Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness.

Have a great month WISHers!

Carrie - Thanks for the encouragements. My time goal is fairly low on the list for me. My Goals are pretty much.
1) Not get seriously injured (a couple of blisters don't count)
2) Finish
3) Finish (with a smile)
4) Not a DLF
Then come my time goals.
5) Finish between 3:30 - 3:45. Given this Fridays Training I think it's possible.

Part of the 3:30 goal is the fact that Disney races require that for the half and I'm hoping to get to Disney (probably in 2013) and would like to be enough quick by then that I can enjoy the race, not worry at all about being swept, take a could of picture. Hopefully something in the 3:00 -3:15 range Or about a 13:00 to 14:00 min mile (before stops).

Thinks have been going pretty well training wise for me. I got a new toy in the mail Wednesday. I bought a Garmin 305. I think it is really going to help with my training. I wore it Wednesday for my 4 1/2 mile walk and then on Friday for my 8 mile long walk. I was able to average a 16:02 mile for my 8 mile walk which is real close to the pace I would like to maintain at the half. I even included a hill again this week. The only down side is I developed a couple of blisters. They both occurred on the edge of where I had placed my moleskin's. I may need to use a bigger piece so it is less likely to shift as I walk.

Life around the house has been hectic. Last Wednesday, mom went into the hospital with an infection and being worn down and last Saturday we transferred her to a nursing home to build her strength back up. She had a stroke about a year and half ago and suffers from moderate Alzheimer. So, I've been trying to get out to the nursing home when I can. She is improving and hopefully will be able to get home soon.

Jeremy WTG on your training and glad it is progressing well. Have fun with your 305. DH loves his. Given my dreadfull sense of pacing, I should probably get my own or use his. Hope your mom improves and is home soon.

So now that my spring training race is over, I am moving on to.....well, probably some funky hybrid of triathlon and pure running.

Remember that we talked about 2010 goals? Well, so far I have met my goal of a sub-2:00 1/2 and also--importantly and knock wood--am staying healthy and injury-free. So that means one of my other goals (BQ qualify) is still on the table. It may be on the edge of the table, but it's still there! I figure I can't slight the run training if I want to maintain a base, so even if I ramp up cycling and swimming (Ha! 2 workouts each), I still want to do 3 runs/week. I'll figure something out!

Here's hoping May is a good month for all WISH'ers (and I am SOOOO glad that college application/selection process is over!)

Maura

Hey WISHers...

Hi Maura!!

Goals for 2010:
Half Marathon time of 2:45 or maybe even 2:44!!
Loose more weight (would like to loose about 8 before Disneyland Half)
Do more jogging with my racewalking
Keep injuries/strains/pains away!!

That is what I can think of off the cuff so to speak.

Did an nice 6 miles this morning and summer is showing its ugly head in Southeast Florida. 1:24:56.90 time with an average pace of 14:10. A slow pace for me, but the body needs time to adjust to the heat and humidity.:)

Have a great Sunday all!

Hi Team,

I don't post much, but I do lurk, and just wanted to pop in before May gets away from me and say hello:thumbsup2

Jeremy - Have you tried BodyGlide on your feet? (I can't remember all the past conversations) I literally cake it on my toes and the sides of my feet before anything longer than 3-5 miles. I've still managed a couple of blisters, but nothing like I was getting before I started using it generously. You're going to love the 305. I have the 205; DH has the 305. I even wear mine when we take the dogs for walks. And your goals look great.

Pat - See you Friday!

Maura - Congratulations on finishing the college selection. I just got back from picking up the first load of stuff from DD's freshman year. I can't believe it's over! And good luck working out a training schedule that fits both the running and triathlon needs. It would be a shame not to train for that BQ when you're so close!

Tracy - It's such a shock when that first hot, humid run happens. Ours was last Sunday. I kept thinking "really? already? how many more months of this?" as I was mopping the sweat off my face.

My goals for 2010 (as posted on the Lean Meaners thread in December):

1) Run a 5K without walk breaks.
2) Finish a half marathon in 2:30 or less.
3) Resume workouts with weights and/or Pilates on a regular basis.
4) Entertain the possibility of another marathon and shoot for 5:30 (if I can do this at Disney, then there won't have to be another marathon on the calendar!)

Progress report: I ran a 5K last weekend without walk breaks. I did two half marathons (6 days apart) in March, one in 2:29:15 and one in 2:26:18. I'm doing some weight and core workouts, but not as many as I'd like. And I'm registered for Marine Corps in October, and the friend I'm running with and I both have a goal of 5:15-5:30. My training should have me on pace for close to a 5:00, so I'm leaving room for the inevitable moment when I decide I don't want to run any more!

First off, I want to do a full, but only after my next surgery of the toe joint as now it's bad and will need surgery probably sometime next year. It will be a Disney and that will be my "one and done".

Hey two Half Marathon in 6 days??? You qualify for the Half Fanatics!!! Get signed up and be a Fanatic!! :lmao:

You don't even know...

I had it all worked out. Victory Junction in December, WDW in January, Myrtle Beach in February. 3 Half Marathons in 90 days. Half Fanatics, here I come. Wake up the morning of Myrtle Beach, and it's canceled. :sad2: DH had to listen to me whine for an hour, not because I couldn't run, but because I couldn't join the Fanatics! :rotfl: I had one scheduled in March and May, but hadn't planned to run one in April. Started seriously considering the Flying Pirate in April just to qualify. :rolleyes1

Then... 3 days after Tobacco Road in March, DH and I get this wild idea to run Raleigh Rocks the following weekend. Suddenly, I qualify. But before I can get all my info together, he loses his job and it now seems very irresponsible to spend money to join an online group just so I can add the artwork to my DIS signature!

The good news is that he starts his new job 2 weeks from today, so as soon as the first check comes in...

Jackie

Jackie: Sorry to hear about DH's job. You can still get in on the Fanatics anytime. You only have to list the race series in which you qualified for the status. Doesn't have to be the races you did just now.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Star Wars Day, May the 4th be with you.:lmao:

3 miles today!

Jackie - Congratulations on the 5K without walking. That is one of my goals off in the future. By the way, I was using Sports wax on my feet it helped some, then I had bought some Drymax socks and they recommend not using lubricant. So, now I'm trying to do both. My feet are getting tougher, it's just not going as fast the the rest of my training has progressed.

I'm solidly in taper mode at this point. But, even though my miles have been decreasing, I'm trying to keep the intensity up. On Monday, I did intervals, combining 3 minutes of walking with 1 minute of slow running. Did 8 repititions with a 1/2 mile warm up and cool down each. After Cleveland, I'm hoping to springboard that into a c25k. Right now, I planning on doing the conservative plan on http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/Pr...ve_program.htm starting in month 3 2 days a week combined with the long run in the Marathoning for mortals Walk/Run plan with the goal on being able to run half an hour with at most 1 or 2 walk breaks and do a fall Half Marathon with a walk/run. Does that seem like too ambitious of a goal?

Today, I focused on a steady to improving negative splits for 3 miles of all walking (since I am signed up in the walking division in clevelan). Other than 1 1/2 mile of daydreaming I did very well the split times from my Garmin show
Lap Time Dist Pace
1 00:08:22 0.50 16:45
2 00:07:49 0.50 15:39
3 00:07:39 0.50 15:19
4 00:08:01 0.50 16:02
5 00:07:35 0.50 15:10
6 00:07:23 0.50 14:47
7 00:00:43 0.04 16:11

I have my Garmin set for half mile auto laps because that's what the markings on the trail I walk are so I'm used to looking at half mile times and I gives a decent proxy for current pace (which seems to bounce all over the place on the Garmin). The first half mile was a warmup.

Bringing the thread back to the first page...

Had a great time in Indy last weekend. I don't recommend running a half marathon as a family event, unless it's agreed in advance that everyone runs their own race. We'll know better next time!

Ran 5 miles last night - first time out since the race. Still fighting random pain that moves from the calves to the knees for the first couple of miles, but once I get really warmed up, it eases and I can run comfortably.

Our Galloway training season kickoff is next Saturday - Jeff Galloway will be here and do his regular speech and Q&A session, so it should be lots of fun. Our first official run will be the following weekend, although most of us have been running all winter anyway.

Jackie

Jackie I read your Indy report....I agree--can't imagine running as a family! Good for you to somehow make it work.

SOSO at this end...DS turns 18 today. Bought him a very nice Chocolate Raspberry Mousse Torte as his cake (okay....it's for me too--after all, I did birth this baby!) No presents at this point, though. He has no ideas, and the shirt I ordered him from USC is backordered and didn't get here. Oh well, we seem to do "delayed birthday gratification" in this household.

Finally have some sun today and the weekend looks good.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Maura

Man, the monthly thread has really dropped off in recent months, of course I am as guilty as most.

Anyway, I just got back from my first run with my new Garmin. I have no idea how I trained without it so long. I love being able to glance at my wrist and see what pace I am going.

Count me as one of the converted.

Frank - Welcome to the Garmin world! Can't believe you're so late to the party. I've done a couple of long runs with my group when I've forgotten mine and actually enjoyed them, but otherwise I can't imagine running without it. I'm way too obsessed with knowing exactly what I've done to not have all the data available.

Maura - I like the idea of Mom enjoying the birthday too. We did do the hard part! For DD's 18th birthday, we gave her the ridealong at the Indy driving experience at the WDW Speedway (along with the VIP ride at Test Track, thanks to you!) She told us we'd never ever top that, so we didn't need to try. So we left her at home for her 19th birthday and went to marathon weekend without her...

Actually took today off from running. DH and I are trying to work out a way to get a LR in tomorrow, but his work schedule is really crazy right now. We had our kickoff for the Galloway season, so none of the groups ran today. We just got lots of freebies from the local running stores!

Indy was a great half marathon - highly recommend it to anyone - FLAT course, and the lap around the speedway is a real treat if you're a racing fan of any sort.

Oh yeah - I'm officially a Half Fanatic!

Jackie

Frank Still waiting for my Garmin to arrive (slow boat from Amazon, I guess) Glad you're liking yours.

Jackie Congrats on being a Half Fanatic. I don't think I race enough to get into that. I don't do the volume and don't focus on the distance. Maybe that can be next year's goal.

Well, DD has officially qualified to run the 10k at the NCAA Division III Track & Fiekd Championships, so I'll be heading to Clevelando n Thursday. Too bad the weather will be brutal....we are getting hit with hot summer weather this week.

And I did a nice 10 miler yesterday. The first time my trainin plan didn't specify a pace (not that I know what pace I am running anyway--hence the Garmin), so I just went out and ran easy. Felt pretty good.

And speaking of summer.....I think it's time for a virtual WISH run. So I'm going to post a Summer Solstice run (or bike or whatever form of locomotion you want!)

Maura

Gearing up to begin my DL 1/2 training...went on a long run this morning and had my first (and hopefully my last) fall. I torn the ulnar collateral ligament in my thumb. Not a complete tear, so yea, no surgery and Dr. said I was lucky I didn't break my wrist. Dr. said I can still run.
I did get in around 5 miles and got a ride home from some one-don't really know her, but we see each other around the neighborhood. I'm thankful that that is all I hurt-didn't even skin my knees. Worst part is I'm right handed and it's my right hand-

Joan - Sorry to hear about your fall. Hope you feel better quickly.

Frank and Maura - I've had my garmin about a month now. If you don't have a running log yet, you might want to look at Sport tracks It is alot better than Garmin Training Center, although I'm keeping it on the computer for advanced workouts.

Jackie - Congratulation on making half fanatics.

AFM I've complete my first half marathon 2 weekends ago and a 5k last weekend. Full race reports can be found in the respective race pages. Today, I decided to do a slow recovery walk. I did 3 miles in 52 minutes.

Regarding online training logs, is anyone else using Buckeye Outdoors? Buckeye updated their site last month and you can now download your Garmin runs via Garmin Connect directly into the Buckeye website. Prior to this upgrade, you had to first use Sportracks and then upload into Buckeye. My username is the same on Buckeye as here; geaux_half. Feel free to add me as a friend if you are on Buckeye.

Hi everybody! Just dropping in to say hello. Haven't been on the boards much lately and have done no training since Indy. I had a fun, albeit short, time in Indy. It was great to see everyone. I watcched the indy 500 today and all I could think about was that I did my lap around that track!

Work is getting busy and, of course, we're being hit with budget cuts.
My Mom turned 85 a couple weeks ago and last week fell and broke her wrist.

She's not too mobile and now I have to arrange to have someone with her when I'm at work. We'll find out this week if she has to have surgery. ER doc said he was 95% sure she'll need a steel plate put in. :scared1: My races are on hold right now until we see how she makes out. Any race $$ are now going for her "day" care.

I think I have to make time for training just so I can clear my head and relieve some stress.

Take care and I'll try to check in as much as I can.

Terri
