Hello All-

After hearing the recent news and CDC warnings regarding the Zika virus, I am curious how prevalent mosquitoes are in the City of San Juan itself. We will be staying in Condado before departing on our
Southern Caribbean cruise.

How bad are the mosquitoes on the rest of the islands on the itinerary?

Thank you!

We just came back from the 1/10 southern cruis and found it wasn't buggy at all....we would apply sunscreen and then spray with deep woods off...no bites in any location

We just returned from the 1/10 Sailing as well. I'm fair so i apply and then reapply sunscreen throughout the day but Never put on bug spray. I got a few bites but nothing out of the ordinary. I live in Florida so I'm use to it. We arrived in San Juan the morning before to spend the day touring the fort. No problems with bug there. If you are concerned then bring the bug spray.

Martinique is a confirmed island that has Zika, but it can also be Chinkungunya or Dengue as all of them are carried by the same mosquito.

It's the tropics, it's always warm, and there's water everywhere. Put on the bug spray.

P.S. - I even put on bug spray in the summer here in GA (every once in a while there's West Nile).

Yep... kind of unnerving when they send out a specific email warning us about it for our upcoming Southern, but I've got the Off.

We used deep woods off and didn't have any bites...just make sure whatever you use has deep in it

I know I buy all kinds trying to find the best one here in southern New Jersey and I get bit a lot.

We were on the Jan 10 cruise. Never saw a bug in San Juan or any of the islands. But I rarely use bug spray because I never seem to get bug bites. They don't like me. But they love my husband and he didn't get any either. That doesn't mean you shouldn't use bug spray...just depends on the individual.

We are still in San Juan, waiting for our plane. In Granada, we took the river tubing excursion. Imagine our surprise when we were told not to put on sun screes or mosquitos repellent because somehow the river was connected to the water supply!!! Now, we did not see any mosquitos but had I known about the restrictions we would not have booked the excursion!

Just got back from the 1/24 Southern Caribbean. No bugs near the terminal in PR. I wore picaridin bug spray (DEET is sticky, smelly, and every time I wear it I end up puking) while in Grenada, saw some bugs but none of them bothered me.

I'd be far more worried about dengue or chikungunya than zika. Unless you're pregnant or planning to be pregnant, getting zika is better than getting the flu.

We were in the 1/17 sailing out of San Juan. I got a few bites in Grenada (went on the rainforest waterfall hike) but not the other islands (mostly because we were on water based excursions).

However, on our return to San Juan after the cruise we toured old San Juan. I did get a lot of mosquito bites here. About 10-15 on my legs. Another girl on our walking food tour got a lot too. This was before Zika was widely publicized (or at least before I was aware of it) and I wasn't wearing any bug spray.
