Most overrated school subject?

I mean, what do you mean by "overrated"? Not interested? Not useful as a subject?

Personally, I find gym overrated. Health, sure. But let kids play on their own time. At least once you hit middle school.

In our local school district - Spanish. Our students are required to take 12 years of Spanish. Going into HS, DD knew barely any. They would go over colors, numbers, shapes, the basics I learned in Spanish 1 20+ years ago. That is as far as it got until HS. Then, Spanish 1 is reviewing everything they learned the previous 8 years (so basically exactly what my class was). She's in Spanish 2 now and they actually have a Spanish speaking teacher (brand new to the district), and she will only speak Spanish in class. None of the kids can understand a word she says. Actual conversational Spanish is completely different than what students are taught. I took 3 years of Spanish in HS, but I learned more working weekends in a restaurant.

My school was going through a progressive phase when I was in jr. high, and actively discouraging those stereotypes. I was randomly put in woodshop, and ended up really enjoying it!

My junior high was the same. Everyone, both boys and girls took "Industrial Arts" for a least one quarter for both 7th and 8th grades, and all had to take "Domestic Arts" (home ec). You could take another quarter of it if desired.

I completely agree with this. Why do kids "have" to learn how to play football, basketball, soccer, baseball, etc? It seems silly. My kids are not team sports kids...They like to bike and swim...solitary sports. PE is torture for them both. One is actively scared of contact sports and is forced to play them in PE. I find that abusive, personally.

They were all over rated to me , but if I got to do it all over again, I would try

In sort of the same vein, I wish they would teach kids a "life skills math" class in school. Many times I have seen teens who've had the more complex math classes in school still struggle to figure out how to make change, or to calculate tips or "percentage off" discounts.

We went to one our dd’s meet the teacher night last week and she has been placed in “ discreet math.” I thought what in the H is that?:rotfl:The teacher went on to tell us this is the class for kids who really don’t do well in math( algebra, trig, etc...) Come to find out this was practical math. They learn about taxes, 401K, financing, budgeting, etc... I was thrilled that this was something she can use! When she goes to college she WILL NOT be a math major but now she can balance her check book!

I also hated the science fair in middle school. You had to come up with an invention. I hated it. I'm not an inventor. My idea was dumb, and somebody else had the same idea. It was a complete waste of time. I would understand if it were voluntary, but it wasn't.

Our high school had different levels for each core subject. 00 was the base level, 01 was ‘easier’ and something else was honours (the fact that I don’t remember what it was should tip you off that I never had one class at that level LOL). I took 01 for grade 12 math and it was how to balance a chequebook, how to figure your mill rate, how to do your taxes..I’m so glad I took it.

I wish our school would have offered this option - did NOT do well in math!

Math. I hate math, I'm no good at it, and I haven't needed to use anything beyond 5th grade math (except to try to help my teenage son with his math homework). I hate math so much that I changed my major in college to avoid it, and at my previous job, where I had to report statistics to the state, I saved up all my stats for one day per month and then was an absolutely miserable witch at work all day that day while plugging all those numbers into spreadsheets and generating reports. All I had to say was, "I'm doing reports", and I was magically left alone, no one wanted to talk to me!

My home ec teacher was actually one of my moms professors in university. I don’t know if it’s still a thing but my moms university degree is for..wait for it..home economics. I was born ready to cook and sew LOL

up until 1984 brigham young university still offered a home ec degree-i knew a large number of lds kids who referred to it as 'majoring in marriage'. the university supposedly abolished the program but they really re branded/renamed it under a few newer majors ('family and consumer sciences', 'family life'...) but it's still essentially the same program (classes include-marriage preparation, meal preparation, family finance, sewing, interior design...).

i don't know if it's still the case but back when i knew females that went into the program they considered it more of a graduation to marry OUT of the program vs. actually complete it and receive a degree::yes::::yes::
