CANNES, France (AP) -- U.S. filmmaker Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," a scathing indictment of White House actions after the September 11 attacks, won the top prize Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival.

"Fahrenheit 9/11" was the first documentary to win Cannes' prestigious Palme d'Or since Jacques Cousteau's "The Silent World" in 1956.

"What have you done? I'm completely overwhelmed by this. Merci," Moore said after getting a standing ovation from the Cannes crowd.

"Fahrenheit 9/11" took the prestigious Palme d'Or amid sharply divided Cannes moviegoers, who found a solid crop of good movies among the 19 entries in the festival's main competition but no great ones that rose to frontrunner status.

While "Fahrenheit 9/11" was well-received by Cannes audiences, many critics felt it was inferior to Moore's Academy Award-winning documentary "Bowling for Columbine," which earned him a special prize at Cannes in 2002. Some critics had speculated that if "Fahrenheit 9/11" won the top prize, it would be more for the film's politics than its cinematic value.

I don't like him or some of his views but i think i'll try and see this film.

Anyone else who would like to see it ??

I classify this movie with The Reagans - SMUT!

I'll probably see it on video, but I lean to the left, politically. Bowling for Columbine was quite an original film.

::yes:: me!

But I'm weird, I like Michael Moore, I may not always agree with what he says but at least he has the b**ls to say it!

You got to love Michael Moore. See http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticle.jhtml?type=entertainmentNews&storyID=515679&section=news

CANNES, France (Reuters) - After winning the top prize at Cannes for his anti-Bush documentary, American filmmaker Michael Moore said he hoped the President had not been eating a pretzel when he heard the news.

....

Asked what he thought Bush's reaction might be to the award, he told a packed news conference: "He is probably choking on a pretzel or something. I hope nobody tells him that I have won this award while he is eating a pretzel."

Bush fainted in 2002 after choking on a pretzel while watching a football game on television.

"He has the funniest lines in the film. I am eternally grateful to him," Moore said.

I am Leftie too. I so far have liked him and what I have read about the film and hope to see it at some point.

I can't wait to see it. Anything that makes people this uncomfortable is worth seeing.

I'm just disturbed that everyone is blaming politics, bad radios, etc. for 9/11 and the only ones to blame are the TERRORISTS! That is where the focus should be, on wiping them out.

I can't wait to see it I loved Bowling for Columbine and went to it figuring it was going to be terrible. Made me stop and think about a few things that is for sure. I loved how he walked into some homes in Toronto and people actually talked to him and I think even offered him a drink.

I am interested in seeing it. Are they really going to release it in the States?

As far as I know it has no release date on the US, no distributing company wants to touch this documentary with a 10 foot pole. Hope someone gets the courage to show it, just because you don't agree with someone's ideas doesn't mean that you should silence them.

Even if it does get released, I would probably have to drive to Charlotte or Atlanta to see it. The two movie theaters in my town probably won't touch it. :(

I love that Michael Moore has the guts to speak out the way he does, and especially crediting P. Bush for having "the funniest lines in the film." He does say some "funny" things now and then...and not necessarily on purpose..:teeth:

Cannes jury head Quentin Tarantino has said Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 won the Palme d'Or on merit alone.

If and when this gets released, I will be first in line to see it.

Sorry, you'll be second because I'll be first!! :teeth:

I can't wait to see it.

Funny how the minute I heard that Disney was not going to release it, I became interested. I'm sure it wouldn't have gotten one tenth of the publicity if people had not tried to censor it. Until then I couldn't have cared less. I'm sure it peaked lots of people's interest.

How can anything that makes people stop and think be bad? I will definitely be seeing this.

I don't care for Michael Moore but I love his movies. I will definately be seeing this movie.
