Hi,
I've read several posts about split plate charge at BB.
My questions are:
1. Are there any other restaurants that require split plate charge?
2. IF we are to order 1 side order, 1 soup, 1 entre and 1 dessert for 2 of us would that count as a split plate? I don't mind the charge but I don't like them splitting the food for us (yes, I am rather odd that way). I prefer to split the food ourselves.
3. IF I was to order a soup and an appet, and DH an entree, would that count as a split also?

I'm just trying to understand what is considered a split plate... :)

TIA!

I don't know if I'm too much help here but:

1. Not sure if anyplace else charges for a split entree

2. I'm not sure that you can order just a side separately or not so not sure if that would work. But when you order it as a split entree you automatically get a full side with each entree and you each get the choice of soup or salad so it's kinda nice that at least for the extra charge you get more than just 1 entree split in half.

3. You shouldn't be charged the split charge if you order a soup and app and dh orders the entree. I think part of the reason for the split entree is like I said above, that you both get a full side and a salad/soup so if you don't specifically ask for the split plate, you shouldn't get charged for it.

They no longer give each person a full side and salad and soup. they literally split the meal in half.

I have been to storytellers and cafe orleans and they charge the fee as well.

My wife and I did what you are talking about at cafe orleans and we were not charged a split plate fee. she ordered the garlic fries and i ordered the monte cristo and we shared it from the same plate.

I dont know that I can help with any of your questions, but wanted to say that the reports I have been reading lately say that a split plate at BB no longer comes with 1 full side and salad each, you infact now split 1 side and salad between the two of you.

Now for your original question I think it all depends on if you ask for an extra plate (wheather it comes out empty or with half the food on it). But that is just a quess

Well, that's no fun!!

Yea, it is!

My wife is vegetarian but really dislikes the mushroom dish. so we were going to order it split, but then i was going to give her my salad as well so she'd essentially have a meal and not a side salad. So we were a little shocked that they no longer gave 2 full portions?

Audra, so far you're the only person on the dis reporting this, and only one person on mouseplanet has really had it verified by one person at BB. AKV over there is trying to contact someone in charge, not just *random lead at the time*, to really find out what the deal is, because many people have gotten the "proper" split plate, even well into July. :confused3

weird!! I wonder if it makes any difference that both times I went it was lunch? Do they have it set up different for dinner? I thought maybe it would be same, but maybe not?

On one of our trips last year, either the August or October trip, DH and I were denied one full side per person for the split plate. I wanted the salad and DH wanted the gumbo, and he said that we couldn't do that, we had to get the same thing and they would put half of the chosen side on two plates (or in two bowls). When I mentioned to the waiter that I was sure the split plate fee covered that, he said that some servers were confused about that and doing a side for each person erroneously.

So again, I think it just depends on the server you get.

Oh for the love of pete... :headache:
Why couldn't they just give you an extra plate?
Seriously, why does it have to be so confusing?

We know already that they'll be charging us the split plate, they don't also have to split the plate if we don't want to... sheesh...

Plus it's more romantic... like lady and the tramp.... :flower3: :rotfl: hehehe...

So here's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to order what we want and not even mentioned splitting the order (not because I'm avoiding the charge but because I don't want them halfing our plates). Then if they want to charge me the split plate they can. How complicated... :headache:

I was at Blue Bayou 3 weeks ago and we ordered the pork chop and asked to split it. I knew I wanted the wedge salad and asked DH what kind of dressing he would want on his salad because I knew we would each get one due to being charged for the split plate (thanks dis'ers!). We were, at that time, informed very clearly by our server that the split plate NO LONGER INCLUDES an extra soup or salad. That it used to, but it doesn't anymore. And he sorta rolled his shoulders and eyes as though he was disgusted with it, too.

I said, Oh, ok.. no problem and thought that meant there was no split plate fee but when we got our check: We were charged for the split plate. We had each gotten our own plate with the entree split for us, each a decent sized amount of potato.. but I couldn't tell you if it was an "entire side portion" but I can tell you they were REALLY GOOD! We each got a few strands of veggies.. again I cannot say if they were a full portion or a split down the middle amount of veggie.

The food was good... with extra bread it was enough for my DH and I to split (but we like to eat)....the ambiance was FANTASTICAL, and the service was dandy enough. Oh and FWIW: the kids meal comes with a drink and my DD ordered a mint julep and it was included :cool1: which added a fun and "free-ish" twist.

For added measure we mentioned our impending Bday and got this beautiful candle presentation of the cookie boat (which we ordered and paid for).. the candle made it great for photographing (got that from another dis'er)

I would say if you specifically asked for the soup or appetizer or whatever as your entree and said, "My DH will have the entree and I will be having the app as my entree" and were very clear (I love, crave, need, and appreciate clarification) about your plans you would not be charged for the split plate fee. In fact, if you said, "and so we do not want to be charged for the split plate fee" I think that would really get your point across. :thumbsup2

Our meal at the BB was probably the best experience we had on our trip. We really loved it.

Hope that helps!

Melissa
