Motion Sickness, Anyone?

Just wondering if anyone has any secrets or tips for motion sickness... I get queasy on spinning rides (tea-cups style) and occasionally on jerky rides. At the Houston rodeo last year, I actually threw up when I got home from a spinning baloon ride I went on with my 4- and 5-year old daughters  I find this seems to just get worse and worse as I get older, so sometimes I'm never really sure how I'll react to a ride I haven't been on in a while until I ride it. But in my head I'm still 9 years old and I LOVE THE RIDES!

Any pearls of wisdom from any fellow "weak stomachers" on something for motion sickness that won't zonk me out?

My wife has same issue. She uses 'sea-bands'. They are a small elastic type bracelet with a 'button' that puts pressure on the under side of the wrist. Doesn't seem like it would work, but my wife swears by them.

I like you suffer from motion sickness. There are some things I cannot even watch and that includes teacups, dumbo etc. The one and oly time that I did any rides of this type was when I got a perscription for the behind the ear patch (I forget the name) Just make an appontment with your doc. FYI, I can ride Soarin', without the help of medication.

I have extreme motion sickness. I can ride everything in DL except the tea cups and Star Tours. Star Tours is the worst; I doubt anything would stop your sickness on that.

Is star tours the one where you're in a room that moves around, and it's like you're flying through space? I think we went on that at WDW - that was years ago  - I think nowadays it would kill me.

I might have to sit that one and the teacups out and let dh handle those. It's the ones I'm not expecting that worry me. Usually I'm fine as long as it's pretty straightforward motion. I just thought maybe I could take something for "insurance" purposes :) I'm also thinking of taking the girls by myself at Halloween, and there's no way they'll accept not riding the teacups then.

Thanks for the tips - I will check about the prescription patch and the sea bands - I don't want to puke at the happiest place on earth!

Dramamine for me. But then, it doesn't put me to sleep at all, and my mom will fall asleep right away...

I hear ya! Almost lost it on Star Tours last year!
I use scopolamine patches - small circle patch that goes behind your ear and the medication absorbs into your skin. Basically it sucks every ounce of excess moisture out of your system, including your inner ear, which regulates balance and motion. I find they really really work wonders, but beware - you will need to dring a TON of water, and sometimes I wonder if the terribly dry mouth isn't sometimes worse than the motion sickness! But I won't fly or boat without them. They also last for 3 days or so, so 1 patch can protect you for half of your trip if you're gone for a week.

there's also sea bands, ginger pills (gravol makes one now) and dramamine. Sea bands never worked for me, same for ginger, and the dramamine knocks me so flat on my butt I wouldn't even know we were at DL!

i get motion sickness too. one ride that really bothers me is the BEGINNING of space mountain when you are going up through the colorful, lighted, "spinning" tube. i just close my eyes on that part!

i take dramamine every morning and stay away from teacups!! :thumbsup2

They have a non-drowsy dramamine and it doesn't bother me. I personally hate those seabands. I had to wear them for a cruise because I was newly pregnant and my doctor did not advise using dramamine. I wore them for 1 week and still suffered plus then I had sore bruised wrists at the end of the week. I like to take the ginger pills but they won't really cure it, just help calm your stomach. I like to drink ginger ale on flights but recently found out it contains little or no ginger so it's affect for me must be psychological. :)

Such great tips, everyone - thank you. There is a small amusement park up here that opens next weekend, so I think I'm going to do a 'trial run' with all of these methods to see what works. At least that way if I'm green in the face, I'm close to home and not ruining anyone's vacation!

My son gets horribly sick and he also uses the scop patches and never has a problem. Big fun saver.

Meclazine, available at Vons nearby (not sold in Canada anymore) does work well, and is non-drowsy. It works for up to 12 hours. I do like the dramamine (gravol) but it can really make a person feel zonked out.

For me gravol always works, and meclazine it worked very well for all rides, but NOT for a Graylines Bus Tour!!

For those taking the ginger tablets, I think mythbusters proved it to be VERY good at preventing nausea. I don't like the taste in my mouth after I take them, though you feel like you're burping up ginger!

I have an easily upset tummy & I was a little worried so chose my rides carefully.
I didn't ride Mr Toad or Roger Rabbit because of reviews I had read. Star Tours was horrible for me, I wont ride that again. My oldest DD & were nervous about the Tea Cups but they're the Disneyland Tea Cups!! we had to ride them, so we sent DH & youngest DD off on their own cup so they could spin themselves silly & we rode without spinning the cup, we loved the Tea Cups & will ride them again :)

I get queezy too. I also take Bonine. I take one the night before and another one that morning, and it works great!!

No thank you, I already gave at the office. ;)
Actually....... most unfortunately TOT, as much as I love the ride, makes me very lightheaded, and feeling sick. So sad.... Maybe I should try something, so I won't feel that way, when planning on going on that ride. Maybe nothing will work for me, IDK.
