Hi,
Over the last couple of years I have several people email me about the Motion Sickness patch. Here's my take on it:
I am a firm believer in the motion sickness patch. I suffer horribly from motion sickness. I can get car sick if my husband just brakes the car too hard or too many times, so I was really worried about our trip to Disney World. My brotherinlaw suggested the patch. I called my doctor and told him I was going to be travelling and needed the motion sickness patch. He called it into the pharmacy for me.
It's called the Transderm Scop. Scopolamine 1.5 mg transdermal therapeutic system and it is available by prescription only. This particular package contained 4 patches. You put it behind your ear and it stays on for 1-3 days. I put mine on about 12-14 hours before I needed it and left it on for about a day and a half. It stays on even while showering. I changed it more often than I probably needed to but I didn't want to take any chances.
I have to tell you that it worked wonders for me. I was able to ride everything without any sickness, nausea, headache or dizziness. (I felt a little weird on Body Wars, that was the exception.)
Ok, you wanted the drawbacks and the side effects. My major side effects were dry mouth and severe pupil dilation. This is the effect of the scopolamine and is one reason why it works. Your eyes are dilated very large. This makes it really hard to see small print. I couldn't really read the park maps very well and had to rely on my kids for the small font size. You might need sunglasses. The dry mouth was another side effect. I mean DRY. I felt like cotton mouth all the time and had to constantly drink water. But it was all well worth it to be able to enjoy all the rides and feel great the entire time.
The packages insert says that disorientation and dizziness may occur, but I think I would have been more so if I had ridden the rides without it.
The cost: My insurance covered this prescription. I paid only my co-pay of $10 for name brand. The cost on the package was about $50. That was for four patches. Hopefully, if you decide to go for it, your insurance will cover it. I have heard other people who use dramamine or sea bands or other products and have good luck. I have never had good results with other products. I have a sensitve stomach and always worry about stomach or intestinal changes that can occur from oral medications.
I am not sure if they come in larger quantities. I assume so. The four patches I have been prescribed have lasted the 7 days of all my trips.
Hope this answers some of your questions.
Cheryl
