Monthly Grocery Budget Challenge!!

OK, you asked for it. I am sooo open to advice but it is a long bill....$222.22 worth to be exact! I shop at the most discount of the discount grocers in town, it is a bag your own, no frills kind of place. Total with taxes was $222.22

Dairy: skim milk(4l) 4.67, yogurt(16)3.99, becel 4.99 (I hate cheap margerine, sorry!!!), cheese slices (real) 5.49,
Fruit and Veggie: fruit cups 2.47, salad bag 1.47, .99, cauliflower .69, coleslaw .99, romaine lettuce 1.67, asparagus .99, cucumbers (3) 1.99, carrots bag 1.47, pineapple 1.99, grapes 4.58, banannas 1.53, peaches 1.77, zuchinni .77, strawberries 1.67, 1.67 mushrooms 1.48, peppers (4) 2.99,
Breads: cereal 2.88, 2.88, 2.47, 2.99 (we eat a LOT of cereal!), mac n cheese .57, .57, .57, .57, oatmeal 2.00, baking bran 1.13, pasta dry 1.49, 1.49, ww tortillas 2.99, hot dog rolls 1.49, hburg rolls 1.49, ww bread 2.29, 2.29, bagels 1.67
Meat: xlgr.beef 12.62, pork loin 5.72, oven roast 10.06, burgers boxed 7.99, 8.99, hot dog 2.97
Condiments:taco seasoning .93, .93, mustard 1.67, sp. sauce 2.97, 2.97, 1.49, salad dressing 2.54
Snacks: granola bars 1.44, 1.44, 1.97, 1.97 fruit snacks 1.49, cookies 1.79, crackers for lunches 1.49, 1.49, rice krispie squares 2.99, pretzels .93, .93

Okay first the items in blue - $11.51 - Would it be possible to use all Romaine because it lasts longer and you get more usually. Since grapes are expensive this week I would bulk up on bananas and strawberries, since you buy fruit already, make your own fruit cup. A little lemon juice will keep fruit from browning. I make a great fruit salad with apples, pears, and bananas. I cut them up shake a little lemon juice, then I take a little sour cream and brown sugar and warm in the microwave, stir and cool a bit. Add to fruit. Very good. Also since you already buy cereal and butter/margarine what about making your own rice crispies... If you were to adjust this portion of your bill it would amount to approximately a savings of $6.00

Okay now the items in red - duplicates... Thats fine when they are on sale, get them but don't include the cost in this weeks budget, deduct it from next weeks. MAKE A LIST of the items you have. This will save you $25.32 next week.

I believe you said your bill should be $175.00. So if you would take this weeks bill and adjust for the fruit items, etc that brings it down to $216.22. You spent $25.32 for next week so now your total is down to $190.90.

Now take inventory of your freezer and cupboards and don't over do... You should spend $150.00 next week. That will even you out to your $175.00 per week.

A great way to reduce your bill is to go meatless or mostly meatless for meals. Its easy to have fresh veggie stir-fry with rice and or meatless chili. I bet if you checked your cupboards before you go shopping you can come up with 2 meals that you do not have to purchase next week. You may even be able to reduce the $150.00. Okay last but not least, MAKE a list. I know that it can be boring to pre-plan your meals because you can't be overly flexible, but it helps. I put my calendar in front of me so I know who's going where each day of the following week. I write down dinners on a seperate calendar so that I can change up my meals. Looking back will remind you of a meal everyone really enjoyed or one that they really didn't like...

Okay here a recipe I used last week for a inexpensive meal...

Chicken Caesar salads w/ garlic pita squares and fruit.

I used only 2 small boneless skinless chicken breasts cubed small and pan fried in a small amount of olive oil and sprinkled with Mrs. Dash. Mrs. Dash will create a nice crust. I am weird, I cut up my romaine... So I took the plates and put on the romaine lettuce, sprinkled with parmesian cheese, topped with home-made croutons, and then put on dressings and warm chicken.

Cost

2 chicken breasts $1.50
Romaine $1.50
Croutons, dressing and parmesian cheese .50

Pita triangles (you can use leftover tortilla shells if you have them)

3 pitas cut into triangles, spread with a little margarine on each one and sprinkled with garlic powder. Baked in oven 400degrees about 6-8 minutes until crisp. Cost $1.00

Fruit - I always have this in my house and don't budget into meals, since it is eaten throughout the day.

Total dinner $4.50 Everyone was very full and DH used the extra romaine for a salad for his lunch the next day (no chicken left though)

I see that you buy 2 loaves of bread, so I would guess a few slices taken out to make croutons would not be missed. If not a bag of croutons here is $1.00 and you would only use 1/2 of it.

So, could any of this work for you??

This is probably a silly question, but how do you make home-made croutons? I'm constantly throwing out the ends of the bread because nobody will eat it. I'm sure I could use it to make croutons or breadcrumbs or something?

I freeze the bread ends, stale rolls, etc. When I need croutons I take them out of the freezer, cut them up in cubes, brush a little oilve oil on them (you can use any oil) and some seasoning and cook them in the oven on low heat till they get crunchy.

Same here but I put some olive oil in a bowl that I have a lid for. I add garlic and seasoning. (Dried salad dressing mix works also) SHAKE. I spread them out on the sheet at 350 for 20 minutes. I sprinkle grated parmesian on when they come out. Cool, store in an airtight container.

Thanks for the crouton suggestions, Amii and Tinker'n'Fun! I'm going to start saving my bread crusts! I've always hated throwing them out! Now I'll have a use for them!

NP, enjoy:)

Thanks for the crouton recipes ladies!! We always end up throwing bread away. Now I know what to do with it. I am assuming I can make toasted bread crumbs this way too if I grind up the baked croutons? I like to sprinkle them on top of casseroles and such.

ok add 9.04 to my week =98

4 shampoo @50 cents each=2$ great deal
eggs 198
grapes 98 cents a lb =5.02

I spent $60 exactly today on the following things:

Diapers
Chocolate milk (1/2 gal)
Skim milk (1/2 gal)
Laundry detergent (32 loads)
Sour cream
Cheez Whiz (healthy, I know)
Spaghetti sauce
Lean Pockets (2 packs)
Blueberries
Taco seasoning
Bananas
2 lbs lean ground beef
Tostitos
Pillsbury frozen wheat rolls (yum!)
2 boxes of spaghetti noodles
Cat litter

We're a family of 3 and this will get us through 3 dinners at least and all lunches for the week (we also have leftovers in the fridge and things in the freezer and pantry that I'll be using). We have a couple of events coming up, so I didn't have to buy dinner for those days.

The price on diapers is a budget killer for me! I know that I should go to Sam's and buy them in bulk, but I don't really have one close to me. I feel like between the gas money spent and the time to get there, it just wouldn't be worth it.

So I was doing well, but had to go to Target today. That's never a good thing because I always spend too much. I bought some things that don't classify as groceries, so I won't list them here.

Tinted moisturizer $6
Hand Soap Refill $4

Today's Total $10

Week Total $70

It's only Tuesday, so I'm going to have to really watch what I spend the rest of the week to stay close to my goal.

My budget is for a family of 5. We're 34, 34, 7, 6, 15 mos.

It's $125.00 but that includes everything (toiletries, make-up, cleaners, etc.) I have a pretty good stockpile as I've been working on getting the budget down so some weeks (like this week) when there aren't very many sales we're under that.

Oh, and we live in Ohio.

The Morningstar Farms & Bratwurst look odd next to each other, we arent vegetarian, we just LOVE Morningstar Farms Spicy Black Bean Burgers. Yummy & low cal. THey are really expensive but I had 4 $.75 off coupons & tonight they were only $2.99 at Kroger's so I snatched them up. Anyhow my totals ALREADY are scary this week! Hopefully I'll only need milk the rest of the week.

$288.10 left for the month

Our menu for this week is very fluid as I'm running around like crazy:

Monday: Enchiladas
Tuesday: Chicken Parm. Fingers & Noodles
Wednesday: Pork Tenderloin & rice mix
Thursday: ? Honestly, we'll probably have boxed pizza or spaghetti & Texas Toast
Friday, Saturday, Sunday: At my in-laws. I'll probably take up some Morningstar Farms stuff & buy more fruit to make a fruit salad. And I always take snacks as they eat at inconsistent hours & have no snacks in the house at all. Fine if you are 60-70 years old, really bad if you are 15 months old.

I've also been making breakfast for my kids as I'm so excited to have them home from school. Monday we had chocolate chip pancakes & turkey sausage. Today we toad-in-the-holes. Tomorrow I think I'll make ham and cheese scrambled eggs & hash browns.

For lunches we've been eating pb&j, mac & cheese, hotdogs & oven fries.

And for snacks: lots of fruit, popcorn, Quaker Quakes, and cereal. Lots of cereal.

Today we had special drinks: Berry Juicy Juice with sparkling grape juice (cause it was on clearance) with a berry on a little umbrella. My 6 year old said, "Oh, it's just like we're in Hawaii!" Which cracked me up because we've never been to Hawaii and why she would pick that when we've been on Caribbean cruises is beyond me but it was cute.

This looks very wierd, but I was at my in-laws and made 20 people breakfast this a.m. My B-I-L works for an egg company so milk, eggs, and cheese were already at their house. I made:
Bacon
Sausage
Ham & Cheese egg casserole
chocolate chip pancakes
regular pancakes
western hash browns
regular hash browns
fruit salad (bought the day before at Sam's & on my previous week)

It was sooooooo good. And they were all really appreciative. We were supposed to go out to First Watch (we were all spending the weekend together) and on Father's Day I was just dreading it. So instead I got up at 7 am & rushed to Giant Eagle and surprised them all. It saved them a ton of money since it was free & with 5 of us, I figured we saved money too. Plus, it was better.

The Powerades were coupons I had & on sale which made them free. It's dh's favorite drink so I stock up whenever I can. I make videos on ExpoTv for my coupon buying money so it doesn't come out of my grocery budget.

Just looked at the receipt to type it in here & noticed the Pine Sol. I bought it because it is my favorite & had a sign 1/2 off. For $2.00 that's great, but it didn't ring up!!! And now it's been 2 days & I bet you anything the sign is down & when I go tomorrow I'll have no leg to stand on. I know it's only $4.00, but you think you're getting a good deal, ya know???

Kroger's

I lost this receipt but I will try to list as many things as I can remember. It was an odd list as I was purchasing things for healthy meals for my kids, as well as gluten-dairy free stuff for my nephew.

Cilantro
Whole Wheat Flour
Rice Flour
Tapioca Flour
Rice Dream Milk
Dairy free chocolate chips
Fritos
Lays potato chips
Fruit chews
grapes
gluten free pancake mix
ground flaxseed meal
4 boxes gluten free cereal (like Cocoa Pebbles, ha!)

$100.00

Like I said, the list above is weird, and I don't know the change, but I know I had decided to go above my budget but I wasn't going to spend more than $100.00 on my nephew. I was thrilled when it was exactly $100 & change.

Left for the month -$27.48

So I went over, but the reason was making breakfast for 20 people instead of all going to First Watch (which would have cost me at least $30.00) and buying gluten free stuff for my nephew.

I'm really excited to start on July. I'm pretty sure with the way we have been eating & the fact that we just get to stay at home for a month, that we will be under budget in July. Maybe even $27 under budget! Ha!

well I am going to shopp again tomm.. I have to get more of that 50Cents shampoo. I plan to get at least 10$ worth.... The store is Price Chopper, top care brand. It works great !

What are ya'lls thoughts on going over your weekly grocery budget in order to buy items that are on special even if you dont need them this week?:confused3

Here is the scenario: I am doing the challenge of $75 per week for fam of 5 not including household products in this total (I have a sepaate line item for those things). I am underbudget (:cool1: ) for this week but only by $10 so far. I dont NEED anything right now, we are stocked. But Publix is having a very good sale of itmes that I will NEED in about 2 weeks. Seems silly to pay a higher price 2 weeks from now when I can buy these items right now as BOGOfree and 10-4-10 deals.

How does everyone handle this?

Gobalmom I say GO FOR IT. If you can save money by buying it now DO IT!

Gobalmom I say GO FOR IT. If you can save money by buying it now DO IT!

If I am under, I would just go for it, but make sure you remember you spent that money. If its a great deal and I go over, I just deduct it out of my next week and adjust.

If I am under, I would just go for it, but make sure you remember you spent that money. If its a great deal and I go over, I just deduct it out of my next week and adjust.

Good plan to account in next week's budget. Thanks!
