Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness.

Welcome lolacat and rubato

Jump right in...some one will be starting the Oct. thread soon so look for that.

So...the weather was a little cooler today and I pulled out my running skirt with attached capis. They felt "weird" while I fixing breakfast and packing lunch for my son, but when he left, I took off for a run. During the first mile I thought "these things are on backwards" so back to the house and turn then around. The next miles went well, although it wasn't that cold and I was over dressed. When I got home and was stretching I noticed the skirt hem was on the outside..."hum" so I wore my skirt backwards for the first mile and insideout for the next 5. Hope that gives you a good laugh and if you saw me today, I just want you to know I figured it all out. Have a great weekend!

So I wrote all this and hit post and bam..Carrie has already started the Oct. thread-thanks and I look forward to the fall adventures. I started mine with a crazy 6 miler.

Hi everyone! :goodvibes

My first ever 10K is on Sunday! Woo?

And my "official" training for the WDW HM starts on Monday. I'm following the run/walk plan in Marathoning for Mortals.

For now...I'm getting in bed. Going to my new running club's First Friday Social as the newest member was fun and free...but oy do I need water and aspirin! (I'm a lightweight. Only 3 drinks. But they were strong...I watched one of them be made and it was like 3/4 rum and 1/4 diet Coke. Yikes!)

Beth ... Have fun on your 10k tomorrow!!! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Welcome Lolakat & Tandy!!! :flower3:

Did a 3 mile run Thursday night. Keely set the pace. 3 miles in 34 minutes. Avg 11:19 :woohoo:

Mile 1 was FAST! Went well and probably so well because it was cooler....10:59! Mile 2 = 11:41 Thanks to a cat running across our path and me NOT being aware until the leash went hard and fast to my left. Dug my heels in and "Leave the cat, NO, come, NOW! Leave the cat!" pull, tug pull FINALLY she decided to continue our run. Mile 3 = 11:18.

It was a great run. We both were fine after. We finished with a nice long-ish walk.

Friday was spent doing yard work, unpacking Halloween boxes (stairs with boxes down and up again! I'm calling it cross-training!)

Today was raining enough that it was a nice relaxing kick the feet up day :)

Does everyone else's dog's ears perk up when they turn their garmin on? LOL Fast asleep and the little chirp had her head popping up to see if we were heading out

Hope the weekend is treating everyone well!

Joan You're not the only one who's run/exercised with clothes inside out. I'm pretty sure once I went to my gym with my shirt inside out...now that's embarassing! Just had to let the world see my non-existent fashion/dressing skills!

Beth Hope your race was great. Let us know. It's always exciting to hear about a person's first race.

Diane WTG you speedy person! And my dog's ears perk up for the sound of any type of food bag or preparation!

I am taking several days off and no long run to try and rid myself of a calf strain that won't go away. It is a nagging little thing!

Maura

Hi all, I'm new here - this is my first post so I hope I'm putting it in the right place. I found this board and the WISH team when looking for info on the Disney half marathon. I am new here but not new to Disney. I am a huge fan. I did the Disney College Program in 1997 and moved to Orlando (from Minnesota) permanently in 2000. My parents are DVCers although we use it much differently since I moved here.

It has always been a goal of mine to run in the Disney half marathon and I've decided that this is my year. I'm using the Galloway method training schedule and yesterday was my longest run ever - 5 miles. I feel great today and can see that this is doable for me. I'm excited!

My goal is to finish the half healthy and lose weight along the way. I have a wonderful husband who is supportive and two boys 5 and 4 mos. Losing the baby weight and staying in shape is my overall goal.

I look forawrd to getting to know you all.

Joan - thanks for the laughs on the clothing. :lmao:

Welcome Kristy If the half in Jan is too soon...just think about the Princess Half at the end of Feb. So much fun and so many girls!

Maura Hope your calf heals quickly. What race have you been training for all summer (all those 20 mile runs)? That is so impressive.

DianeDon't own a dog. And I hate being barked at or chased.

Beth Hope your 10k was awesome.

Hi guys!!

I posted my race report in the weekend thread, but in summary, it was really good!

I made sure to run my own race - not the race the others around me were running. Actually until the point into mile 5...or maybe even 6 where we were circling this center area, I wasn't positive I wasn't last. But then I saw people coming the way I'd just come. I had made up my mind I wasn't worried either way - I was doing it!! I ran some and walked some - I'm still figuring out my ideal ratio, so I went with how I felt. The last mile or so, my right knee tightened up, so I walked a good bit more to be able to run across the finish and hopefully not do too much damage. (It's feeling ok...I've been resting it and "icing" it with a bag of frozen fried rice.) But I'm still probably not going to do my training run tomorrow just to be safe - I'm following the Bingham-Hadfield run/walk a half plan and was supposed to start my WDW half training tomorrow, but they say if you have an injury to rest for 3 days...and Wednesday was my rest day anyway...so I will likely follow that. I'd hate to be injured worse!

The best part was I had on my new running club singlet today, and a club member I haven't met yet (I'm a new club member) was the course marshall at around 4.1. I rounded the corner and heard "WOOHOO!!!! YEAH FRONT RUNNERS!!!!!!" and then she asked if I was Beth (we've talked via the listserve, so I knew she was volunteering) and was soooo encouraging!! I know that bumped up my pace for that mile...and made running up the little incline right after her curve even easier!

My chip time was 1:17:19, so I'm pretty pumped!! The predictor sites show me at a 2:50 Half pace... Should I still submit the time to Disney?

Now I'm trying to decide about dinner. I really want pizza...but I'm comfy in my pjs and don't want to leave the house even if it is to go just around the corner! LOL.

Dale and I got out for our 9 miler yesterday. It was so much cooler, felt good. I followed the tips here and had no leg/shin pain at all!!! I was so relieved and I'm not sore at all today. (totally worn out yesterday though). I think I'll have to find a race partner as I really hold Dale back. I finally told him to run the last two miles and I walked. Also, he had no heal pain today, another good thing.

Well, I'm off to study for my Anatomy & Physiology exam (and lab quiz), all tomorrow night! (ugh!)

Beth - Congratulations on your finish! You did a great job running your own race. It's amazing how good it feels to have someone along the way to offer that little bit of encouragement. Take it easy for a couple of days and keep icing the knee and you should be ready to jump right into training for the half.

Patricia - :woohoo: for no shin pain. Glad the tips helped! Now keep reminding me to do them. :rolleyes1 DH gets so frustrated with me when we get a mile into the run and I start whining. I don't have problems on my longer runs, since I'm running at a slower pace, but I run faster with him and it seems to cause the pain.

Kristy - :welcome: Congratulations on your 5 mile run. That's a big milestone! I've been a member of a Galloway group for 4 years now and absolutely love the run/walk system.

Maura - What race are you doing?

Diane - Running with the dog requires WAY too much awareness of everything else going on. I'm not that coordinated. :rotfl: Mine recognize all running gear, but when I pick up the harness, that's when she goes completely berserk. Then she knows she's going and not being left behind.

Tandy - :welcome: to the monthly thread!

Joan - You could just claim that you were trying to keep the seams from bothering you... :rolleyes1

Ran a very hilly 10 miles with our group yesterday. We sprinted the last quarter mile - that was actually a lot of fun. Then I had brunch with several members from a different pace group; my "short" 10 mile run ended up taking up nearly half my day! Just got back from taking the dogs for a walk with my running buddy - we've started a routine of doing a 3 mile walk on Sunday nights as a recovery from our Saturday long run, and just to catch up on chitchat! :)

Jackie

Kristy Welcome! Sounds like your training is off to a great start. Hope it continues to go well.

Joan & Jackie I am running the Detroit Free Press Marathon. It covers two countries in one race! The medal is in my siggie below. My mantra is "BQ, BQ....."

Beth Congrats on your race. It is amazing what running into someone on the course that you know will do for your pace (well, not LITERALLY running into them!)

Patricia Glad your run was pain free!

Day 3 of rest for me. Neurosing about "losing speed". Yeah, yeah. I have to remember my new running motto....."Don't overthink it. Don't underestimate it" Today is the day to focus on the "not overthinking" part!

Maura

Maura and Jackie ~ Thanks! :goodvibes: Yeah...I knew Rachel was going to be somewhere, and it turned out she was in the perfect spot for me - right at a slight incline and just as I was getting ready to fuel.

I've analyzed what my right knee is doing, and it's what my left knee did a few months ago. I'm pretty sure it's IT Band stuff - I'm getting a twinge just below my butt on my right leg and the outside of my knee - especially when I go down stairs. Same MO as the left...then I rested for a couple of days and learned some IT Band stretches (you'd think I would have learned...and I do stretch out the right side, but tend to do like 3 reps on the left and 1-1 1/2 on the right) and it was better. So that's what I'm doing.

My WDW Half training plan is the run/walk in Bingham and Hadfield's Marathoning for Mortals and I was supposed to start tomorrow...but I'll be resting. Three days (as they say...if it happens on Monday, you rest Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday...so I'm off M, T and W...then I'll take my 35 minutes on Thursday pretty easy). Gah!! But better to rest than make worse!

Maura ~ Good luck on your rest and your upcoming Marathon!

Joan ... was barked at again last night. The barking I think on most days I can take. It's when they launch themselves at the big front windows or the fence. Just waiting for one of them to break free.

Jackie ... I'm surprised I survive some runs :lmao: That recovery walk sounds nice and relaxing )

Beth ... PD thoughts for the knee. Hope it's feeling better soon.

PJStevens.... YAY on the 9 miles!!! Glad the legs/shins held up and everything worked for you :)

Welcome Lilscubagirl1!!!

Did 6 miles last night. Slow. Walked a bit. Someone wanted to pull. Bothered my hips and knees/legs. So we walked. She wasn't happy at all. We did some running but I'd say mostly walked. Oh well Tuesday night hopefully will be better. Even if it's getting dark we both seem to run a bit better then.

Someone wanted to pull. Bothered my hips and knees/legs.

Funny that you should say that. Last night on our "recovery walk" I mentioned to my friend that my hip was really bothering me because Sienna was pulling so hard. Glad to know it wasn't my imagination! :thumbsup2

Hi all.

I've been on some of the training threads in the past few months but hung out on the W&D thread mostly in the weeks leading up to the race.

After the race & wicked ITB & knee issues, I'm thinking of switching to Galloway. I'm wondering how others make out with it and if you can maintain a middle of the road pace with it. I'm not trying to win any races here, but I'm admittedly a bit competitive & would like to finish with the best time I can manage.

Have any of you worked with this method?

Thanks!

I have suffered some IT band issues..right and left. I went to the Dr. and then did PT. That was over a year ago. I still do my PT exercises, only run 3 days a weeks (used to run 5 or 6), lots of stretching and ice after a run, and take Aleve. I still at times have some pain, but not always and never as severe as before.

I think the best solutions is to see a sports doctor and get some good help so that you can continue to run. Just for reference I average 9:45 mm on long run and speed work on the TM I take up to 8:30.

Hope it gets better for you.

bounceliketigger Jackie(mousedogmom) can give you great info on Galloway--many people on the boards do it. I want to second Joan on finding a way to conquer/manage your ITB issues. After all, you will still be running --and that will impact your ITB. I also have had ITB issues, bad enough to go to the doctor and have PT. This year--knock wood-- they have been kept in check. I was given strengthening and stretching exercises to do. I also have become more serious about yoga this year, and I really believe the combination of strength, stretching and balance that yoga provides has helped. Especially the stuff that deals with strengthening and opening up the hips. Also, a foam roller is a great tool for working the kinks out of that area.

Good luck with trying Galloway and finding a solution for your ITB issues.

Hey Maura, Hanging in there? I'm sure your pace/speed will be just fine. I know you can do it, after all we watched the cloud of dust settle after you passed on the Martian :thumbsup2 No worries keep the BQ chanting going :cheer2:

Jackie... I used to notice the hip/leg issues even walking the corgi who can also pull. They pull, it throws you off your natural stride/gait at least that is the story I'm going with  Don't get me wrong, Keely will pull tonight while running in the beginning but as long as she stays centered in front of me it's tolerable. Sunday she was off on my left constantly.

BouncelikeaTigger... Congrats on the Wine&Dine!!! :cheer2:

Diane - Just so you know, that 3-miler is faster than I have run most of this year. (Not ot imply tha tbeign faster than me means greatness, or anything) Way to go!!!!!!! You are doing awesome!!! I am just thrilled for your progress this year. Maybe you could come whip my butt into shape at Kensington Saturday. ;) Scoot would love it sif someone besides him tried to make me go faster. :rotfl:

Maura - In 2007 or 2008 I did not run for 1.5 weeks before marathon. I did a 20-min run Friday night right before and that was it. I had a horrible flu. Of course, I could not sleep because I was worried about being sick ofr marahthon and becuase I was worried how I would not recover because I was not sleeping. :upsidedow I felt amazing!!! While I didn't set any records due to teh awful heat, I know the time off did wonders for my legs. Hang in there!!! :wizard::wizard:

Kristy - Welcome to WISH!!!!! Wow very ambitous for only 4 months after delivering, but if you have been workign out, only you would know what you can do. Look forward to hearing about your progress!

Beth - Huge congratulations! That is a great race!!! :cool1::cool1:DIsney only requests proof of time if you are sub 2:30 for January half and sub 2:45 for Princes, so I don't think submitting your time will help. Still, you should be darn proud of yourself! Good thinking letting yourself recover from a race. Your base is better than what you need to start training anyway. Hope you are feeling better!

PAtty - COngratulations on teh 9-miler! Thrilled that you weren't sore after!!!!

Jackie - Hilly 10-miler with a sprint at the end? you rock! MAking me feel like a whimp for what I'm going ot post. :rolleyes1

Bounceliketigger - I'm not an expert, but have been passed by many a run-walker! Most like it for both mental and physical aspects. Easier on teh body and you can tell yourself that you only have to run for ___ minutes. Do see a doc on the knees, though!

Had a decent 9-miler this weekend. First decent run at home in a long time. A bit worried about this coming weekend, though. We decided to do 10 this weekend so that we only hav eto do 6-milers while on vacation adn then will do 12 when we get back. Of course, I will be at my parents' Friday mornign, so I'll have to do 10 miles at Kensington. :scared1: (The hills there kill me and I haven't run there since early spring. Oh well. What doesn't kill me......
