I don't have a MIL or my mom alive anymore, but DH and I always gave a joint gift for Mother's Day(same for Father's Day). Sometimes we shopped together, sometimes I did it..didn't matter to me.
I loved his Mom and he adored mine. I never even thought about him having to get a gift for his family whether it be birthday, Christmas or Mother's/Father's Day on his own..once we got married they were my family too, and vice versa.
No in-law type my family/your family, no my responsibility/your responsibility..just family.
I know, I know, we're very lucky, I have heard about some doozies of inlaws!
