More Norwalk Virus !

Well until people realize the importance of washing their hands after going to the bathroom, this will be around for a long time!

It's amazing that in this day and age that people still don't!

would it help if dcl had bathroom police. They can stand at the door and make sure everyone wash.If they find some one that not washing, Tell everyone their name over the pa system with the cabin #. Or we can put all the nasty people on a boat of their on and no one would care because they would have all things in common. The nasty cruise would cost $400 because you know the risk at hand.

4formickey you know you are not far off on your post (even though I realize you were joking). We sailed NCL SUN last year and we had the sanitizer police on board. When you boarded you had to use the hand sanitizer, when you went to the buffet...hand sanitizer, when you entered the dining room, yup you guessed it hand sanitzer. All the sanitation locations were staffed by crew members who would not let you pass until you had used the sanitizer. Sad that this is what it comes down to, but Kudos to them for trying to keep the ship healthy.

After reading the article the question that really begs is "what would you do if you had symptoms and were about to board the ship?" This outbreak seems to have started from one person. I guess I'm mildly ashamed to say that I'd still cruise HOWEVER I honestly would stay in the room until I was no longer contagious. That is the moral and right thing to do. I'd have my husband bring food in (if I felt like eating). I am normally pretty meticulous about hand washing but I think I'd be over the top if I were sick.

I wish dcl would do that.

They Did!

It was two year's ago! They actually cancelled a week due to the Virus.

4forMickey ~ you obviously have not had the privy of the affects of Norwalk!

Kathy ~ You would not want to be eating! You would be lucky to get out of the Bathroom!

Does it take much sense to know that if you are sick ,you should not go around others that my catch what you have? People that book cruises including dcl are paying a large sum of money for vacation, is it fair for one person to spoil the trip for hundreds of others? If someone past the virus to me onboard and I know who it was over board they must go  If you are sick tell someone and postphone your trip. Why cause others to miss their dream vacation because you are only thinking of yourself? :boat:

In my cabin, the bathroom police was known as MOM! We washed, we carried hand sanitizers (and used them) and we used the wipes that the Magic had at the doorway of the buffet. And I'm not a clean freak.

I know that we ALL pay a lot of money for our cruise, but I would NOT be happy to have someone come onboard who KNOWS that he/she is that sick and purposely make others sick (I understand that some people don't know they are sick). That is just selfish! Buy travel insurance, cancel & reschedule.

Great idea! I think with as many children that there are on DCL, that is a FANTASTIC idea!! I would support that 100%. Of course, I am the crazy mom, that carries hand sanitizer everywhere anyway...... My family is used to it!

my then-girlfriend, now fiance had gotten the norwalk virus from one of her patients a couple days b4 our WDW trip in january. she was then so nice as to give it to me the day before we left. i was sent home from work since my boss said i looked green. "and not a little, like you swallowed some paint." let me tell you, that thing is ROUGH!!! Luckily it went away after a day and a half (right before we left for the airport.
the one funny thing about it was i had yet to pack for our trip, and my GF offered to help. well, since she was getting her ring in WDW, i told her i'd take care of it. i was more terrified of her finding the ring when i was packing than i was of the Virus.

the benifits of insurance can not be told.Even if they told dcl upfront, I think that they would try to help them and rebook them for a later time. Let just put Monk incharge and we all will know that everything will go well.At work the other day a lady told me that she may have TB after she started coughing.I Asked her to step back some if she wasn't feeling well and she got mad. I think I should have been the one to get mad!

I whole heartedly agree! But unfortunately there are those that think that Insurance is a waste of money! They don't buy any and when something happens like illness they go ahead with their vacation hoping nobody notices. Unfortunately, it's the innocent that pay for their stupidity.

Wow..Cnn is just picking up on this story. You have to do a search but I think this appeared in a florida paper last week.
Someone had the link up before.

Been through a weeklong bout of food poisoning before. Would never wish something like Norwalk on anyone. Hopefully DCL won't be dealing with this again.

Just a little warning:
Washing your own hands and sanitizing them will only go so far, because some people just don't have any sense or concern for others.
On our DCL cruise in May of '03, not so long after another Norwalk problem, I was in the line for the Buffet at Topsiders. It was the first day, and /everyone/ had been handed out sheets about how Norwalk and other stomach flus are spread and what /not/ to do. Despite the fact that we all had to sign off on these sheets, this is what I witnessed:

Our cast:
COL (Crotchety/Crazy/Crude Old Lady)
CM (Nice castmember)

COL: "Sir, are these plates hot?"
CM: (holding stack of said plates.) "No they're not ma'am."
COL: "Are you sure they're not hot?"
CM: "They're really not hot, ma'am, I promise."
COL: "I hate hot plates."
CM: "They are not hot." (turns to help people on other side of line for a moment)
COL reaches out and puts her whole hand on the top plate on a stack of plates, then takes a plate off a different stack!!!

Saying that clearly some people were raised in a barn in relation to this would be an insult to anyone who was actually raised in a barn as they would /still/ not do something so incredibly rude, self centered and stupid!

(Sorry, clearly even after almost two years this gets under my skin)

Anyone know the incubation period for Norwalk? I returned on the Wonder this past Thursday, 1/20, after embarkation on 1/16. Went to the office yesterday, just figured the tired part was from late evenings on the cruise and 500 miles in the car Thursday.

Woke up 5 a.m. today, Saturday 1/22, with diahrrea (sorry for the spelling problems, but I'm too achy to use a spellcheck just now), chills, body ache, feeling nauseated but haven't thrown up, and to my way of thinking those are Norwalk symptoms. So all the handwashing and precautions have not prevented much in my case.

Hope others are well, maybe I just have these symptoms separate from the cruise. But thought I'd report it in case others report something similar.

I believe the Norwalk virus is 2-3 days. Food poisoning is normally withing 8-12 hours.

We were on the same cruise -- no symptoms of norwalk for us, but my son has a sore throat. Everyone seemed to be coughing the last night when we were in the Theater. I'm just glad he stayed healthy for the cruise!

this is flu season also. The way this weather is changing, people are getting sick .hot one cold the next . rain today, snow later that night.I guess the only thing we can do is to be prayful and act like Monk!

My Parents cruised Fred Olsen in November, before anyone was allowed into the dining rooms their hands were sprayed with hand cleanser, also on the meet the captain night their hands were all "cleansed" before they were allowed to shake hands.
At least this would prevent some spreading of germs.

When we sailed 2003 we were glad to have DCL sailing b/c they had docked the ships that previous December to sanitize the entire ship. When we boarded we had Purell in hand.

People were evacuated in Cozumel because they refused to quaranteen themselves in their cabin. The night before disembarkation our neighbors were up from around 2 am until we left the ship vomiting non-stop. They had two school age children who spent countless hours in the kid clubs. I'm sure they picked it up there. The only one who didn't seem to be sick was the dad. Mom was sick with the children. We escaped unscathed but I was happy to leave.

+teach your children (and demonstrate thru example please) to use sanitizer when touching objects as well as people.
+if you're going to touch a railing or button, use the sanitizer.
+use sanitizer before and after you eat. use a napkin or tissue please.
+cover your mouth (and sanitize before you shake someone's hand)

Kim :)
