Mother/Daughter Cruise to Tortola, May 23rd, Lots of pics! COMPLETE 7/14

When we got back to the ship we decided to head up to deck 9 to get some ice cream from the soft-serve station next to Goofy's Galley. We passed the spa so I snapped a quick picture.

We also ran into Daisy walking around on deck so had to get a picture with her too.

Ice Cream in hand we made our way back to our room.

I took a brief little power nap and then we were off to the atrium for character pictures. I had the perfect system worked out for character photos. They all come out in 15 minutes increments so what I did was show up 10-15 minutes before the first one was due out. That pretty much guaranteed that I would be the first in line. As soon as I got that picture I would move over to where the next character would be, again I would be first in line since everybody else was still in line for the first character. I would keep doing that till I had seen all the characters. By the time the last character came out I may be a couple people back in line but overall it is a smooth seamless process and it allows me to see all the characters with a minimal wait.

So first up was Pirate Mickey

Then Goofy

Chip and Dale

There was a mother/son team who pretty much had the same strategy that I did, they always arrived a couples minutes after me. She joked that if she saw me she knew she was in the right place. We were line buddies pretty much the whole trip which came in handy because we had to help each other out a couple times.

Mom and I had decided to skip dinner in the dining room that night. We wanted to get a good spot for the pirate party and we knew that with our two hour long dinners there was no way that would be happening as we wouldn't even get out of dinner until after the party had already started. We dropped by the dining room to let our servers know not to expect us.

We hung out in our room for a bit, relaxing after our long and active day.

We eventually went up to deck 10 and found a table along the railings looking over the Goofy Pool, just like we had done at the sailaway party. We got dinner from Pluto's Dog House. I had chicken strips and fries which were delicious! DCL still has chicken strips unlike WDW that just has those tiny little nuggets. Mom opted for tacos. We sat up on deck 10 at our table watching as we sailed away from Tortola, enjoying the view. We had brought books with us so we could sit back and relax and just enjoy the night air.

I did ditch Mom for a little while so that I could go get my picture with Minnie. Mom had no interest and just wanted to stay up on deck. So I went on down to Preludes (outside the Walt Disney Theatre) as that is where Minnie was scheduled to come out. Stitch was still there for pictures so I jumped in line for him too.

Now this is where making friends with the people in line helps. There was no character handler there just a Shutters photographer. Of course I didn't have my Mom there to take my picture and the Shutters photographer looked like I was crazy asking him to also take a picture with my camera (normally I would have asked the character handler but they were MIA). The nice lady I had been chatting with in line said she would take my picture and then I did the same for her and her family.

We did the same thing when Minnie came out.

I was very surprised at the attitude that the Shutters photographer had. I guess that is the result of them not being Disney employees but a contracted service. When at WDW the photopass photographers are always asking me if I want them to take a picture with my camera as well. Now perhaps it was just this one photographer who had the tude and the rest are perfectly nice. I don't know as I never again asked one to take my picture I just always asked my line buddy to do it or a character handler if Mom was not with me.

I have to say that the rude photographer was the only non-magical moment that I had on the cruise.

After getting my character pictures I went back up and rejoined Mom. It was dark out now and we could see other cruise ships out in the distance.

A family from Kansas joined us at our table for the party, they asked if they could pull up some chairs next to us and we sat there and chatted with each other until the party started.

Mom and I "splurged" and each ordered a Pina CoLava in the special glowing pirates cups. Yummy!

I was surprised at how small the crowd was when the party started, there was barely anybody there! As the party went on though many more showed up. The first part of the party involves cast members out on deck leading the crowd in some dancing. They are then joined by Minnie, Goofy and Chip and Dale who then lead the crowd in some dancing. Chip and Dale went out into the crowd to dance which I thought was neat.

Eventually Captain Hook shows up and takes over the party. Never fear, Mickey arrives to save the party! This is the part that everybody was waiting for, the fireworks at sea! Now of course this is nothing even close to what you see in the parks but it was still a lot of fun, especially knowing that Disney is the only cruise line that has fireworks at sea.

We recorded the whole party but instead of posting all the video here is a clip from the end when Mickey arrives and the fireworks start.

Pirate Party

We headed down to deck 9 as the party was winding down to check out the pirate buffet they had laid out. Well it turns out that they opened the buffet early and it was swamped! We didn't even try and get in line for anything. Instead I just snapped a few pics over some shoulders.

We were completely tuckered out after that, we had had a long day after all!

Waiting for us in our room we found a towel monkey! He stayed with us the rest of the vacation.

Before going to bed I downed some Nyquil gelcaps hoping that they would help me sleep well that night and also help me recover from my cold.

Coming up: St Thomas and our excursion to Trunk Bay!

Thanks for the fireworks! It was great to be back there! Loving your report, Leigh

Thanks! I wish the quality of the video was better but I was using the older camera to record and then loading it onto YouTube did something to it, oh well, it still looks nice in my original video on the hard drive.

I cant wait to see your St. Thomas pictures. We were there 15 years ago for our honeymoon!!!! Some day we will make it back!
popcorn::popcorn::

I have the same exact WDW bag that your mom has!! My friend (that is going on the cruise with me) got it for me when she went to WDW last year.

I loved St Thomas! I would love to take a land vacation there someday. It is a great island by itself but it also has so many easy options to transport you for the day to other close by islands. :thumbsup2

I had set the wake-up call for 6am this morning, however when it went off I was still feeling really tired and well just plain icky so I went back to sleep until 7am. Mom was awake so I knew that she would wake me up in plenty of time to get ready for our excursion.

Since Mom was awake she got to watch as we sailed into St. Thomas from the comfort of our verandah.

I woke up and got dressed for the day and made sure that we had everything we would need packed in our beach bag. All set we went on up to Topsiders for breakfast and then went down to the Buena Vista Theatre to meet with our excursion group.

There were three excursions meeting in the theatre, all going to St John. They led us all out to the boat which was docked right next to the Magic. We were very lucky this day as we were the only cruise ship in port! That is so rare for St Thomas from I understand. Definitely a blessing as it would mean less of a crowd at Trunk Bay. :woohoo:

Now as the boat was pulling away a CM from the ship came running up yelling for the boat to wait. When we had all checked in for our excursion earlier there were 5 people missing. Well I guess they were trying to hold the boat for these people who were running late. This really annoyed me! If they couldn't bother to show up on time for their scheduled excursion why should the rest of us lose precious excursion time sitting around waiting for them, the excursion is short enough as it is.

The boat waited for five minutes but these late-comers didn't show up so we left without them, good riddance!

The new Marriott timeshares

Hurricane Cove

This is where they all store their boats when a hurricane hits. There is a barrier that protects them from really strong waves and apparently the plants surrounding the area are very hardy and help protect them as well.

Ritz-Carlton

The trip to St John took about 30 minutes and the guide gave us some history and facts about the islands along the way.

For instance he told us there is absolutely no industry on St Thomas, it is wholly devoted to the tourist trade. As a result they depend on St Croix to supply them with everything they need. He said rum is cheaper to buy than milk. Apparently milks sells for $8 a gallon on St Thomas!

Once our boat docked in St John they had the three excursions get off one at a time. Once one group was off the boat and loaded onto the proper truck then they called the next group. Our Trunk Bay excursion was the last to get off. The whole thing was very orderly, very different than the excursion on Tortola where you sort of had to figure it all out on your own.

Also they told you that the truck you rode to Trunk Bay on was the same one that you had to take back to the boat as that was how they would perform their head count to make sure that nobody got left behind.

The drive was very beautiful, our guide had told us that something like 70% of St John is a National Park and thus is preserved for our enjoyment. Rockefeller who was the one who owned the island initially left it to the government upon his death specifying that it be used as a National Park.

Our driver stopped at an overlook so we could get some pictures of Trunk Bay. It was so amazing, even more beautiful than any of the pictures I had seen. It looked like paradise!

I think the ride over to Trunk Bay from the boat dock took about 20 minutes. It was a lovely drive, very scenic.

The set-up here was very different from Tortola and The Baths. Big clean change-rooms and bathrooms and lockers. While the The Baths themselves were breathtaking I had been less than thrilled with the facilities there.

The bar/food stand

Snorkel equipment was included in our excursion price so the park staff gave us instruction on the equipment and also told us the strictly enforced rules, common sense really. Things like don't step on the coral, don't pick anything up, watch out for the sea urchins, how to use the flotation vest.

We had brought our own snorkel gear so the only thing we needed to grab from the staff was the flotation vest.

I had never been snorkeling before so one of the park staff gave me and another girl a brief demonstration. I already basically knew what to do but I am a worrier and was a bit nervous about trying something new so I wanted that extra reassurance that I knew what I was doing.

Mom was going to go out snorkeling first but she came back quickly. In the weeks before the trip she had been having problems with her shoulder and when she started to swim she was in a lot of pain. She decided to come back as she did not want to get out there and then not be able to swim back due to her frozen shoulder.

So I headed out on my own, and wouldn't you know it, snorkeling was super easy! Don't know what I was nervous about! :lmao: I ran into my character line buddy and her little boy. She was trying to teach him how to snorkel but he was too afraid.

I had one of those waterproof disposable cameras with me so I attempted to take some pictures. I never got them developed though as I had a hard time aiming the camera and figured the pictures probably did not turn out. Oh how I wish I had bought that underwater digital camera I wanted before the trip. It would have been so easy to get good pictures if I had the LCD display screen to use instead of trying to use the teeny tiny viewfinder with my mask on. :rotfl:

I really loved snorkeling, there were so many colourful and beautiful fish. I also saw lots of coral and sea urchins and such. The snorkeling at Trunk Bay is great! The fish would even swim really close to you.

Having swam through the whole trail I returned to Mom, she took my picture in the water before I got out.

I felt like I had been out snorkeling for a long time so I was a bit nervous about how much time we had left. Turns out I wasn't out there as long as I thought, we still had over an hour left till we had to leave. Since we had so much time left I decided to go back out to the snorkel trail again.

Having done the snorkel trail twice I returned to the beach to dry off, relax and take some pictures.

I could have spent all day out there on that beach. It was so beautiful and calm, absolute paradise! I totally understand how this can be ranked as one of the top beaches in the world. We were so blessed that there were no other cruise ships in port as the beach was not busy at all. I have heard that when there are others in port that Trunk Bay can become very busy.

Sadly we heard our tour guide give the 20 minute warning so we packed up our stuff and left the beach. Mom went to go change and I wandered around taking pictures. I was nice and dry so I just decided to slip my clothes on over my suit instead of changing.

Once Mom was finished changing we wandered up to the parking area. We were the first ones up there and all the taxi drivers were hanging out at a picnic table. Our drivers were there in addition to some other taxi drivers who inquired if we needed a ride somewhere. We declined saying we were with the tour. We found our truck and climbed on in.

Where our resort was (Sapphire Beach) we were able to walk down to a boat that took us to St. Johns for a day as well. So glad we did that!!! Beautiful islands...someday we shall return.

Less than 4 months until we cruise!!!!! I can't wait!!!!!!

How long are you actually "allowed off the ship" Did you have time to shop in the port at all?

I really really want to see Trunk Bay!:thumbsup2 You are helping me so much with trip planning! I can't thank you enough!:worship:

Our excursion had us back at the Magic between 12:30-1pm. The All Ashore time that day was 4:30 so there was sometime to wander. Mom and I didn't go far though, just stuck to the immediate shopping area. There were tons of taxis driving around offering us rides should you choose to go further into the island.

I really really want to see Trunk Bay!:thumbsup2 You are helping me so much with trip planning! I can't thank you enough!:worship:

Trunk Bay is as amazing as everybody says, simply beautiful! Definitely visit if you can. :thumbsup2

I'm glad my report is helping with your planning, that is always one of my goals when writing a report. :goodvibes

I have two photobucket accounts so I uploaded the St Thomas ones into the second account until my usual account is back to normal. That is what I get for writing two trip reports at once!
