I'm planning way ahead for my next trip. We will be there for my daughter's 12th birthday. I need a place that will really go over board. She will hate me for it, but it will be worth it.
I was thinking whispering canyon.
Any others?

I was also going to suggest Whispering Canyon till I saw you already had it in mind. %0's Prime Time is also an option.

For birthdays, anniversies, and other celebrations,
no restaurant/resort is that much better than another.

1) Acknowledgment is a matter of the CM's personal initiative.
. . . depends upon how much they like you as a guest
. . . depends if they feel like doing anything special today
. . . depends upon the phase of the moon
2) CM's can do a lot, or they can do nothing at all.
. . . they are under no obligation to give goodies or even acknowledge, or
. . . they can go way overboard and give lots of gifts to a guest
3) The CM's have a lot of leeway of things to do or not do for you.
4) Have your anniversary-birthday-celebration noted on the ressie and ADR's.
5) Some of the things a CM can do for free are
. . . decorate table with Mickey confetti
. . . best table location
. . . special personalized menu
. . . character-autographed birthday cards
. . . balloons
. . . wine or champagne or Shirley Temples
. . . appetizers or desserts
. . . cakes
. . . cupcake with candle (almost always available for the asking)
. . . placemats autographed by characters
. . . free appy pr free dessert
. . . room full of balloons and/or flowers
. . . fruit basket or wine basket in hotel room
7) Caveat: If there are multiple celebrations for people during a trip
. . . do not do separate celebration locations or tables
. . . one person may get an enthusiastic CM, and get lots of goodies
. . . one person may get a lazy CM and get nothing

We had a great CM at Garden Grill who shouted out to the entire restaurant that since it was my son's birthday (he was 10), everybody's meal was on him...next year. My son thought it was hilarious, but I could see where someone could be embarrassed at being called attention to...

50s Primetime Cafe, although I was fortunate to have a waitress who took mercy on me for my birthday. I begged her to keep it quiet and she delivered a little cupcake/cake thing at the end quietly but cheerfully with a little candle.

Now, if you want the waiter/waitress to really do it up, I'm sure they would :).

Will she enjoy it or not? If she won't really enjoy being the center of attention I think it may be cruel to embarrass her. My 12-year old DD would NOT like to be embarrassed at a restaurant on her birthday and I would not want give her a negative lasting birthday memory for my own jollies.

My grandson turned 10 while at WDW. He wore it proudly. For 4 days. Then he took it off and threw it away. He was really tired of all the free cake and people stopping him for congratulations. Never again, he sez.

Knowing my daughter, she will be pissed at first then just blow it off and enjoy it. She has done it to me, and I do it back. I will just let her know it was a payback. And all will be right in the (disney) world. She has a great sense of humor and sarcastic. Thank you for your concern tho.

Rusty, I get what you are saying. I'm just looking for the best opportunity.

So 50's prime and WCC. I will need to think about this for a while.

We've celebrated DS birthday at various restaurants over the past years as we have gone during his birhtday month. As Rusty said, it's really depends on what the CM decides to do..also how busy it may be and how many others are celebrating.

Chef Mickeys does a generic birthday song during meal service for all celebrating birthdays...everyone twirls their napkins and sings along and your waiter brings a cupcake to your table.

If you go to a character meal sometimes the wiater will bring the cupcake over when a character is at your table (or it just mayu be a coincidence at times) so you get the character interaction with the Birthday singing..but it's never a guarantee.

Actually the folks at Norway did a nice job for DS...they sang happy birthday in Norweigen and made a big deal of it. That's one that sticks out in my mind.

Again, I found the less busy a restaurant was, the more likely a bigger deal will be made over a birthday as the CMs are not rushing as much or have as many tables to take care of.

At Tutto Italia for my 28th birthday, I nearly jumped out of my seat when my very cute male server  popped up behind me with a lit candle on top of a tiramisu, and he and five of his coworkers sang to me in Italian. It was VERY over the top and I turned about nineteen shades of red before it was finished. I can only imagine a 12 year old would blush even more deeply!

I'd have to say that I agree with some of the other posters and either WCC or 50's Prime Time would be the best. I also agree that you might want to table some of the enthusiasm if your child is not one that would take to being embarrassed very well.

How about Chrystal Palace? Our dd celebrated her 13th birthday at WDW! Every ADR I made we made sure it was known and all the tables were decorated nicely and one place did give her a cupcake! For the life of me I can't remember which one! :confused3 Anyway, my dd isn't the type to have a big fuss made over her either and none of it embarrassed her, she enjoyed CM's and even other WDW guests saying Happy Birthday to her all day!

Why not both? Any reason to limit the celebration to one dinner? We have 2 birthdays and an anniversary in the same week so we celebrate them at different meals throughout our trip. There is also a cake chatter thread if you are interested in ordering a special cake for her.

When DS turned 14, we celebrated his bday at Chef Mickey. He acted like he didn't want any acknowledgement, but he was grinning ear to ear when Goofy walked over for a picture of him to pose when our waitress lit the candle on his cupcake :goodvibes

I ate at Columbia Harbor House for my birthday (13th) and the person in front saw my button (I was also wearing a birthday sash) and rang his bell and yelled to the entire restaurant that it was my birthday. He made a little speech about it, and then had everyone sing happy birthday. It was slightly embarrassing, but such a great memory... I loved it! :goodvibes :cool1:

Last year when we were at 50's Prime Time we saw a hilarious birthday scene...

There was a kid at the table next to us having a bday. He was probably 14/15. As he was eating his dinner, the waiter kept coming by (in the 50's Prime Time way, lol) and telling him to eat his green beans. The waiter was making a big loud scene about it, telling the kid he would be sorry. When it was time to clear the plates, the waiter said, "Are you SURE you don't want to eat those green beans, birthday boy?" and the kid said no. So 10 minutes later, the waiter comes in with some other waitstaff singing Happy Birthday to the kid. And lo and behold, those green beans were on top of the birthday cake. OMG, we laughed so hard. The kid ended up laughing about it too, he thought it was funny and took it like a good sport. The waiter brought him another piece of cake afterward. ;)

When I was at Whispering Canyon Cafe there was a girl celebrating her 12th birthday. The waitress had all the boys in the restaurant age 10 to 14 circle around the table and they all had to sing happy birthday to her. She was so embarrassed. But even funnier was when they were done singing she told them to line up to give the girl a birthday kiss. The look on her face was priceless and all the boys of course ran away back to their tables. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen.

When my wife stupidly wore her "it's my birthday" badge to the sci fi drive-in, the waiters gathered around and the one with the loudest voice in the world yelled "It's Karen's birthday today. Stand up Karen! Show everyone how proud you are to be born today. " and after she reluctantly stood up, he yelled "Let's all sing!" and the entire room burst into "Happy Birthday". She was bright red with embarrassement.

How about 1900 Park Fare for dinner and a dance with Prince Charming? (however that dance isn't guaranteed)
