As long as it's a non EE day, I would say arriving at 7:15 will get you right up front at the gates, and you will be some of the first in the park. If you want to be VERY first in a line, I'd shoot for 7 am.
I would suggest arriving at least 30 minutes before the park opens. If you get there early they allow guests to roam around Main St. and then they block off the end of Main St. until the park officially opens. They have a cool little ceremony a few minutes before they let everyone scatter throughout the park!
It's cool that they allow you to roam Main St. for a bit. It gives guests a chance to shop and even grab some coffee or little snacks from Blue Ribbon Bakery. It's also less crowded in the mornings which is my fav. time to go!

I think it's roped off and then they do the opening ceremony and let everyone through. It looks crowded because everyone is on Main St. but once everyone scatters the park is pretty quiet.
We've only experienced rope drop when the park opens at 10am. For an 8am opening on a non-ee day, we try to line up at the gates by 7:30. Even at 30 minutes before opening were often the 15 or more person in our line. We haven't yet tried to be there an hour before opening, but I'd assume you'd be one of thefirst in line if not the 1st.
Yes, they open the gates 30 min. early but I believe only when park opening is after 9am so if the park opens at 8am I don't believe they open early. But during this half hour you can wander through mainstreet and there are usually characters there as well so it's a good opportunity to get a couple autographs and pictures before the park opens. The end of MS is roped off and then at acutal park opening time they drop the rope and allow you into the park.
For 8AM somtimes they keep everyone at the gates until 8AM, and sometimes they start letting people thru onto Main Street before 8AM just to get the gate lines cut down. And a rope drop does occur in this case at the far end of Main Street.
