Motion Sensor Thermostats

We once stayed at a hotel in France where you could not even turn the lights on unless your room key card was in the holder on the wall.

I’m sure they use the excuse that they’re doing that to help the environment when they’re only doing it to help their budget. Like when Poland Spring started making their bottles with thinner plastic and calling them “green,” which they were, but only in the sense that green is the color of money.

That is the way many cruise ship staterooms are now. We bring an old room key and keep it in the slot so we don't forget our room key.

We just returned from the Yacht Club and I’m pretty sure that the cooling system was motion sensitive.

During the days it didn’t bother me so much, because our room cooled down quickly enough once we were inside and moving around. At night it was a different issue. Waking up at night due to the heat, then having to move around to cool the room down again should NOT be required at any resort, deluxe or value. Sleep is a precious quantity at Disney, where the days can be sooo exhausting. A box fan is not an acceptable work around in any room with a functioning A/C (unless you individually like a fan), especially at night when less energy is required to keep the room cool and at a more constant temp anyway.

I understand that the new thermostats are a benefit to the environment and the bottom line. But for the love of Pete, can’t they compromise and put the things on a schedule so people can get quality, uninterrupted sleep at night?

Our stay at the Contemporary 3 years ago was less comfortable than it should have been. The only time the A/C ran was when I got up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. I was up and around a lot because the room didn’t stay cool. I got into a routine of waking up sweating, taking a lap around the room in the dark to trigger the A/C then struggling to fall back to sleep. Paying the high price for deluxe should guarantee comfortable sleeping conditions.

We shall see how we do at the Poly next month.

I agree. Normally these type of systems done bother me. But how they have it set at the YC is crazy. You nearly have to get up and wave at the darn thermostat to get it to kick back on.

I normally have the fan on low all night to keep air flowing and just as a noise buffer. The system would reset and go back into auto. The temp was nearly imposable to keep consistent as well. That was the only thing we hated about the YC remodeled rooms.

Yes, we have stayed in one in California like that as well as Europe. It keeps you from leaving lights on while you are not there, but you have to watch out if you are trying to charge devices in outlets attached to the lamps!

If you’re losing sleep over this, I would call for maintenance. In my experience, unfortunately you will have to wait until they come and you need to see the actual maintenance worker do something. Other hotels I have been in have opened up the thermostat and disconnected the sensor. It’s actually easy but WDW has theirs locked ;)

It’s difficult to acclimate to these sensor systems since our system at home is a normal thermostat system. I understand saving money and protecting the environment. But us seniors used to being able to regulate temps during the night struggle with this.

Hope these proliferate. Conservation is important. Leaving the A/C on all the time in a room is wasteful. Humanity survived for thousands of years without any air conditioning at all.

ummmmmm. apples and oranges here.

of course, someone might point out the mortality rate before the advent of Air Conditioning vs. post-AC....

Currently laying in bed at BLT at 1:39 am grateful to the person who posted the hack of pressing the power and temp down button at the same time. Our AC wouldnt even turn on. NOT AT ALL. I absolutely expect functionality in an AC system at a deluxe resort. If I was camping, I would not. To call a hotel DELUXE and I have had absolutely nonfunctional AC two nights out of four is disgusting. Walked around - pushed all the buttons — bought a 20$ ballon and have a sick kid. Horrendously disappointing at the cost of my room that I am not able to sleep. I am now like an over exhausted cranky toddler as this happened two nights. Pretty much 100 degree days and 78 -80 degree rooms are not a good match. A family of 5 waking up all night long completely covered in sweat is horrible. Today our ac wouldn’t turn on al all until I found the hack. Just was completely unresponsive.

I have felt your pain. It is terrible. You have every right to vent. Make sure that the resort knows about it too. Good luck and sleep well tonight.

I had to find the hack for our stay at the GF. The room stayed cold after I did that. I had spoken to maintenance before finding it but he said there was nothing to be done to get the room cooler. Ten minutes later I found the trick!

We are at BLT in 24 days and from Maine so thank you for this update. We have called maintenance in the past to have the AC dropped to 65 (again, we are from Maine) so we totally understand your concerns. I hope it all works out for you. Sleep is incredibly important on a WDW vacation!

We have had several stays at POR and the motion sensors are in full effect there. However our last trip there was november and it was in the 50's at night so no AC needed. We just stayed at BWV earlier this month, temp was fine but I will say we are from the south so our room may have been in the 70s at night and we might not have noticed. Also that room has a ceiling fan. For folks coming from up north, they may want it cooler but I don't recall it being hot.
