a family doctor and ask what the patches that you put behind your ear are. I've heard those work well for many things like rides and cruises.

This is a great question. My husband gets very drowsy from the less drowsy stuff too. He tried the patch but gave him dry mouth. Haven't tried Bonine yet - any thoughts from anyone on how well it works and side effects. By the way, welcome to the boards!

I can get motion sick in my own bathtub, so sympathize with everyone here. I like Bonine best! It is meclizine, and works differently from Dramamine. It is very effective against motion sickness; I think it works better than the dramamine. Although the side effects are similar (drowsiness, dry mouth), they are far less severe than those of dramamine; I don't feel constantly dragged out or fall asleep the minute I stop moving. You only need to take one chewable pill a day for 24 hour protection (you can take two if you need to). I have used the motion sickness patch (scopalamine) but didn't like it. Although it's effective, I found myself accidently touching it. Twice I inadvertently transferred some of the medication to my eyes, resulting in totally dilated pupils in that eye- no picnic in the Florida sunshine! Yes, I had it properly applied behind my ear; I guess I touched it when moving my hair or something. ANyhow, in addition to blown pupils, I still experienced drowsiness and dry mouth. I think they are simply the effects of this type of medication. I can't recall how bad they were with the patch- I was so distracted by my disturbed vision (even with sunglasses) that it was about all I could pay attention to.

I take 2 bonine when I have to fly. When at Disney, I take one every morning. This helps me with busses or parking lot trams, the monorail, and most of the rides. With the bonine I can ride circle rides like Dumbo and the carrousel, which I could never ride without medication. I am good for ONE trip on BTMRR or TestTrack, but only one; guess you can only expect just so much from a little pink pill! I've never ridden on Mission:Space and won't dare try it, or the Astro Orbiter or Star Tours- not gonna push my luck. I still have to close my eyes during parts of Mickey's Philharmagic and Soarin', even with the bonine.

HTH :goodvibes

Ohhh, if it lasts 24hrs, then I could take it at bed time and it will last through the whole next day? I am going to go get some Bonine and try it out for a couple of days, if that doesn't work, I'll go to the Dr. Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

Less Drowsy Dramamine is the EXACT same product as Bonine. They are both Meclizine Hydrochloride . If the Less Drowsy Dramamine makes you sleepy than the Bonine will also.

I have motion sickness just like the poster above said-- I can't sit in a chair with wheels and not get sick. I LOVE Meclizine but it will make me sleepy if I am inactive. So if I take it before a car trip (even if I am driving) I will be very sleepy. If I take it at Disney where I am being constantly stimulated then I don't have a problem with sleepiness.

But I have found that taking it before bed does really help with the drowsy side effects. But it also doesn't really seem to last a full 24 hours and I find I really need to take another one around the late afternoon.

I do LOVE the patch and did have some dry mouth but I just carry water with me. I certainly prefer dry mouth to puking my guts up!;)

I have also tried the bands, peppermints, ginger and all the other non medicated remedies there are and none of them work for me for true motion sickness. They may help a little in just settling my stomach for a few minutes but if I am going to be in motion for more than about 5 minutes they are worthless. Just my experience--YMMV.

DOes the patch stay on when you are in the water?

Yes and no. It is supposed to and under normal conditions it should.

But I have long hair and I sweat quite a bit. Because if that I had problems with them falling off, with or without water involved. But, I got some waterproof medical tape and secured it on with that and didn't have any more problems. I went snorkeling and swimming with it and showered with it once or twice a day.
