Hey all, are there any mosquitos in California, more importantly, Disneyland?? We live in a mosquito infested area and are going crazy here, Just wondering if I have to prepare my family for MORE of the blood-sucking little critters!!:sad2: Thanks!

mosquitos? no I don't remember having to put insect repellent on but sure did use the sunscreen alot though!!

Relatively uncommon along the west coast, unless you get up into the mountains. Or next to a swamp, lol!

I wouldn't worry about them at the parks. My blood is apparently like Dom Perignon to mosquitos (I lived in Florida for 10 years and have scars from gnarly bites to prove it!) but I don't have problems with them now that I live in SoCal.

Mickey Mouse doesn't allow mosquitos! Besides, they are all in my back yard!

Well, California is a big state and there are mosquitos here. Where I live it isn't much of a problem, but up by inlaws' house near Sacaramento, it is a bigger problem.

As far a DLR, I never bring any kind of repellant with me. Never even think of it. Now that I've said that, last summer we were surprised one evening to see them "attacking" at the Pacifc Warf area of DCA. That was the only time I've ever seen them at DLR. They don't really bother with me so I still wouldn't wear repellant, but you MIGHT see some.

We live in Northern Canada, capital of the mosquito world. Like your family, we have to learn to run, jump, and wave our arms at an early age. (Infants learn this dance.) They have lessons in school here on how to deal with them. We buy bug spray by the gallons. We spend countless hours counting our mosquito bites, and sharing tales of 'I lived to tell when I was bit..... (a zillion times)....' Sometimes we roast skeeters on a stick for a snack. We make skeeter smorgs, too. You can hear a child screaming for miles around when they have been bit by the thirsty mosquito bloodsuckers.

:lmao:;)

So for us, Disneyland to us feels like we are literally indoors; I never see any insects, hardly EVER!!! :goodvibes If I see anything it is the occasional bee on a flower, I never EVER see mosquitos, so ***enjoy*** this interesting and magnificent new turf!

Neighbor! We do the mosquito dance a LOT here. :rotfl2:

No bugs.....but I am sure you can catch lots of bugs from the park. Leave the repellant at home and bring lots of hand sanitizer etc. as I remember the last time I was there and realizing how disgusting some of the rides and line corals were as they are sticky and gross. I am sure they try to keep up with cleaning everything but they were definitely falling behind last time I was there.

Fun fact :
The oldest known mosquito with an anatomy similar to modern species was found in 79-million-year-old Canadian amber from the Cretaceous.

+1 million. The laser guns on Buzz ride are to infinity and beyond disgusting!!! We sanitize hands after every ride. Not kidding.

This mosquito subject comes up periodically on the DIS. As PinkBudgie said, this is a big state (with all different types of terrain, landscapes, bodies of water and environments), so, yes, there are mosquitos. But it won't be the infestation you are used to, Disneylovers2000.

And being a lifelong SoCal resident who neither lives near water nor in the mountains (or any of the expected places)...I have been chomped to bits by the little critters at times. I have seen them simply flying around near patches of grass. They just go wherever it looks inviting.

But this does not happen to everyone or in every area. I always say that if the mosquitos want to find you they will find you. If they don't want to find you, they won't.

In Disneyland, while I think I have been bitten once or twice on distant past Summer DLR trips, it was rare. I've never been bitten on a late Fall/Winter DLR trip.

It's not impossible to encounter a mosquito here or there at DLR because there are bodies of water and that can attract mosquitos, but Disneyland does a very good job of keeping bugs at bay in general, or keeping them out of the general public's view, in any case. I think it has to do with the fact that they keep the grounds so impeccably groomed, swept and cleaned most of the time.

There are bees at DLR. There are spiders. There are even giant roaches at DLR (everyone see deejdigsdis' latest Trip Report - and be careful if you eat at Rancho del Zocalo!:scared1:). Most of the critters stay hidden or safely at a distance. So there may be an occasional mosquito here and there too, but they probably won't find you and they will probably not be the enormous, scary kind that you will see in other states/countries!

Yipes!! Cockroaches - we definately don't have those up here!!:scared:

Thank you for all of your responses!:worship: We truly appreciate it! And are ecstatic that we don't have to bring the bug spray we have been bathing in for the last month or so!!:upsidedow Is there a cockroach spray!!!:lmao::rotfl2:

:rotfl2::rotfl2:For some reason, even in the nicest areas of Southern California (I don't know about Northern California), there are big, honkin' roaches that scurry around outside, especially during the summer. Sometimes, on occasion, they can end up inside your house or office - I have seen it happen in many places, even the cleanest, most spotless places. Even when you wouldn't expect to see them, there they are.

But, again, Disneyland is a place that is pretty immaculate despite the thousands of people who visit every day, and they do a great job of cleaning and keeping things orderly. So insect sightings are not that frequent.

Still...every so often...those critters that hide in the planters at DLR decide to come out to say hello. I saw a big roach crawling on a guy's shirt once when he was waiting in a line next to some foliage. Ick.

And just recently, one of our DIS'ers, deejdigsdis, had a most unfortunate encounter with a giant roach (complete with antennae and everything) that appeared ON her table, between two trays, at Rancho del Zocalo. Personally, I freak out if I see those things on the sidewalk outside. I nearly faint if I see that one has gotten indoors. But I would have to run screaming into the night if I saw it on my table at DLR, crawling between trays. Yikes!:scared1:

We sat on our balcony at the GCH one night and were eaten alive! Other than that, I've never even thought about them.

Is this a roach thread now that we've established the lack of mosquitoes at DL? Because if you want to see a hoard of roaches at DL, peek down into the below-ground planters around the trees between DL and DCA at dusk. That shook me out of my happy place for a minute!

:faint: That makes me sick to think of it, I have an actual phobia of insects. Blech.

Nothing's gonna' stop me from going back to Disneyland though.

But seriously, blech. We saw a shiny (metallic) green shelled large beetle when walking to DLR on Harbor Blvd, and a snail in the hedges along that walk way. Haven't seen any roaches - yet. But obviously they are there. (Shudders.)

:scared1:Yikes! I'm glad you warned me - so I know not to look in those planters! I think the giant bug that deejdigsdis saw trotting across the table at Rancho del Zocalo must have been a rebel that strayed from the pack/group hiding in a nearby planter or bush. I'm sure there were more where that one came from, but the rest of them probably knew to stay away from people.

We in the fair city of Atlanta call those babies "waterbugs". So much more genteel than a cockroach - but I don't care what you call them - they're disgusting! My cat has decided they are great play toys and when we allow him on the porch in the evenings, he'll try to bring one into "play with". Totally creeps me out - and why we have a vacuum with a really really long hose!

And we have it all - waterbugs, spiders, gnats, mosquitoes, snakes, rats... it's a regular infestation! Just remember - don't leave food out where you're sitting. Keep everything on your tray (don't sit it on the table), and carry a few ziploc bags for any leftovers you may want to stick in your bag. I always bring a few with me to Disney so that if I have a little something leftover, I can seal it up - keeps it dry and bug free!

But I wouldn't worry too much - my DD is a huge bug-a-phobe and has never seen one in all of our visits. She's too busy having fun!
