I would really like to take my son somewhere in August for his birthday. He will be 9 years old. We currently live in NC and I'm looking to fly or drive 4 hours to get to our destination. We have been to WDW several times and our last trip was in Dec. and this past June. My son would like to go to Disneyland but personally I'm sick of Disney right now. We have have $600 in flight credit combined that we can use to fly United. I just need some affordable ideas and of course somewhere that is safe (since it's just the two of us). Ideally, I would like this to be a less than 6 days...3 days is minimum. Thanks!

I was thinking of going to Myrtle Beach since it's a 3.5 hour drive from us or going on a cruise. I really would like other areas that are family friendly.

Its farther than 4 hours to drive, but Mammoth Cave would be a hit at that age and very affordable.

I don't know if you and your son like National Parks, but United has a hub in Denver. I'd fly there, stay one night in Denver to get used to the altitude, rent a car, and stay a few nights in Estes Park and spend days at Rocky Mountain National park -- great family friendly hikes, wonderful ranger programs, kids love the junior ranger program, and one day drive all the way up to the top of Trail Ridge Road and back down stopping at all of the scenic outlooks. Estes park has other kid friendly things too.// For renting a car we saved beaucoup dollars by doing it at the Renaissance hotel with Enterprise rather than at the airport -- just $200 for the week for a compact car for our August week. // I just love getting out of the heat and being in the mountain in the summer.

Totally agree!! A week's pass to RMNP is $20 PER CAR. It's such a wonderful vacation spot for kids. Climb the rocks/creek at Alluvial Fan, drive to Fort Collins (through Big Thompson Canyone) for a whitewater raft trip on the Cache Le Poudre. And for a great, safe place to stay consider the YMCA of the Rockies. They are geared towards families with lots of activities, free mini golf, evening programs, and much more.
