Anyone else ever mess around with making a mosaic? This one was done with AndreaMosaic which is a free (or for donation) download. I made it up from a library of all my disney picture files. It takes a while for the computer to sort it all out but the final product is a huge and detailed file. I just thought I would share as I find it kind of interesting.

Click the Image for a Larger Size (No where near 'full' size)

Here is a crop to give you an idea of the detail.

That's really cool, Jeff!:woohoo:

Do you have to map out the final image, or do you submit a picture for the program to recreate with the files? How long did it take? How many individual (i.e., different/distinct) pictures did you use?

Someone was asking about this not too long ago on these boards; great find, great job!!! Thanks for sharing!:thumbsup2

Thanks Jen,

First you direct the program to a library of photo files and it goes thru the process of shrinking them to thumbnail or so size. In this case I used all the jpg files in my Disney folder. Not sure how many but probably a several hundred files.

Then you pick a picture for the map of sorts- in this case the castle obviously.

Then you set the program variables- like how many times can it duplicate each file within the mosaic, is it allowed to reorient, rotate, reverse, etc the pictures to better suite the final image, how large & detailed you want the final image, etc.

Then go have dinner while the computer does its thing. I think that one took about 45 minutes to compile.

that is very cool!

So can you save the final image? Obviously you can if you have it posted here. That would make for a neat desktop background.

i really like that idea..are there any limitations ie printing or anything. i am making gdaughter a book of our zoo trips and i'd love something like that as a cover. guess i should just be less lazy and check out the site instead of asking 20 ???;)

Thanks Gdad, I downloaded it, and will mess with it..... I'll post something when I have something decent :)

you can do s imiliar thing with Photoshopp too. you just ahve to do it yourself instead of having it done for you.

I tried it a while back with a photo of my kids in front of the castle and in my experience it really works best if you leave people out of the picture you want to make a mosaic of. You could tell there were supposed to be three kids, but you really couldn't tell who was who, not enough detail.

Has anyone had any success doing one with people in it.

I haven't yet, but this one seams pretty good

I agree- there is not enough detail to do people unless it was a close-up of a face or something. I did a few of my daughter a while back with the images from her little camera though.

No limitations I can see- you end up with a jpg file. It can be a HUGE file depending on the program settings.

I tried it (with AndreaMosiac) but wasn't in love with the results. I think you need really high resolution in order to get a satisfactory result. It also helps to have a wide variety of source images.

I did one that was 5000x6825 using 50-pixel-wide photos, using all ~2,500 of my pictures from our last WDW trip, and it still didn't turn out very well.

I'm sure it can, but I think mosiacs really work best when you make them in a really huge resolution and print them at a large size, say 24x36.
