OK, first, what is a STR? In this case a House or Condo that is rented in a residential zoned area, with a maximum stay of 30 days.

The city of Anaheim has officially banned them, with all permits expiring in February of 2018. A Hardship exception request now needs to be filed by March of 2017. (Passed at the last city council meeting on January 10th). Those getting permission will be allowed to operate until the funds spent on the STR are recovered. (Basically each approved Hardship will have a different expiration date, or when they sell the property, whichever comes first).

I recommend reading the entire article if you current rent a STR, or planning to for an upcoming trip. But here are a few selected quotes...

>>The city is hitting short-term rental owners not following rules for being good neighbors with more fines and using its control of utilities to shut down owners operating illegally.

Since the City Council, in August, put stricter regulations on the city’s 346 permitted short-term rentals, the city has issued 116 citations for code violations. Sixteen cease-and desist-letters have been sent out to illegal operators.

Owners of the vacation properties say renting out their place to visitors is now like walking on egg shells.<<

>>The city runs its own electric and water systems. Four un-permitted short-term rentals have had their utilities shut off since August and 16 have received notice of pending service termination.<<

>>“The city came down hard,” he said. “I got out of there. I tried to rent it out as a long-term furnished property, but I’d be losing money. So I cut my losses and sold the house. Next year, you’ll see all of these homes flood the market.”<<

So what does this mean to guests planning a visit to the Disneyland area, well, they can look at some other nearby cities (though more of them are looking to ban STR's, including Laguna Beach), or take advantage of all the new (and some older) Hotels being built in the Extended Stay style with full kitchens and multiple rooms. Also they can try and rent a Commercial Time Share near the resort, such as WorldMark, Dolphin Cove and even the GCH Villas.

If I have a STR booking or plan to get one this year, I would want to book a refundable reservation with an Extended Stay Hotel as a back up, especially if you have already bought plane tickets.

So an important heads up in regards to trip planning.
