motion sickness and FJ?

One friend that went last summer, recommended scopolamine 1.5 mg (Transderm Scop).
Then he was fine.

I usually use meclizine (Bonine), but may go for the prescriptions patches for this trip.

One thing is certain: People should definitely not ride FJ after a meal or a Butterbeer. Apparently the ride has to be stopped quite often for cleanups as people do cast up their cookies inside too, not just at the exit... wouldn't want to be the custodian in charge of FJ! :sad2:

It's actually the ride's Team Leader, whomever it is at the time who has to clean it up. If the ride comes back and there's throw up on the vehicle or on the moving belt, it has to be stopped and cleaned. Then someone has to do a ride through of the attraction to make sure it didn't get on any of the screens or animation effects. So yes, it is a pain lol.

I eat all the time before riding, no problems here.:thumbsup2

Did your DW just "feel" sick (like being dizzy) or did she actually get sick (vomit). Did she say what made her sick, was it the simulator part, would it help to close your eyes during that part? Like Coach said he lasted 10 seconds, what happens in the first 10 seconds that makes you sick? tia

No vomit just dizzy, sweats and not feeling good at all. Coach and my wife both stayed outside and took pictures.:lmao:

Ewwww! I think I'd rather work in the pretty little shops then, thank you very much! :rotfl:

The OPs have mentioned medication that they take for motion sickness. What do you take and how effective is it? We are leaving in less than three weeks and I am nervous about the simulators. I get a little queasy on Star Tours.

I take Meclizine and can ride it over and over with no problem. My husband who never gets ill on any ride (can ride tea cups, orange side of Mission Space, Star Tours, Simpsons, etc without taking anything) rode it this past Oct and again in May. In Oct even with the Meclizine he got sicker than a dog. That morning I insisted he take the Meclizine and he gave me a hard time reminding me he'd never gotten sick on any amusement park ride in his life. I informed him that FJ wasn't like any ride he'd ever ridden in his life and he was taking it. Even with the Meclizine he felt ill right after the ride started (going through the chimmey's) and was green by the time he got off. He then felt off for the rest of the day. He was on meds for a sinus infection at the time and blamed it on them. The next day he skipped his sinus med and tried it again using Meclizine. Again he felt off for the rest of the day. In May he tried it again with the Meclizine and while it didn't make him sick, he still didn't like the way it made him feel and would only ride it once. However, the feeling didn't last long. He waited while me and a friend went through the FJ single rider line a couple more times, then went straight and rode Spider Man, Hulk, Mummy, Simpsons, etc with no problem. This is a man who has never had motion sickness in his life and is an amusement park ride junky. He has never had any ride ever bother him, but for some reason FJ throws him for a loop.

Didn't you use motion sickness medicine? so that didn't help at all :headache: I guess I'll try is once, I just hate feeling sick.

Rats! I've been lurking on this thread, to get whatever tips I can about reducing the motion sickness for myself and my sister, and was routing for you to enjoy your ride.

Oh well, I've got to try it at least once when we're there. Too big a Potter fan not to give it a go. Not looking forward to the  though...

(((Hugs))) I lasted 17 seconds :woohoo: :lmao:

But I have positional vertigo which I have been treating (and it seems better) so I am hopeful I will last 45 seconds this trip!!!

Darn!!

Did you use something.
I was recommended scopolamine

I WANTED to love the ride, but didn't. I took a Dramamine an hour before, and felt ill the whole time on the ride. I didn't feel that sick after (took about 20 minutes), but only because the Dramamine was working.

Some girl sitting next to me after the ride rocked herself for an hour after the ride (we were taking a break from the sun).

I saw alot of ppl getting sick.

It's worth it to do it at least once, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it again.

My DW takes Bonine motion sickness pills and she got ill. The secound time really got her.

Out of all the times my DS and I did FJ (maybe 15-25 times) 2 of the times they were cleaning puke off the steps after you get off.:scared1:

I'm taking my fiance to US/IOA for our 4 year anniversary and her birthday for 5 days. She loves Harry Potter and she's been dying to go. I'm very very excited as well especially for FJ, but after reading all these posts about motion sickness it has made me nervous for her. She gets very sick on the Simpsons, other simulators, and even the Mummy if she rides on it twice back to back.
Has anyone taken anything to prevent motion sickness and had success? I read on this post scopolamine, Dramamine, and Ginger pills. I want her to enjoy this ride as much as possible and don't want her trip to be ruined. Any help would help.

Thank you

Ok.. here it is...

I did NOT use any medication for my one and only ride on FJ.. I wanted to "try it out" to see how bad it really was...

After I closed my eyes I realized that no matter WHAT I was on.. there was no way I could ever get back on this ride again.... after the first 10 seconds.. I was in strict survival mode :rotfl2:

The skinny is this... If you get queasy on other rides (Simpsons, Star Tours, Spiderman, etc) I WOULD NOT attempt this ride... I know some of you are going to try it 'cause you "have to" like I did.. but I fear that even though you take medicine you will realize after the first few mins what a mistake you've made and then you will be in "survival mode" as well.

What is really upsetting is while you are holding on.. deep breathing, and just trying to survive, you will hear your friends and others cheering and screaming, as they really enjoy this ride...

I fear that as I am getting older.. my Motion Sickness worsens....

Bluer- it was great to meet you!!!! Despite your wife's experience on this ride, I hope you guys had a great time.. It seemed from your son's expressions that you were :)

We always have a good time. It was real nice meeting fellow Dis'ers.:thumbsup2

Did your house survive the floods?

DW wanted to try again just to see if she could handle it again. The second time was worse she says. The first she said she was alright with her eyes shut, but whats the point with riding that way.:goodvibes

Coach, I am so sorry you got sick on this ride

Ok, here is my story. We were in the parks Sun-Wed., so 4 days. Sun and Mon. went over to WWOHP and looked around, Tues did early entry(didn't want to ride in the morning and feel sick all day),so still did not ride FJ, came back Tues night (hoping crowds had died down) but we had just had a big dinner at Bubba Gumps (just thinking of this outcome made me sick) but DD and her BF rode it (30 min wait), no problems except DD's BF said the spiders were too much for him :rotfl: I was stalling everyday, I couldn't find the perfect time to give it a try.

Ok, my time was running out, now it was Wed evening (after dinner again,we ate early so we could try and ride) it was around 6:15. DS wanted me to ride first to see how it was (the wait was 45min) so I did single rider and was done in about 20min.

I took a Bonine at dinner. Kept my head pressed against the back of the seat, everything was going good, even kept looking when the simulator part started, then when it got a little wild, I would look at my hands, then back to the ride (when I could tell the simulator part was gone) I did this the entire ride, also taking deep breaths. I was tempted to close my eyes and did once, but it felt worse, so kept focussed on my hands.

I am glad I rode, this is an awesome ride if you can handle it. But, I really couldn't "enjoy" it, I know if I had looked at the screen the whole time (combined with all the jerking around of the ride) I would have gotten sick.
But I survived, no dizziness, no headache, no sickness. (but I did miss a lot of the ride, while staring at my hands:laughing:)I also, chewed a piece of ginger gum, when I got off the ride (don't know if that helped :confused3) I probably won't ride again, and I didn't let DS ride (he even got dizzy on the Mummy) So, to those who have not rode it yet, give it a try, and good luck!:thumbsup2

Hey guys,

Long time listener first time caller :)
Just wanted to give my two cents.
I have never had any motion sickness problems before and have ridden all types of rides and simulators. Forbidden journey was the only one that made me feel ill. It was quite a shame because I thoroughly enjoyed the que and the rest of the world. Something about those screens just didn't sit right with my body. I agree with previous posters when they say that you really do have to try it and see, as some people who get sick as a dog on most rides handled this fine. And other people, like myself, never get sick and 'wham'.
I had taken Dramamine that morning but it didn't seem to make a difference.
(or maybe it did, and if I hadn't taken it I would have been drenching fellow riders in my breakfast) Either way me and the hubby are flying back to the states next year and I will try it again,I am just curious to see if I was just having an off day or it's really not for me.... yes curiosity really did kill the cat.

I do get motion sick but did not want to miss this ride. had my husband go first in the child swap(he gets a bit motion sick also) and he said it was okay. I did it, closed my eyes a few times but made it through with only a bad headache that cleared up later. We did not ride again. I was a wonderfull ride and put anything a any other park to shame as far was I was concerned. Best ride I ahve ever been on even though I loved the mummy and it even made me scream and I never usually do that on thrill rides...

perfect description of me on a lot of rides people have said would be fine for me (like spiderman)...that they're 'nothing'.....yeah.....right...
like when people said EE is just a bigger thunder mountain....that might be true for regular people, but not for me...from the moment we started going backwards, i wasn't really in survival mode....i actually thought i was going to die....seriously.....that's how bad i felt....i thought my brain was just going to explode and me die....i didn't....but rest assured i'm not going back on EE and never going to get on FJ.....

EE and I don't get along either. I actually feel better on FJ than EE.

As soon as the ride started moving, I shut my eyes. I had them shut for the entire ride and I remember saying to myself ... don't puke, don't puke, don't puke. Well, I didn't get sick but I sure felt like I was going to ... all day. We left the park after FJ and went to the outlet mall :) We are going back in September and I'm wondering if there is a motion sickness pill I can take so I can actually enjoy this ride. I see that you took something and still got sick.

Did anyone else get motion sickness on this ride??? Holy moly...I couldn't go on it again, even though I really wanted to! I loved it, and there was no wait (thanks to early entry :thumbsup2), but by about the dementors area, I was really ready to get off...and I took some motion sickness pills too! I did ride it again a couple of days later, just in case I was having an off day, but no...I got motion sickness again! I was green for about an hour! I didn't expect it to be that bad :sad1:

on a side note....butterbeer is AMAZING! Loved it...frozen hands down, way better! :drinking1

I also feel sick after EE. It's that going backwards in the dark and your brain having no clue where your body is in space combined with all the jerking around... I love this ride though..I do. My husband has to literally hold me up when I get off the ride b/c I'm so dizzy. I'm a glutton for punishment!

We leave for Florida today...at WWoHP bright and early tomorrow morning for early entry...I MUST ride FJ. I am such a HP fan...slightly obsessed...if I miss this ride I will never forgive myself.

but I don't want to spend the day feeling sick as a dog either.

I know i'm going to ride it anyway. Fingers crossed I make it through without upchucking on anybody!!:thumbsup2

You should definitely be taking some type of anti-nausea medication tonight and tomorrow morning.

On it! already have the dramamine ready to go!

I didn't think about taking it tonight AND tomorrow though. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm really very nervous about this ride now that I've read this thread. I am a coaster person. The crazier the better. I've never had a problem EVER with motion sickness. Then BAM last summer I did a coaster simulator at Disney Quest and I was sick as a dog. Later that day I still felt queasy and was out of the blue nauseous and embarrassed myself to death right into the little water way near Aloha Isle. :headache: MORTIFIED.

Although I have no trouble with Soarin...though most people don't from what I understand.

I guess we'll see how it goes!!

I have a different question I am afraid of heights how will i do on fj ? I ride the mountains at magic kingdom but I wont ride rnr at hs. I dont like to see how high up i am on any ride. I dont even like dumbo. However i am okay on ee, but scared. Are you really high up? My son is so excited otherwise i wouldnt try it.

You never really see the ground while you are riding. Your robotic vehicle has your seat about 10 feet off the ground.

Just think of the robotic arm vehicles in Epcot's Sum of all Thrills.
