My son is getting married and I am trying to find a nice song for the Mother/Son dance. I've given him a few ideas and he doesn't like any of them. He doesn't want anything "mushy" and I want something with meaning. He jokingly asked me "why can't we dance to an Aerosmith song?" I think he's worried he would get too sentimental and doesn't want to admit it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Those on the list now are:

Wish - by Rascall Flatts (his choice)
The Man You have Become (my choice)
My Son (my choice)

I was at a wedding once where the mother and son danced to "Sunshine on My Shoulders" by John Denver, and it was very sweet. Not sure your son would go for such an "oldie" though!

I've never heard any of the songs on your list, OP, but if i may suggest a couple: "A Song For Mama" by Boyz II Men and "The Perfect Fan" by Backstreet Boys. There wouldn't be a dry eye in the house...I tear up just recalling the lyrics now, lol, I'm such a softie.

A Song For Mama

You taught me everything
And everything youve given me
I always keep it inside
Youre the driving force in my life, yeah
There isnt anything
Or anyone I can be
And it just wouldnt feel right
If I didnt have you by my side
You were there for me to love and care for me
When skies were grey
Whenever I was down
You were always there to comfort me
And no one else can be what you have been to me
Youll always be you always will be the girl
In my life for all times

Chorus:
Mama, mama you know I love you
Oh you know I love you
Mama, mama youre the queen of my heart
Your love is like
Tears from the stars
Mama, I just want you to know
Lovin you is like food to my soul
Youre always down for me
Have always been around for me even when I was bad
You showed me right from my wrong
Yes you did
And you took up for me
When everyone was downin me
You always did understand
You gave me strength to go on
There was so many times
Looking back when I was so afraid
And then you come to me
And say to me I can face anything
And no one else can do
What you have done for me
Youll always be
You will always be the girl in my life

The Perfect Fan

It takes a lot to know what is love
It's not the big things, but the little things
That can mean enough
A lot of prayers to get me through
And there is never a day that passes by
I don't think of you
You were always there for me
Pushing me and guiding me
Always to succeed

Chorus:
You showed me
When I was young just how to grow
You showed me
Everything that I should know
You showed me
Just how to walk without your hands
'Cause mom you always were
The perfect fan

God has been so good (ohh)
Blessing me with a family
Who did all they could (ohhh)
And I've had many years of grace
And it flatters me when I see the smile on your face
I wanna thank you for what you've done
In hopes I can give back to you
And be the perfect son

Chrous:
You showed me
When I was young just how to grow
You showed me
Everything that I should know
You showed me
Just how to walk without your hands
'Cause mom yo always were
The perfect fan

Bridge:
You showed me how to love (you showed me how to love)
You showed me how to care (showed me how to care)
And you showed me that you would
Always be there (always be there)
I wanna thank you for that time
And I'm proud to say you're mine

Chrous:
You showed me (you showed me)
When I was young just how to grow
You showed me
Everything that I should know
You showed me
Just how to walk without your hands
'Cause mom you always were
The perfect fan

'Cause mom you always were
Mom you always were
mom you always were
You know you always were
'Cause mom you always were
The perfect fan

I love you mom!

Lee ann Womak - I Hope You Dance

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door
closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that youll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....i hope you dance.

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin might mean takin chances but theyre worth takin,
Lovin might be a mistake but its worth makin,
Dont let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to sellin out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....i hope you dance.
I hope you dance....i hope you dance.
(time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along,
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone.)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that youll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

Dance....i hope you dance.
I hope you dance....i hope you dance.
I hope you dance....i hope you dance..
(time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone

What a Wonderful World--Louis Armstrong

Have I told you lately that I love you--Rod Stewart

All those years ago--George Harrison

Song for Mama--Boyz to Men

This one is by far my favorite. In My Life - The Beatles

These may work too.
I'll Stand By You - Pretenders
You Are The Sunshine Of My Life - Stevie Wonder

Congratulations! :)

I actually did dance with my son to an Aerosmith song. It was my wedding, and he was a groomsmen, so it wasn't the traditional mother/son dance. But it was meaningful for us, because it had been he and I alone for so long.

We danced to "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing". He really wanted to dance to Ozzie "Dreamer", so I thought the Aerosmith ballad was a good compromise. And as far as songs go, it's one of my favorites.

I hope you dance by LeAnn Womack

One of my favorites song is Angel by Aerosmith. You might be able to find a slower version of that song.

This is the only Aerosmith song that comes to mind for this occasion. Have a look at the lyrics. It sure is a beautiful song. I'm partial to Aerosmith but I think this is more appropriate for the Bride and Groom. What Aerosmith song does your son have in mind?

I don't wanna miss a thing.

I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
Far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Well, every moment spent with you
Is a moment I treasure

I don't wanna close my eyes
I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing

Lying close to you
Feeling your heart beating
And I'm wondering what you're dreaming
Wondering if it's me you're seeing
Then I kiss your eyes and thank God we're together
And I just wanna stay with you
In this moment forever, forever and ever

I don't wanna close my eyes
I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing

I don't wanna miss one smile
I don't wanna miss one kiss
Well, I just wanna be with you
Right here with you, just like this
I just wanna hold you close
Feel your heart so close to mine
And stay here in this moment
For all the rest of time

Don't wanna close my eyes
Don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
'Cause I'd still miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing

I don't wanna close my eyes
I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing

Don't wanna close my eyes
Don't wanna fall asleep, yeah
I don't wanna miss a thing

SIMPLE MAN - LYNYRD SKYNYRD, another suggestion.

My brother used "Baby Mine" from Dumbo--but the version sung by Allison Krause I believe. Beautiful--a bit mushy--but I say bud up with your future dil to get it played.

I love "wish" by Rascal Flats also love "wonderful world" by Louis Armstrong.

We danced to You'll Be in My Heart by Phil Collins from the Lion King

My was voting for Back Where you Belong by 38 special because he got married when he got back from Iraq, but I was vetoed!

I really wanted to dance The Man You've Become with my son but knew that I would be crying my eyes out the entire song. Just reading the words brought tears to my eyes. Looking back I should have gone with my gut and not cared if I cried or not. We danced to You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban. It was a suggestion from a friend. I like a lot of the suggestions made and wished I would have posted the same question when I was trying to decide.

How about "Simple Man" - original or lots of remakes to choose from. I like Shinedown's version.
