Hello,
I am planning our trip to Paris and we have a layover in Montreal for 2 hours. Just enough time to get some food since it will be dinner time. My question is what currency does the dining establishments except? I have looked everywhere and I cannot find any clarity on it. We are from California and I will have us dollars as well as euros with me. I will not be using any credit cards or atm cards for food purchases in the airports. But since I'm planning ahead I want to be sure to have to correct currency. Thank you so much in advance. This will be the very first time we have ever been in Canada.....sadly though it will just be an airport.

Hello,

All the restaurants will accept Canadian Dollars. Some may accept U.S. Dollars, but they may or may not accept them at face value (i.e. US$1 may not necessarily equal CA$1).

I've never seen any of the restaurants accepting Euros, but there may be some in the International departures area (as opposed to the Canadian-Domestic or U.S. areas), particularly since there's an ABM that dispenses Euros there.

Most should take the US Dollars, but they have a higher exchange rate. And they will give you CND money back if change is needed.

If your credit card (preferably Mastercard or Visa) has a reasonable exchange rate (2.5% or lower), you should have no problem using it. That way you're not forced into using $US at the restaurant and getting a terrible exchange rate and relatively useless $CDN in change.

Like others said, you won't have any trouble using USD to pay in the airport, but they will give you back change in CAD, and the exchange rate will not be fabulous. But for one meal, since you don't want to use credit cards, it's probably the easiest option, just be sure to have smaller bills so you don't get stuck with tons of loonies/twoonies.
