Month of July - WISH Team Walkers and Runners

Decided to rearrange the schedule a bit since we are expecting rain tomorrow. Instead of gym today long run tomorrow I went with some cycling today, gym tomorrow, long run Thursday.

This is relying a lot on the accuracy of the weatherman. Good thing I was born yesterday and am holding my breath.

Another 8.25 miles, 1:11. I had very little energy or drive in my legs, yet still managed the same time as usual.

I received my refurbished Garmin 405 in the mail today. They replaced my original due to battery charging issues.

Hope you're all logging your miles and reps.

Hello all,

It's been a while since I've posted on the weekly thread. I am signed up to run the 2009 NYC Marathon in November. I have decided to run for Back on My Feet (http://www.backonmyfeet.org), a non-profit based in Philadelphia that supports helping the homeless through a program that involves running. They just added offices in Baltimore and NYC. BOMF was featured in Runners World magazine back in February and is featured in the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer today.

It's a great organization and if you like what they do please donate at: http://www.active.com/donate/backonmyfeetnyc09/rodriguez

Thanks!

Lou

Thanks Kira and Lisa for your donations!

The one think to watch out when changing you stride is landing correctly. Remember that you should still land on the ball of your foot and not the heel.

Ok, I'm confused... I land on the ball of my foot because thru high school I was a sprinter and well that's where you want to be. When I started run/walk I was told to NOT land on the ball of my foot. That it was too much stress over long distances. Landing on my heel (like when walking) feels odd and actually makes me shorten my stride so I'm kinda mid-foot striking.

Is there a right/wrong way? I really do not want to get injured. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Oh and HELLO Everyone!! :wave2:

Is there a right/wrong way? I really do not want to get injured. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have heard of both ways but I think it is far more natural to land on the ball. The exercise physiologist I know concurs. Landing on the heel is pretty jarring to the body. I'm sure there are correct ways to land on the heal. Maybe making sure the knee is slightly bent and it is a fluid motion of heel to ball to toe. I am thinking more of the straight legged thud that the over-padded heals on so many shoes promote.

I was more concerned with someone who does land on the ball of their food, like I do, lengthening their stride and not landing on the ball anymore.

I totally forgot to subscribe to this thread this week. I'm headind to the gym now!

Thanks Frank. Considering if left alone I do land on the ball of my foot maybe I should stop worrying about it so long as it works for me.

Liz,

There was a training article in last months Runner's World. Some talk about foot strike. I think it was in the how to train for a faster 5K article.

Jeff - dont' get that anymore but should be able to find the article on line. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your support. I did just chalk it up to to one of those things that happens and in fact yesterday I was able to get to a longer distance with a better than average pace. So I'm happy.

And I'm rather enjoying this sharing of experiences thing. I'm sure this is probably very addicting (both the running and the reading of these boards.)

Thanks again!

Hey Everyone,

Have not posted for awhile. I'm in week three of training for Disneyland. It's been tough with the heat & humidity, but I'm plowing ahead. Spent the 4th of July at WDW. I have never seen better fireworks than the special 4th show at the MK. All I can say is WOW!!!

I got my running in at the World. I did early it in the morning. Looking forward to a meet with y'all at Disneyland. :cool1:

Went out and did this weeks long run...11.1 miles. It has been perfect night time running weather here. 74 and 49% humidity. I will have to get out and do my weekend run in the sun to start getting ready for the VA Beach half though. I doubt it will be so mild that weekend.

8.25 miles by feet, 1:14. hmm, cruiser run.

14.5 miles by pedal, 1:06. good ride.

Happy Aloha Friday WISHers.

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I've been on the weekly thread as well. I miss being here.

Terri - Yikes! I hope all works out well for you. Here's some pixie dust for your leg/calf :wizard:.

Tracy - I wish I could see what you are talking about. Sounds interesting. I'm not a fast jogger so your technique may not apply to me. Have fun on the bike! I love riding on my road bike.

Kira - welcome back. I just love Europe! Did you take the train from London to Paris? I like going through the chunnel but it makes my traveling buddy nervous. I was in Paris for New Year's Eve this past Dec/Jan. The temp was in the upper 20's. On New Year's day, we got up early to visit some of the museums. I was amazed to see quite a few joggers out in the cold, especially on New Year's morning. Needless to say, I wasn't one of them. Ha!

:welcome: karaeric and wdwprncess77! You'll find lots of great support on these threads. And yes, they can be quite addicting! :p

The weather here in Arkansas has been very hot and muggy. I just haven't been training as much as I would like. I really can't take the heat/humidity well. *sigh* However, an unusual cold front is going to be coming through in the next few days. We are actually going to see low temps in the 60's and highs in the upper 80's. That's cool for this time of year. I'll gladly take it!!!

Although I haven't been training on foot, I have been riding my bike some. We've been doing 30-40 mile bike rides on the weekends. Biking is so much easier for me, especially in the summer. I've discovered that biking helps my long runs but unfortunately, those long runs haven't helped my biking. Ha!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Hey everyone!

I'm in my 3rd week of B2B runs to get ready for Goofy. I'm up to 3/5 and will probably just hang there for awhile since it's so hot right now. That seems like a decent base ( I also run 2 other days weekly) to get started with the Goofy training in Sept.

Diane...you should sooo do the Muddy Buddy next year!

Housekeeping: I'm going to try converting this to a monthly thread since the traffic is kinda low right now. I'm thinkin' we do monthly for a couple months until everyone starts training for WDW in Aug/Sept. What do y'all think? Monthly ok or do you want to stick with weekly?

Hey Mel! Paul (goingthedistance) told me in 2007 to never say never. Too true. I said I'd never do DL again and have and look forward to doing it again someday. I said I'd never do a Marathon and yet can't wait to not only do my 2nd but 1st Goofy. So I figure I'll ask questions and get info and maybe someday I'll do a Muddy Buddy. currently I am not planning on a Tri but will not say "never". They offer up the correct bling and who knows

Congrats Mel on your 3rd B2B!

Tracy! I'm with Susie on this. Your pace in the 9's sounds awesome! it might be for 0.12 now but you are known as Racy for a reason :thumbsup2 You are lifting you knee up more as you are jogging? Trying to get a better visual and then find myself an empty stretch of trail too :thumbsup2

Susie say Hi to Cindy! :goodvibes (wasn't there a smiley that waved?)

Jeff? New photos?

Well I finally broke down and got a new pair of shoes. My old ones are still working but now is a good time to try something new. Plus the new ones are cheaper YAY! If they work then I can afford to have more shoes to rotate thru instead of my single pair.

for now I think I'd be very happy with the monthly so i don't forget to sub to the new week. then as summer fades and we start ramp up the training move back to the weekly.

Checking in with 14 miles done in 2:13. Walked part of Diamond Head with my training partner, who was having a flare up of back pain.

Susie, new photos of what? I've got lots, what do you want to see? (Or you can look in my Facebook albums).

Mel, monthly thread works fine.

Jeff that was me asking! I'll mosey on over to your facebook albums :thumbsup2 Just looking for some pretty ocean views popcorn::

Tracy? I meant to tell you this. A few weeks ago I was finishing up 13.1 (oh yeah, I made it that 0.10 LOL) and I had to pass these guys at the end. So I push as hard as I can (i was tiring quickly) and am walking as fast as i can. I take a peek at my Garmin and it was in the 13's. The thought that crossed my mind was OMG! Tracy WALKS this fast for 13.1! I just remember at that point thinking of your PR time of under 3 and how fast you had to be walking and that I HAVE to add in running to keep it at your walking pace. Keep it up Racey! I can't wait to see you time with this new adjustment your making.

Hey Everyone....
Mel - I think the monthly thread will work fine for now also.

Diane: My 2hr 55min 13.1 included about 2-% of some jogging ehre and there at WDW Princess Half. Esp the "downhills" section and some others here and there, but my wlaking has gotten faster also. Jogger/runners who walk can speed up the walking part if you learn some basic racewalking techniques. Its helps your overall time be faster. No runnin/jogging for me right now as I am suffering some posterior shin splints on my right leg. I am still walking, but has keept the mileage about the same as to not add any right now. Yep, I am hoping to get some more running/jogging in at some point and get to a 2:45 half.

Tracy

Hi WISHers. I started C25K in late January and am now putting in miles in anticpation of starting training for the WDW half. I am registered and looking for a training plan.

When/where can I find WISH merchandise? I saw shirts last year. Are there more available?

Thanks for the info,
Ronda
