More Disney Nostalgia

My dh ran across this in flickr, and I thought it was so cool, I just had to share. Can you imagine a letter like this today? I don't think so!

I know as a young woman and a young professional, I am very glad that things have changed.

There are still many challenges for women, but at least there are governmental checks and more opportunities.

Another food for thought: When Sandra Day O'Connor graduated second in her class from Stanford Law School, the only job she could get was as a legal secretary.

Of course, being an Inker is nothing to scoff at; I'm sure my husband would give up quite a bit to do that!

(and wasn't one of the characters in Chasing Amy (ugh ugh ugh horrid movie) an inker or painter?)

But in just a couple decades they changed, b/c wasn't it not that long after that the woman whose name I am forgetting did the Small World murals and such?

looking it up...OK so that letter is dated '38. But...

"Both Blairs soon began to work in the animation industry, joining the Ub Iwerks studio. Lee went on to work at the Harman-Ising studios before ultimately joining the Walt Disney studio where he was joined by his wife in 1940."

"After leaving the studio for a brief time in 1941, Mary traveled to various South American countries with Walt and Lillian Disney and other artists on a research tour as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Good Neighbor policy. During those trips, Mary and Lee worked on concept art for the animated feature films Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros with Mary credited as art supervisor on those films."

I surely do hope that the recipient of that letter, Mary Ford, applied, b/c it looks like only a couple years later they had opened things up to women!

I'm sure it is because all the "young men" who were holding the good jobs got shipped off to war. That is pretty much how women got their foot in the door in most male-dominated industries at that time. I'll bet Mary Ford had her pick of jobs.....until the boys came marching home, anyway.....

Hmm, interesting letter! "We've come a long way, baby!" as they say. A job in the ink and paint department is nothing to scoff at, however. Took a lot of skill and precision, I'm sure! I actually wanted to BE an ink & paint girl, till I found out they were obsolete.

Mary Blair is one of my heroes! I'm a big fan of her artistic style and bold use of color. Walt obviously saw something special in her too.

My hubby has this great video clip of a tour of the Disney studio during this time. In it, the voice over when looking in the ink and paint department says 'Look at all the pretty girls.' Ah, have times changed for the better, especially since I can say, I went to animation school. Haha

My husband went to college where that lady is from! That's weird!
