I did not care what my MIL wore- but she kept trying to make me care!! She doesn't have a lot of fashion sense, and kept saying that she didn't want to a matronly dress. I did help her look through some catalogs, and she had one she really liked, so I told her to order it. Then, the day of the wedding, she was wearing this boring, matronly, lavender/grey dress that she hated.
My mom actually wore a black dress- it was strapless and had rhinestones scattered across the dress. It was beautiful- it looked like a 1950s prom dress. I loved it and Mom loved it, and that is all that is important.
If you like the dress, keep it. It sounds like it is a beautiful color, and you aren't going to be standing up with the bridesmaids, so it doesn't really matter what you wear as long as you like it. But, I also didn't really care too much about most things about my wedding- I wanted a wedding dress and my family there, and that's all that was important to me.
Have fun at the wedding.
