Morning run/walks & breakfast? Splenda headaches?

Today I decided to stop drinking coffee in the mornings - I think either the caffeine or the Splenda is giving me headaches come late morning into early afternoon??? Regardless, I'm wondering what I should be drinking/eating for my morning run/walk...

I had been only walking and I could tolerate breakfast before, but now that I'm starting to run I've noticed I can't really eat beforehand.

I read in one of DH's magazines he gets that for morning runs I should drink a sports drink about 20 minutes before, then eat breakfast when I get back in. We have a case of Powerade and I was looking at the calories and it is 150 for that one bottle! Well, I'm trying to lose five pounds that wouldn't seem to come off and I've been trying to watch my calories so that freaked me out a tad.

Think I can get by with just water or will I need more energy as I increase my running and do less walking?

Thanks for any tips or opinions!

There is really no answer to that question except to experiment and see what works for you.

I eat a big bowl of cereal, like Special K or Cherrio's with a banana and skim milk. A big glass water, a coffee and a vitaimin pill. An hour later I'm ready for whatever.

Erica likes a half of a PPJ and a coffee before heading out.

Try out different things but usually an hour or so is required after solid food before any intensity. Sorry I couldn't be any more help.

I think it probably depends on how long you're out for. I think anything longer than like 45 minutes, you really should have something before. When I used to have morning swim workouts, I usually had part of a power bar or a granola bar about 30 minutes before, and then regular breakfast after.

But like Dave said, it will take a lot of trial and error before you can tell for sure.

Unfortunately, it really seems to be about trial and error. Everyone was suggesting bannanas or peanut butter to me, but that gives me awful heartburn. I also can't have too much dairy, I am ok with an ounce or 2 of cheese, but no more than that, I also find I have to watch how much fiber I eat, I ate a granola bar with 9 grams of fiber, an hour before a 7 mile run, and it felt like a rock in my stomach the entire time.
What seems to work best for me is an apple and a string cheese for shorter runs, or a grill cheese sandwich on wheat bread with an apple or orange. My sister has also suggested Power Bar Triple Threat Bars before longer runs.
Just hang in there, and keep trying different things, you will definitely find something that will work for you!

Thanks for the posts. This morning I skipped the coffee and breakfast and drank one of the Powerades instead while getting the kids ready for school. After I dropped them off I went out. It seemed to work fine for the four miles I did. I came home and ate a bowl of cereal and drank some water. Hopefully no headaches today. I really think it was the coffee or Splenda.
