Motion Sickness on FJ

I rode Forbidden Journey 3 times back in June, and never had any problems. I did have some dizziness from The Hulk rollercoaster and in the past on Body Wars (I think that's the name of the old ride that's now closed in EPCOT), but not one problem on FJ.

Also, The Simpson's was fine for me. I used to get a little dizzy when it was Back to The Future, but nothing with The Simpson's.

I hope you have a good trip!

Oh well.. looks like I'll miss most of this ride... just like I caught about 30 seconds of the Simpsons due to having to close my eyes most of the ride...

Simpsons, Hulk, or Dueling Dragons didn't bother my husband at all, so I'm not sure why FJ threw him for such a loop, but he has said there is no way he's getting back on it when we go back next May. On the other hand, I'll be there solo in Dec and can't wait to ride it over and over. I'll be taking Meclizine, just to be on the safe side though.

My husband and I are roller coaster junkies.....spinning, twisting and dropping doesn't give either one of us issues. Forbidden Journey on the other hand sends us both into states of nausea.

We're both fine if we close our eyes, but what's the fun in that. You miss the storyline of the ride. My theory is that it has something to do with depth perception on the ride's video screens. The other thought is that unlike moving roller coasters where you are cooled by the coaster's forward movement, FJ is a bit stuffy at times.

Our teenagers love the ride and continue to do it several times each trip, for both me and my husband---not a ride either one of us want or need to do again. What's the fun in feeling yucky even for a part of the rest of the day.

Now I'm even more convinced I will get sick on FJ! Well I still plan on trying it just maybe I'll wait till the end of the day just in case.

Interesting theory. I have craptastic depth perception! Maybe its the folks, like me, who's depth perception isn't 100% and that's what's making people sick. Or...maybe its the difference between people who can read in a car (like my dd) and those who feel sick (like moi).

Interesting!!

I'm a local so the first few times I rode it I went just to specifically ride that. I felt fine, didn't get sick at all.

A few weeks ago I went all day, hard core, with my cousin who is from out of town. When I got to FJ I was hungry, thirsty, had been riding rides all day, and was starting to get a little cranky. I got so sick!

Did the same thing two days in a row and thought I was going to hurl both times. I actually took the opportunity to look around the edge of the bench to inspect how the rides works, see the ride vehicle and whatnot, instead of looking at the screens. My cousin got a little sick too and she speculates it was from the gentle rocking sensation it has, whereas a lot of the roller coasters are more jerky.

Personally, I do best when I have food in my belly, and I'm well hydrated. After we rode it both days we went and ate, and I felt so much better after that.

This is SO me! I would be trying to distract myself big time.

When I was expecting my first, I some how ended up at the opening of the Museum of Civilization and it had a brand new Omnimax theatre. They were playing First Emperor of China. It has HUGE EPIC battle scenes and was a floor to ceiling screen.

There was NO escape. Even with my eyes closed I still felt really really BAD.
And it was pitch black and I had such bad vertigo I could only clutch the chair and wait for it to be over.

heh. That was 20 years ago. I shud just let it go, eh?

Me too!! People swear by not eating or drinking before a ride like that but if I'm hungry, forget it - cold sweats and very upset stomach! Would it be weird to bring in a barf bag just in case?:rotfl:

My husband does fine with rides like Spiderman, the Simpsons, Soarin, etc.. but when we rode FJ he said he almost puked while ON the ride. he didn't say anything until I ask why he looked so green.

Star Tours made me nauseous, but FJ didn't.

First time on FJ was fine. Later in the day, I rode it again after I had eaten and got so sick. I didn't feel right again for 2 whole days, so it might not have just been the ride. It could have been the flu. If I go again, I'll ride at the end of the day. I had the seat all the way to the left. I've never gotten sick on a ride before.

I get really bad motion sickness, but was totally OK on FJ:wizard:, didn't even think of taking any meds beforehand..on Simpsons I felt just a bit queasy. That went away quickly though.
When that ride was still BttF I never felt this:confused3

When my friend joined me the next day on FJ she also felt that small twinge in her tummy for the rest of the day cause of her vision:sick:

I would just try it with meds:scared1:

Enjoy your trip!

Anyone been on it with the SCOP patch to fight the motion sickness? I do great on coasters but not on Mission Space and cruise ships make me positively barfy without the patch. Just wondered if anyone has tried it for FJ? We will be there a week from tomorrow! Can't wait!!!:yay:

Have to say I never really get sick on any of the rides but the second time I rode FJ I don't know for what reason the motion sickness set in big time .
So riding two times was enough for me and did me in for riding anything for the rest of the day

I rode FJ 5 times over two days and while it didn't make me sick, later when I was at the hotel I felt like I had sea legs -- like I'd been on a boat for several hours. It was really strange and I wasn't sure if it was the heat, the Spiderman ride, FJ or what.

Add another two people to the sick list.

I am not surprised that I couldn't do it, all motion simulator rides except for Soaring make me ill. (Dramamine did not help me either.) I did OK till the spot where it puts you on your back and turns you at the same time. I had to close my eyes for the rest of the ride.

My husband can do Simpson's, Mummy and SpiderMan with no problems, but FJ made him queasy.

They need to add cool air blowing in your face, I think this would help some people.

PS-
As you are looking at the seats, I rode in the far left one. I don't know if that makes a difference but I think I remember reading somewhere that one side was slightly less nauseating than the other?

I have rode FJ 5 times and sometimes feel fine and other times it takes me 30 minutes or so to fully recover.

I have developed this theory - seats on the ends are a rougher ride than the seats in the middle. I think it could have to do with how to robotic arm attaches to the bench and physically the end seats are moving more than the seats in the middle.

My husband rides everything, but when we were there last week he sat in seat 4 (far right) and refused to ride again saying the ride made him feel very sick.

I would recommend sitting in the middle seats if you are prone to motion sickness.

Interesting theory. I sat on the end seat every time, as a party of 2, dd refuses the end. Likes to have a warm body on each side of her. LOL.

I don't think seat positions matters that much. My husband who has never gotten sick on any ride, rode in the second seat the first time, then because it was a tight fit asked for the modified seats the other two times he rode it. He sat in both the first and fourth seat the next two times. All three seats made him nauseated. For him it started as soon as the ride took off through the chimneys.:rotfl: Both days we rode, I gave him an Antivert (Meclizine) but it didn't do a thing for him. I've known him for over 30 years and have never known him to get sick on any ride. He loves coasters and simulators, but FJ did him in.:rotfl: I don't know who was more shocked me or him.:rotfl:

I had motion sickness as a kid (used to get sick on long car rides from CO to CA), but I'd surmise I grew out of it somewhat. I'm not a big fan of all simulators (I like Mission Space, but don't like The Simpsons -- too hot and dizzying). The thing I've learned while riding attractions like Spiderman, and as of late, FJ is that I need to stay aware of my surroundings, even during the simulation part (closing my eyes will only disorient me more), not eat right before riding, stay hydrated and ensure I'm not too warm in the queue or during the ride.

I've found that while riding Mission Space at Epcot, I'm comfortable because they utilize cool air on guests during the ride. That keeps me from feeling any nausea. FJ doesn't employ a/c directly on guests during the ride, but the temperature does feel comfortable.

If you do have motion sickness a great deal more than I do, you're doing right by utilizing medication to curb that feeling. However, if you're unsure (even with meds) that you're able to ride FJ without getting sick, I'd ask you to reconsider riding. If it's going to make you feel bad on an outing or trip, that's no good. Enjoy other attractions and events at the parks. ;)
