mosquito advice

I am not big on the smell of mosquito repellant (maybe I am part mosquito, I don't know) has anyone had success with any of the other methods, ie bands, electric gizmos etc....


or better yet:

What can of mosquito repeller do you use most and like the best?

avon Skin so Soft bath oil pour in in the bath tub and also use the skin so soft repellant and sun screen, no deet which makes it safe.. also you can by cintrennalla candles and plants and that keeps them away.

We use off here and there are alot of mosquitos.

The citronella candles or coils work good, or you can also plant the mosquito plant-sorry can't think of the name right now, but if you get the dried up brown leaves, you can burn them and they will chase the mosquitos away.

If you take Brewers Yeast for a week I guarantee that you will not have any problems with mosquitos!

My DM purchased the small keyring things and my DS took all 5 to camp with him...he was eaten alive! They don't work!

Our neighborhood backs up to the Great Dismal Swamp (great name, huh!) so the mosquitos are completely out of control.

The only repellent we found that works was one I could only find in the hunting department at Wal-Mart. Can't remember the name, but the can is camouflage and it advertises an almost unreal percentage of DEET--somthing like 40% DEET? If you're one of those folks that worries about chemicals, it's not for you with that high concentration, but it's the only thing that lets us go outside in the summer!! We put it on us, and then on the kids where they can't put it in their mouths (spray it on their backs, shoes, socks, shorts, etc.) I also spray the area where we're playing....sandbox, swingset, or whatever....not sure if it helps, but hoping it does.

We did try some of those outdoor area sprays but didn't really notice a difference.

We have a creek across the street from our house that beavers have dammed up. The city is in the process of fixing the problem. Last summer DD could not go outside, mosquitos LOVE her. We purchased a "Mosquito Trap" I believe is the name, it runs on propane and covers 3/4 acre. It helped alot, well, as much as it could considering our problem across the street. If I remember correctly, the propane lets off carbon dioxide just like we do (somehow - I don't know??), and it attracts the mosquito, they go inside & die. A big spider made its' home in ours last summer - boy that was one fat spider, the mosquitos flew in and were trapped and the spider would eat them. Ugh, sounds kinda sad & gross when you think about it. Anyway, these machines aren't cheap, $300-600.00, but with all the diseases out there, it was worth it for us - and no odor. It does take about a month to start noticing a reduction in mosquitos. We have put ours up for the winter, but will probably set it back up w/in the next few weeks, I've already started seeing mosquitos and we have 4-5" snow on our deck right now.

Avon has a new repellent...it's call Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Expedition. It's unscented, has vitamin E, and repels mosquitoes, and deer ticks for 8 hrs. The thing that I like the best...it sprays on.

For kids, I'd recommend Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Cool 'n Fabulous. It comes in two formulas, both are lotions and both have SPF 30. The "fun one" goes on blue (but it's a disappearing color...so don't worry, your children don't look like Smurfs all day .

I've tried the Skin so Soft, but it didn't work for me. Cutter seemed to work better, but I hate using it.

You can also plant the Citronella plant in the yard. It looks like an herbal geranium. Marigolds seemed to keep some mosquitos away from the garden too.

I think this is what KristiKelly was talking about. We have many friends who have one and all are extremely satisfied. Their website also has testimonials from celebrities and "regular folk" about how well they work. It is an investment but well worth it if you like to spend time outside.
