I have not gotten around to purchase a Cruise Passporter yet (I will this week), but I have a few questions.

I'm wondering how much money we should take on our cruise. Is this another room key thing or should we bring along our credit cards and even money. I will be able to drink alcoholic beverages (yes!). We're just doing a sea package (April 2006, CAT6) so from airport to port and vice versa on the way back. How much have you spent while on a Disney Cruise and on what?

Also, I'm thinking about upgrading from CAT6 to something else, maybe a 5 or 4. I haven't contacted the TA I booked through yet, but what are my chances, now, for getting an upgrade?

You will have KTTW card. All you have to do is secureit with a credit card. You can do it other ways it is just easier with a credit card. You will need money only when you are at port. You will use your KTTW card on the ship and at CC.

Tiy can allow the children to have charging priviledges if you want to. I would not. This way they will not go into Quarter Master's on you and run up a bill. :rotfl2: My DS figured out he could od this but we were lucky he only bougth one extra card.

If you want more room then you should upgrade. Otherwise the rooms are about the same. The Cat 4 is a room for max of 5 people. Other wise the Cat 6 is just as nice and a little cheaper.

On our last cruise (7day) we spent $2200 onboard. It would be 2400 if you take away the 200 credit we had. We spent an additional $2000 at the ports. We went a little crazy though. The kids were allowed to buy anything they wanted, this was becasue they had not seen their dad in 6 weeks and he knew he would not see them for at least another 6 weeks so he indulged them a little too much. He also bought DD a ring and DS a bracelet. On our 3 day cruise we spent $1200.

JSME sized it up pretty well. Everyone gets a room key that doubles as an onboard credit card. Well, maybe not the younger kids, but DS10 and possibly DD8 will if you plan to let them roam. Cash is no good on board (except for room service tips), but is king on the islands. You'll want quarters for pay phones, a stack of singles or 2 dollar bills for tips, and 5/10/20s for cabs, tips, lunches, excursions, and souveniers. Fewer merchants take credit cards on the islands than in the good ol' US of A. Travelers checks should work too but we didn't use them. Your cabin has a small safe that can hold your cash and jewelry.

Also, my experience was DS11 making friends on the sports deck right after the sail away party and never wanting to be with us or in OL. This was fine (although his new friends marvelled at how ubiquitous I seemed to be), but he did rack up a healthy arcade tab. If your DS10 is in the same mold he'll have a great time but won't want to do meals/shows/activities with you. Frankly they should have a Pinocchio-style "Pleasure Island" for boys in this category (maybe rename the CC sports pavilion this, even with cigars?), complete with turning them into a donkey in a crate at the end of the cruise to ease the process of getting them back home again. Think of how easy it'll be to get them to keep the lawn trimmed.

There were 4 of us on a 7 day, and we spent $1100 including tips. $700 of that was on excursions. $125 on wine.

After three 7-night Disney cruises, I STILL can never remember how much DH, DD and I spend onboard, and I prefer to keep it that way. :faint:

There were four of us on board the 7 day Eastern and we spent $1100 on board and probably $300 in port. Most of that was spent on souveniers, Shutters and alcohol. We did not do any DCL excursions, and a lot of money was spent in the gift shops, replacing cloting, since we did not have our luggage for the first three days.

Each family and each cruise is different. First, about upgrading. The only difference between at Cat. 5 and a 6 is location on the ship--not worth the $ in my opinion. A cat 4 is slightly larger than the "standard" stateroom because it is designed to handle a 5th person in a fold down bed. You haven't said how many of you are cruising, but only you can decide whether a few extra square feet are worth the $. Personally, we spend little time in our cabin. Unless I'm moving up to Cat 3 (which does have additional services, space, etc.), I'd stick to paying for the 6. 4 vs. 6 is really not a big deal at all, and I can use the money elsewhere. Of course, I wouldn't turn down a free upgrade unless I had a specific cabin that I really liked.

As above, you will use only the KTTW card on the ship, which will be billed to your credit card. It is billed at increments as your charges increase--usually when your onboard expenses hit $400-$800 it is billed to the credit card. You can attach the whole cabin to one credit card or each person sailing can be attached to a different card. CHildren and have charge privleges or not (your choice). What you cannot do is to limit their charging to a certain amount. Of course, you can talk to them, threaten them, etc.....but DCL is not involved in this and you are responsible for any charges they make. You can use cash for tips or charge them. The only places you need cash are the laundry room and a small amount to tip room service.

Kids really don't need charging. If you want them to have an arcade card, you can purchase it (any denomination, multiples of $10), and refill it if you'd like. They can get sodas, milk, juice, etc. on deck 9 any time. They don't need to drink smoothies.

Where you can drop major $.....the spa, alcohol, Shutters (photo shop), the gift shops, bingo, excursions. DO you have to? No. You can take your own photos. The character handlers will even take family photos for you with your camera. You can do excursions on your own, generally cheaper than thru DCL. You can bring some alcohol on board to have in your cabin or take a glass with you to dinner. You can do the unlimited rain forest/fitness center and skip the spa treatments. The gift ship can be "off limits."

Of course, the islands (except Castaway) take cash, credit cards, trav. cheques, etc.

On 7 day cruises, we have spent as little as $400 or as much as several thousand. The difference? On one cruise, I bought some jewelry for myself and my daughter. On another, some major spa time. It depends on your budget and your mood.

On the last cruise, I allowed DD to have charging, but gave her a $ amount that she could not exceed. She asked that if she didn't spend all her money, could she have it when we got home...which I agreed to. It was very interesting to find that SHE thought she didn't need smoothies when they were costing $4 of HER money. She was very responsible, and spent about half of what I allowed.

Thank you all very much. I have an idea now of how much green I should take along. I really like doing excursions so I'll budget for those.

As far as upgrading, I'll just stick witht he two CAT 6 rooms I have. I asked to be placed in the front of the boat so I hope I get what I asked for.
