What can you tell me about Montreal? I had lunch with a co-worker yesterday who used to live there and now I feel like I just have to visit. I hear there are tons of great festivals in the summertime. What do you know about those? Is it expensive (silly question coming from a WDW fan!) Would it be a fun vacation spot for a family with 2 teen boys? My guys are fascinated with big cities and I'm thinking they'd like this.

This would be the first year ever we would NOT head south for a vacation. Maybe it's about time!

We spent a weekend in Montreal last May. We actually didn't see much of the city, but from what I read before our trip, there is a lot to do there. Also, I just read that the dollar is up against their currency, so it isn't as expensive as it used to be to visit Canada.

The City is absolutly beautiful - lots to see, tons of history and culture, wonderful food and shopping. My only advice is don't go in January!

Also keep in mind that Montreal is in the Province (equiv. to state) of Quebec which is unique to the rest of Canada. I would combine with a visit to Toronto to contrast just how different these cities are.

that's a good idea!

DH and I spent a week in Montreal a couple of years ago and loved it. Old Montreal is incredible as is their underground city, there is so much to do and see. The food was great, lots of shopping, the city seemed to be broken into several communities (Little Italy, Chinatown etc), we had the best meal in Little Italy and the bakeries there incredible. We didn't rent a car, as their subway system was really easy to use and they had a 4 day pass for tourist for about $15. We would love to go back there one day.

Montreal is AWESOME (coming from a MOntrealer, I know what I'm talking about ;) )

In the summer, there's the Just for Laughs Festival, the Jazz Festival, Les Francofolies... It's also a very bubbling city; there's outdoor dining everywhere and the everyone is outside between May and September (cause it's so darn cold the rest of the year LOL).

If you want to do outside stuff during the winter, I would actually suggest Quebec city; it's beautiful, and the Quebec carnival is very fun!

We have a couple of malls and different places that are all connected by underground tunnels...

So you basically take the subway to the Eaton Center, get off and can get access to other shopping centers and different places without going outside!

Montreal is a beautiful city - great sightseeing, shopping and food. It has a wonderful European feel. It's well worth visiting. Learn a few basic phrases of French - just to be polite. You'll hear (and see) it everywhere in Quebec.
