Most annoying vocabulary blunders

My grammer is horrible, so if I annoy anyone - I apologize.
I went to catholic school for 12 years.
They have to have one bad apple and that's me! :teeth:

irregardless - the use of this makes me crazy.
What I find funny is that "irregardless" is ALWAYS mentioned in threads like these. It's been mentioned at least 4 times already and I've never--not once--ever heard anyone say it or type it. Except in these threads. :rotfl2:

I agree with preggers--hate it! To me it sounds like what teenage girls would use to talk about their friend who is pregnant.

My biggest pet peeve is when my DH says "pacific" for specific.
IT MAKES ME NUTS!!!!

Help me someone!!

Do an advanced search on the word and you can find many instances of its use :rotfl:

I could care less. what if they are typing when they have been drinking?? I can't fault them for that :confused3

Is this a joke?

My opinion (and please remember that we are all entitled to our opinions) is that threads like these are belittling and have the potential to cause hurt feelings. The last time I gave my opinion on this matter I was told "not to get my panties in a bunch" so I took them off. I am now going "commando".

:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

I do notice spelling and grammar mistakes, but you know, I make enough of my own. To point out other's mistakes is just plain rude. That being said, do people with more than a 4th grade education actually think that pacific and supposively are proper??? I think they know they aren't and think it's cute. The only real blunder that grates on me is ATM machine. ATM stands for Automated Teller Machine. If you call it an ATM machine you are really saying Automated Teller Machine Machine.

I reserve the right to run screaming when people overuse words such as like, ummm and you know. My favorite is when they drop the F word at least once per sentance. That shows real class

I hate the "you're/your" mix-up.

It also makes me cringe when I see something like, "I rented four video's last night."

I notice that I type "and" when I really mean "an." Such as, "I sent him and invitation."

I don't get irritated when I see spelling/grammar mistakes, but like another poster said, it is distracting. I will tend to remember the mistake in their post rather than the content.

However, there is one grammatical error that is made a lot that does irritate me a little tiny bit...the use of the term "nauseous". There is a difference between nauseous, nauseated, and nausea. When used incorrectly, it can be irritating to me.

I know my grammar and spelling very well, but will sometimes type something wrong unintentionally. My biggest thing seems to be typing "know" instead of "now". :confused3 I have no idea why I do that, but I do. I correct my posts if I notice I made an error, but I am sure I have tons of them out there that aren't perfect.

That being said, it doesn't bother me when other people do it either, we all make mistakes. I wouldn't be surprised if I made one in this post. :rotfl:

I do the same kind of thing and I don't know why, so I try to be kind to others. I know the correct word to use, but sometimes use the totally wrong word. It's actually pretty funny sometimes. :rotfl2:

And other times I will type a close variation, when I know the correct word to use.

I guess that's the difference--I do usually know the right word to use, but do make mistakes and will not point out the mistakes of others unless they are being nasty to me about something or unless I am joking (and I've had others tease me and I am fine with that).

We all have things that we are good at and we all have our challenges.

Typos are a whole other issue.

As far as our own personal pet peeves--yes, I have them. I don't like the term preggers. I can't stand prolly. But I don't mind ressie. I'm sure that I have some pet peeves that others don't mind using and there are others that I use that are pet peeves to some people. I overlook what I can and hope that other people do the same and if not, so be it, they are the ones raising their blood pressure over something so stupid.

I can take typos and the occasional mistake. But what bothers me is when someone uses the wrong word altogether. I have a friend who is she is wanting to say "I have an idea" says "I have an ideal" instead. The first few times I didn't say anything about it. But then I realized it wasn't just a simple mistake. She really thought she was using the word ideal properly. I told her idea was the correct word to use not ideal. She looked at my like my head was about to spin off my neck. She thought I was wrong. She said it again using both ideal and idea. Shook her head and said nope....ideal. Come to find out that her whole family (adult children included) misuse the word ideal for idea. Drives me up the wall. And when she sends emails or IMs, she makes the same mistake. UGH!

I know I'll probably get flamed....but does anyone else get annoyed by posts with blatantly bad vocabulary? :stir:

I don't mean those cases where someone typed too fast and forgot a letter or two from a word. It is those where the poster clearly means one word but uses another with a totally different meaning.

The one that bugs me the most is the use of "loose" instead of "lose".
i.e., "It would be a shame to loose the Adventurer's Club...."

My faith in the educational system has been fading for some time now.

Any other examples that bug you?

"Enuf" instead of "enough" j/k

There are plenty of mistakes that annoy me because I am an English teacher (high school level). At least once a week I go through a mini lesson about their, there and they're or to, two and too, or your and you're. I learned those in fifth grade. No matter how many times I've done this, I still see mistakes. As a previous poster mentioned, the "internet" talk is out of control- "b4" "b/c" "u" etc. are not appropriate in a paper.

However, your statement about fading faith in the educational system is ludicrous. Our educational system is impacted by government, society and families' decisions and cannot be expected to shield all the criticism alone.

Teachers are more highly qualified than ever before. More programs exist to help economically or mentally or behaviorally disadvantaged students than ever before. Teachers attend more in-service programs and more professional development and education programs than ever before. The educational system is better than ever before, yet, students are failing and students are making simple mistakes.

It is time that we looked at what other factors could be contributing to this rather than pinning it on those who are trying their best to ameliorate the problems. With all of these improvements, students may end up making mistakes that a student in a one room schoolhouse with nothing more than a chalkboard and a textbook might not have even made.

I have my thoughts as to why this occurs- larger numbers of students who do not speak English, emotionally disturbed students, abused students, pregnant students, students on drugs, etc. make learning difficult no matter how great the lesson or how great the teacher. Our society is not as strong, our family units are not as strong. It logically follows that our children are not as strong. I will am doing my best to change this, but it is a big problem and many things need to change before we see an improvement.

I get more irritated by people who underdefine (is that a word?) vocabulary words than use them incorrectly. I'm forever getting scolded for saying something by people who only use the first meaning in the dictionary and end up having to explain to people that the word can have multiple meanings.

Not to pick on you, saucymb, but I use "I feel nauseous" without apology because, at least in my dictionary, another meaning for nauseous is nauseated.

I understand how the mixups occur though - my brother always says "Isn't that curious?" which just sounds wrong to me. However, I can't deny that one of the dictionary meanings of curious is "odd", so his usage probably works - whether it sounds wrong to me or not.

There was a big sign on a store downtown - "Snowblowers are hear!" After about two months, it was finally corrected. LOL.

Usually, what other people say doesn't bug me, but there are exceptions. :teeth:

I do get irritated by "could care less".

Oh, and for things that are not blunders but are just irritating. I HATE it when people respond to a post with, "Wow. Just...wow." I hate that!! I have seen that quite a few times now and I don't know why but it drives me nuts. LOL.

Spoken and written (so it can't be spelling, only): weary instead of wary..................

As in: I'm weary of going to a nail salon since they've found those problems with infections.

Flustrated instead of frustrated.

and the general overuse of "things such as that", "you know what I'm saying" or just "you know", and "irregardless" as mentioned earlier.

There are two more I hear all the time, especially by those interviewed on the news, but just can't remember right now................

Most of the ones I can't stand have already been mentioned.Prolly is a big one instead of probably.

I have always been a great speller but I have been having some health problems lately and I am noticing that I make too many mistakes when typing on the computer. I have spoken with the Dr about it and I had a CT scan esterday and I go to a neurologist next week. My two fears with this is that either I have had a stroke or I am showing the beginning signs of Alzheimers and it is scary. I try to go back and fine all my errors but sometimes I don't have time or don't notice them at first.

At work my assistant manager writes loafs of bread instead of loaves and tomato and potato she always adds an e to the end. It drives me wacko and I always go back and try to change it back to what it is supposed to be.

Now...punctuation....THAT is my downfall!!! I have always been terrible at when to add commas, etc.

I teach dyslexics and have a dyslexic child. I'm used to things being spelled in unusual ways. I'm used to homophones being used incorrectly. Some people have great difficulity with language. Some people just make honest mistakes.

This board is for entertainment. If someone feels the need to point out mistakes, they are taking themselves way too seriously, IMO.

I do notice the errors and I don't let it bother me. I'm glad people are posting.
