Month of September - WISH Team Walkers and Runners

David: How was your Brixx 10K? I haven't looked for a RR yet, but I'm hoping you felt good about your effort. And I know you looked great in your WISH singlet. I always say that everyone looks good in WISH green! :thumbsup2

Manda: I know I've said hello in other places, but a big HI to you on the monthly thread as well! :yay:

Megan: Just another congratulations on your PR at the Philly Distance Run! What a great event for you! Did you meet up with Kira, JenB, Howard, Lou, or any other WISHers?

Carrie: What you said about SLRs...so true. What I love about the weekly thread, and WISH in general, is that we're all hear to support each other in our fitness journeys. No matter where those journeys may lead us! :woohoo: (Hopefully to WDW, of course! ;))

Maura: Congratulations on your new adventures. I thought about you more than once this weekend, about how brave you are to take on a new professional journey. (Where? Off to Zanzibar to meet the Zanzibarbarians!)
It reminds me of how you've branched out with your fitness journey. I look forward to hearing about your new plans and will cheer you on with those, too!

DianeL: Oh no! I didn't know about your hamstring! :scared1: How's it feeling? Have you recuperated fully now? I find it so difficult to give priority to the recovery/rest portion of the training plans, but that's so important. I'm so glad you're listening to your body. And I'll always support eating ice cream for medicinal purposes, even if it's a Klondike bar. See what you'll do for one? :rotfl2: (DOOD enjoyed Ben & Jerry's Cake Batter after his 50K. Well earned, that treat.) And listen to you being all so faux-slackerish about your January plans. Admit it, you're just planning on hanging back for the prime picture-taking opportunities. More face time with the characters. (Good idea! Mind if I join you?)

Patricia: I remember you from earlier this year! :goodvibes Welcome to the monthly thread! Great job training for the 3 Day Breast Cancer walk, and a great cause to boot! :worship: It's great that your whole family is involved in a bunch of events--that will make training more fun. (Training with your WISHers enablers will, too, like Cam!) FWIW, I'm much more prone to blisters when I walk--they're not so much a problem for me when my running intervals are longer than the walking ones. WTG with your 33 miles, though!

Frank: Great advice, as usual. We're so lucky to have you here on WISH and the weekly thread. I find that doing local events, smaller and not too competitive, also keeps me motivated toward January. (Too competitive and my tortoise-paced self wants to crawl back into her shell.)

Tracy: Great job working with some jogging intervals. Is that just for your longer events, or preparation for marathon 2010? Taking it slow on the transitions will help you avoid the shin splints (as you know, of course). Question: You don't use Garmi for your intervals? :confused3

Dale: Hello, Dale, and welcome! I used to say I didn't need to run because nothing and no one ever chased me....:rotfl2: But something about hanging out with runners and fitness/racewalkers and seeing my DH at races changed my mind. I think they spike the spectator water. Anyway, welcome to WISH and I do hope your PT clears you for training. It sounds like you have the mental strength and determination and have been temporarily sidelined by some pesky injuries. I'm very glad you're prioritizing healing! :thumbsup2

Sandy: Oooh, I'm so glad you're (re)re-committing, that you have a solid training plan, and some accountability with your blogging! Plus you're recruiting for our WISH threads (both online posting and wearable gear). Yay! :yay:

Vicky: WTG with your inadvertant pace run! That bodes well for your race next weekend. (I wish I was going to be there--truly I do. Send me your bib # so I can track you!)

Cross-Posted

As for me: Okay, so I finished my b2bs this weekend with no pain. Of course, it was just a 6/3 b2b, but I'll take pain-free any day. I'm really working on the stretching to avoid further injury, but I get so lazy about my cool downs. Somebody should kick some sense into me. I also did some XT and weight training this weekend, despite being out of town and away from my beloved gym, so I'm feeling in a groove for the beginning of the week. Yay! We'll see how that holds up with this upcoming weekend's 7/14 b2b. :rotfl:

Oh, and in a totally budget-cool moment for me. I was shopping in TJ Maxx today and found a pair of my NB 1224s on sale for $40. Can you believe it? Of course I snatched them up! :woohoo:

Mini-Ultra Report for DOOD
In the bigger news, for DOOD (yes, pronounced Dude), who's also doing the Dopey with me. Or at least on the same days.... He finished his first 50K ultra. Woo hoo. :woohoo: That's the good news.

The bad news is, there was some "slight" misrepresentation of the event. It was billed as a pavement and trail race that was friendly to both beginners and experienced ultramarathoners. Apparently, what they mean by pavement and trail was a 10% pavement/90% split. And what was friendly about the race? Well, the maximum finishing time was 8 hours, and all the organizers and participants were very friendly....

The trails weren't really running trails--more like gullies, small ravines, paths overgrown and filled with roots, and monkey hills. Nothing like our local trails. And hills, lots and lots of steep hills everywhere. We knew something was up when a lot of the racers were wearing vertical running shirts. And the RDs give out an annual award to the "runner most injured on the course"--this year, a 25K participant broke a bone in his arm. Needless to say, this was NOT the race DOOD thought he'd signed up for, and he hadn't trained for this kind of trail/running challenge. Nor had he brought his trail running shoes...

So when I didn't see him or his friend hit the 25K point until 3:30, I knew he wasn't going to make his goal time of 5 1/2 hours. :rotfl2: t was no surprise when the fastest time for the 50K--a course record--was 4:02. I'd done a little of the trails for my run while I was spectating, and I can't believe anyone could do 50K on that course that fast. Wowsa!

Back to the good news...DOOD finished the race in 6:52:57 (and his friend in 7:23:28, as they parted ways in the last 6 miles of the course). His Garmin said his pace ranged from 4.5 mph to 8.0 mph. He wasn't as tired afterwards as he was after his training LSD, although his quads, abductors, and arms hurt. And his "dogs were barking," according to him and his feet were the only part that needed icing.

Anyway, I'm so very proud of him for toughing out a race that was entirely different from what he planned for or trained for. He had a great time, IMO, and even managed to enjoy the experience. (That said, he's not signing up for another one soon.) And to put things all into perspective...he finished the 50K ultra trail run/hike/climb in less time than it took me to finish last year's marathon. :lmao: Now I think I hate him. :rotfl2::worship:

Okay, full disclosure, you would not have taken that long if you hadn't slowed down to wait for my DH! :lmao:

Congratulations to DOOD for starting, and finishing, what was clearly a tough race! :worship:

I had one of those runs tonight where you just think "wow" and realize that you really have come a long way. DH and I went to a nearby track to do speedwork - had decided to try the Yasso 800's that RW has been mentioning. Several of my teammates are doing them, so we figured we'd see how it worked. The plan was to run 800 meters at marathon pace, followed by 400 meters at an easy pace, and repeat the sequence 4x. My problem with this is that I didn't think I could run 800 meters non-stop even once, let alone 4x. And even though my Richmond buddies are shooting more for a 12:00 pace, I decided I wanted to do the 800's at an 11:00 pace, so I needed to finish each 800 in 5:30. We walked 1200m to warm up and then began. 1st round - finished in 10:45. Whoa! Walked 400m, started running again. Finished in 10:30. Okay, I don't run this fast. :scared1: Walked 400m, repeat. 10:30. 4th round, still feeling really strong. Try really hard to slow down and meet my target of 11:00. 10:45 for the last 800. :confused3

So my realization is that first, I obviously am in much better shape than I thought, since running 4 sequences of 800m wasn't much of a problem at all. Second, I apparently am capable of running faster than I think I am! DH and I have been running together for a few weeks, and although he slows down to run with me, I speed up to run with him, and it must be paying off. All in all, it was a really good workout. I think I'll continue doing the 800's at the faster pace, and then I'll be prepared for whatever pace we choose to run in Richmond.

Jackie

Here I am! :-) Thought you lost me, didn't you? We're back! I thought Noah was posting, but we had some mis-communication.

I posted our race report (with photos) on the Philly Distance Run thread. Short version: Marriott=feathers=allergies/asthma attack for me all night, cool morning, WISH friends, potty break=end of corral start, PR. :-)

Debra! Pain-free is important, and excellent! I can't kick any sense into you right now--can't lift my legs high enough. ;-) Great find on the shoes! And it's almost time for...pumpkin ice cream! Which I hear is excellent for training. :-) How are things with you?

DOOD is amazing. I would have wandered off to find a snack under those conditions. Tell him well done! :-)

DianeL, I am pretty sure that Klondike bars have been shown to improve training. Ask Debra. :thumbsup2

:Welcome: Patricia and Dale! Make yourselves at home here. I love the WISH team, and I never thought I'd exercise on purpose. Everyone here is so supportive. And wow-33 miles in one weekend! Woohoo! And I agree with whoever (Frank?) suggested you sign up for a local race before January-the race itself can be overwhelming. Good to have a trial run at it in a competitive environment.

Hi, Judy! :)

Vicky, tapering is good. Especially if you are busy with family dinners. :) Sounds like you are working your plan. Good luck in your race!

Sandy
, great to see you back here! Woohoo! I know you can do it! :) Do you have a training plan picked out?

Racey Tracy
: Hey, girlfriend! How's Mt Trashmore? How's mom? Tell Judy I said hello! I came across the video of the Circle of Life 5K last week and thought of you two. And I think The Noah is considering a visor to go with his lime hat. :) I'm going to try to pick up intervals for January, too, in an attempt to get off the course sooner.

Maura! Aargh, Matey! Sorry I missed talking like a pirate. Looks like you did a good job of handling it for us. Well done! And I haven't seen Muppet Treasure Island (I know! I can't believe it either!). I'll put it on the list. How's training going?

Frank, sorry we missed you at the Rocky statue on Sunday. Are you still in Philly or back home?

Hi, Carrie! And yes, celebrate every milestone, even if it seems like everyone else here does your long day as their regular distance. :) Good advice! How are things going with you?

Megan, great to see you on Sunday! Way to go, girl! :) How are you feeling today?

:welcome: Manda! We are hoping to do DL next year (husband wants the extra medal!). How is training going?

Good to see you back, David! The WISH green always makes me feel a lot faster. Good luck! Does your singlet have the pockets in the back? The Noah was wishing he had one this weekend.

Hi, Susan!

Hi, Anne! Big hug to you!

Hey, Lily! Congrats on your great run in Erie! :) We picked up some Roctane this weekend and thought of you. Hope I didn't overlook your trip report!

AlohaJeff is real, people! Thought of you this weekend, Jeff. Since I had only done one race before this one at the half distance, technically, this was my first non-AlohaJeff half. :( Sorry we couldn't make it to DL. See you in January! What's your next race, Honolulu? Wish we could be there cheering you on!

Diane, have fun at RftT! Wish we could go!

Hi, Hockeychic!

Jackie, way to get those miles in! Woohoo! 20 miles! I was proud of myself for doing the half. Not ready to commit to a full!

Hi, Syko! Looking forward to seeing you in January. I bet your daughter is getting so big!

Hi, Kara! What did you decide about the Halloween race?

LIZ
! Missed you this weekend. Hope you are feeling better. It wasn't the same without you! Hi, Patrick! :)

Sorry to anyone I missed!

Duckie

I am feeling so much better than I thought I would be today. I can actually walk. After my last half I was seriously considering a wheelchair to get around the parks. I'm sore, but stretching a moving is helping!

Debra, My race is this Saturday. My legs are feeling good. I ran 90 miles last week with no speedwork. I am not going to run any doubles this week and also cut down the miles on Thur - Fri. So far this week I ran Sun - 18, Mon - 9, this morning - 10. I will plan on running, Wed - 15, Thur- 8, Fri - 5.

Still have no idea what kind of time I will run. I have stayed away from any kind of fast speedwork to avoid injuries that I have had in prior years. A couple of weeks ago I ran 10 miles at 7:40 pace in the middle of a 15 miler comfortably. So I think a sub 42 10K is possible.

Duckie -- I have a Raceready WISH singlet without pockets. Don't think I would want a shirt with pockets. Too much bouncing around. I do have some Sugoi 42K shorts with pockets and also some Raceready shorts with pockets. That way you can keep the weight right on your hips.

David

Deb- I love local races, not only for the motivation but because I won't have to buy a t-shirt for the rest of my life.

Jackie- Congratulations on the track workout.

Duckie - No, I am back home. It was just a one night for me. I left Cleveland 5:00am Saturday, got in just after noon and then left at noon after the race. It was pretty much a drive by half marathon...or run by I guess.

Megan- Glad you recovered quicker. Seeing you are in PA you probably have the same problem I do. In the winter getting the long runs in is harder, so when you do the spring halves your legs just don't have the mileage in them to recover. Same happened to me for the CMM in April. After a summer of training though your legs have the miles in them to recover quicker.

I was supposed to have a softball double header last night but apparently it rained on and only on the softball fields because it was rained out and nothing else in the area was wet. I'm hitting the gym after work and probably doing a short run tonight.

Wow, so much happening!!!!

Patty & Dale - So good to see you here!!! (Scott and I were to your right at the VR dinner) can't wait to cheer fro you in January!

Duckie!!!!! So glad you're back! Missed you. Glad you got to see the WISHers in Philly. Life is good here. Did 3 more tri's this season and had moment of improvemnt (and several learning experiences) in all of them.

Jackie - Woo hoo!! That's awesome! SO happy for you!!!

DAvid - 90 mile week? Wow. Good luck this weekend!

Debra - Huge congrats to Dood. Congrats to you on good b2bs, too! That's awesome!

Diane - The box you are righting in is white. There is a grey box around it. Upper right are 3 icons. The one on the left of those 3 is the spell check. You are using ie, right? Hope you are feeling better!

Megan - So glad you feel so good post-race. That's a huge sign of imporvement!

Frank - Sorry about your game. Hope things dry up soon!

Vicky - Glad you had such a great 8-miler. yes, cool weather does wonders. Good luck on your race this weekend!

Sandy - Been wonderign where you were. COngrats on the 2 weeks!!!

Tracy - Congrats on the pace improvements iwth the run intervals! Way to go!!!!

Maura - How 'bout them Lions? Funny, I saw posts about people being thrilled MOnday Night football is back. COuldn't understand why that meant nothing ot me. Besides being mostly after my bedtime, taht being a Lions fan was likely it. :rotfl: Thank goodness my true footballl love is U of M and it is a much better year fro them. Hope you are making hte most of your time off and enjoying it too!! Oh, and a belated Arghh!!!!

My traning was showe buying. My beloved 2140s were ok for the summer, but they squished the ball of my foot on LRs over 6 to 8. Sounds liek this is a somewhat universal ASICs problem caused by them making their logo bigger. Hop[ing the wide width isn't oo wide fo me. We'll see. My local running store isn't doing so well and has issues gettign shoes :sad1:, so had to go about 45 min to get to another. Hoping i don't have to take them back, as it wastes precious trinaing time. You know me. I'd never use somethign liek that as an excuse not to train. :rotfl:

Wow, so much happening!!!!

Patty & Dale - So good to see you here!!! (Scott and I were to your right at the VR dinner) can't wait to cheer fro you in January!

Hi Carrie, can't wait to see you again in January. We've made so many wonderful friends through Cam & Howard and all these Wishers.

Good morning wishers. Well it sounds like i made another rookie mistake. The Physical Therapist said i have muscle strain in my right leg due to lack of flexibility ( stretching, whats that?):confused3 and wearing crappy shoes (whats up with that WalMart and Payless):confused3. The good news is that she is going to stretch me out (ouch) :yay:and now i'm wearing better shoes (ahhh support).:cool1: I can't do any running yet but i am allowed to walk at Disney pace (16 minute mile):thumbsup2. I walk faster then that to the frig for a snack :rotfl2:. It's amazing reading about you alls training and races. I just want to finish the 1/2 at WDW in January.

Hello Wishers....

I am new to the Disboards, but not to running Disney. I ran my first Disney marathon back in 2000, and have come back almost every year since then. Once you get Disney running into your blood, it's hard to get back to normal running and training.

To celebrate my 10 years of running Disney, I have decided to run the Goofy for the first time. Time for a new medal, and a new challenge. Hope to see you all at the starting line......

I just want to finish the 1/2 at WDW in January.

Dale - We all started where you are. The resson many of us stay, besides the amazing firendships we've made, is that we can never have our first half or full back. The closest way is to relive them by helping others achieve their goals. BTW, yours is the best to have. NO matter if you beat teh sweepers by 2 hours or 2 min, finishing your first half or full should be a huge thrill. Setting a goal that may not be attainable leads to disappointemnet when there shoudl eb none. Hope tehe muscle is better soon. Glad you can at least keep moving while you heal!

Jim - Welcome!!!! Look forward to sharing mmore with you!

Duckie!!!! I am so glad to "see" you! My training is going great--knock wood. Have you taken any more risque pictures/videos lately? Just remember....turn off the camera/Video BEFORE you put it in your lap!!!

Debra The Zanzibarbarians say hello (Gosh, I love that movie....what does that say about me?!) Thanks for your positive thoughts....I have a great Dilbert cartoon, which I just threw out about Alice, positive attitudes and paperweights. Priceless! And pass along congrats to DOOD for an awesome outing! Also, there is no "butt-kicking" icon, so just get out there and do your cooldown. I have come to enjoy my post-run stretch. Look at it this way---you get to lie down on a mat/towel/ground whatever. Just don't close your eyes and go to sleep!

Jackie WTG on your speed work. I find it fun to mix it up and amazing that I can go as fast as I do--even if it is only for a few miutes at a time. My current speedwork for my marathon plan is slower than what I was doing over the summer, but my legs feel better, so I think that's a good tradeoff.

Megan Hooray for feeling good after your half. Makes you consider doing another one, right?

To all the new guys "Welcome aboard", as the will-be-replaced Captain Rex likes to say on Star Tours. Hope to meet you all in January. This will be one big WISH meet.

Did my speedwork today and tomorrow will have to fit something in before I spend the day prepping for my very first colonoscopy on Thursday. Oh yippee. How will I go that long without food!

Maura

Hi everyone! Just a quick drive by for me today... I had planned to do a 30 min. tempo run this morning but it was really humid. I couldn't seem to get myself up to speed so I decided to cut it short and do a 2 miler instead. That was on my schedule for tomorrow so I'll get back out tomorrow morning and the tempo run again.

I'm trying to decide whether to register for a 10K or a 10 miler in November. They're both part of the same race but was sort of hoping for a good 10K time.

Have a great day everyone!

Duckie: hey girlfriend... I told Mom you said hello. She is doing the 5K again this year and talked a friend into doing it with her and I am also. Mount Trashmore is great and getting improvements. Whoo Hoo!

Here is a list of people who asked for nametags or I had nametags from this past year.
If your name is highlighted with yellow then please send me a SASE. The address is on the thread.

Hi Folks!! Just a quick post before we head off for 2 weeks at WDW!! Whee! Been MIA because things have been crazy trying to get house, pets, life squared away before we go.

I did buy new shoes (Adidas), wore them for a 3 1/2 miler, then for my 8 mile training last Saturday, ended up with the most WICKED shin splints ever!!! Took the shoes back on Tuesday, exchanged them for Sauconys. They felt great last ngiht for 3 miles, but the real test will be my 9 miles tomorrow morning. Problem is my one shin is still really smarting, but I've been icing and will take it easy...after all, don't want to spoil my park time!!! :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Yes, we did end up registering for the Healdsburg Wine Country 1/2 marathon! It's on Halloween, but the real motivator for me is the wine, :drinking1. So we will keep up as best we can while in FL, then return to the serious long days when we get back.

Next up: Princess 1/2??? I'm considering it...

Hope everyone is doing well, I haven't had time to catch up yet, but hope to soon!

Hey all,

Came through my first colonoscopy yesterday with flying colors. May not drink Gatorade for a while though!:rotfl:

Today I took the dog for one of our longer walks. We covered part of the LR route that I do. And about two miles from home, I pass this oil/tar spot on the ground.....

Every time I see it, it reminds me of why I'm training.......

Maura

Nice Maura! I've got a picture like that from my office parking lot. It actually made it into one of the Disney blogs I follow through Twitter.

Hi everyone! It's a rest day for me - I've got my 1/2 on Sunday so I'm just taking things easy! I'm looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow

Maura - Cool pic!

Tracy - Will send you a message about the WISH hats.

Kara - Glad you were able to exchange your shoes for new ones! I hope they work out :)

Have a great weeekend everyone!

Hi Everybody!

I've been MIA for a while, but it was because I was on vacation!:goodvibes Wish I still was. Got back from my trip to Hawaii and completed the Maui Half-Marathon. I walked the entire way. First time I didn't run even a little. I finished in 3:30:33. The course was an out & back, flat course with gorgeous views. Started at 5:30 AM, which was good because I was almost halfway done when the sun came up. The 1st half I was on a 15 min. per mile pace. The 2nd half of the race was tough. When the sun came up , it was HOT and humid. The last 4 miles I was sweating like crazy and slowed down.
I found a walking buddy who was about the same pace as me. She was from Calif. We chatted the whole way from mile 3 to the finish. Helped take our minds off the heat a little.
I had a great time. I'll have to post my bling picture later, as they ran out by the time I finished. They said I should have it within the next 2 weeks.
The race was small, about 1200 each for the 1/2 & full.
Now to get ready for Goofy!

Jeff - Have you ever had malasadas from Leonard's Bakery. I think I'm gonna miss them the most.

Terri

CONGRATULATIONS, Terri!! Bummer about no bling when you finished, though. Proud of ya!!

Vicky, sending you good WISHes for a great race this morning!! Hockeychic's DS will be out there, too!

Patty and Dale, welcome to WISH!! I can say I knew you when you did your first 1/2, Patty!! By the time you do WDW, you'll have WISH friends every where on the course and scream teamin'!! Listen to Coach Cam and Howard about those blisters, Patty. Pay attention to your PT, Dale!! No slacking her instructions!! ;)

So glad to read of the great times the Philly group had!! Doing a race with WISHers around is the best! :woohoo:

Sandy, so good to see you back!! :yay:

Diane, just so you know you're not crazy..I don't have spell check on my screen either. For some reason, I don't get a choice of font colors any more either. I just get "black" so I have to type the color I want. :confused3

Still getting my steps in for Goofy. We're doing RftT in two weeks, followed by a half in IA the following week. Hey, if you've got to train this much, you may as well get some bling for it, right?? :lmao:

:goodvibes Anne
