Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Started back to back training for Goofy this week. I did 2 miles on Fri, 5 on Sat. I'm also trying Gatorade for the first time ever. I have used water and Gu for the past 3 years or so...thinking maybe having a little bit of electrolytes more frequently rather than a bolus every hour might be a better idea, especially in this weather. Went pretty well...best 5 miler I've had in a long time!

Tricia...welcome back! What's your next race?

MelX3...:welcome: What kind of training program are you using?

Jeff...great time!

Frank...nice race schedule!

Welcome Kara!

Off to the water park with DD6!

Welcome to some new WISHERs!!

Tricia: Nice Picture, so when the next race?? hehe

So yesterday...
I put together my training schedule that gets me to the Spacecoast half in November and then the half in January. I "officially" start 8/16!.
I did 4 miles yesterday morning and then of course I had to try out my new bike!! UPDATE: Ok, so I was told by a few people that my calf issue (and I think knee issue)may be from using too much of the lower legs when jogging. I was told to run more with my butt. ?? Then I had my boss and another runner lady say what they mean is to use more upper leg when running. Think of raising the knees and hitting your butt with your feet, this way I use more upper leg when running. Let me tell you that I am glad there was NO ONE around to see me trying to figure this out this morning. I must have looked very hilarious, however when I looked down at the Garmi I was in the 8s for the short amount of time I was using this "technique". hmmmmm JEFF - I may someday get to be as fast as you!! hahahahaha. Just for only a .12 of a mile here and there, but better now then with my "other" technique. Just very different than racewalking. Racwalking takes pretty much the entire leg, from the hip down to the toes.
So I did a first bike run of 6.66 miles. Nice ride!! - I know 666, but hey that is what Garmi said, so whatcha gonna do?

Today out for 6 slow miles with not running/jogging at all - knee/lower leg is still not 100%. I need to hit Publix and do some :laundy: and check out Lance.

Have a good Sunday everyone!!

Hi all,

Back to business tomorrow for me--back to work and back to the gym. Time to start training for the RFTT in October and then the marathon in January! Yes--I finally signed up.

Did the Muddy Buddy Detroit today. Posted a report on the race thread (haviing trouble linking to it), if you're interested in this kind of race--and who doesn't like something that ends with you crawling on your stomach through a mud pit!

Welcome new WISH'ers and hello to "old" WISH'ers. Time to go eat lunch!

Maura

Hello all,

It's been a while since I've posted on the weekly thread. I am signed up to run the 2009 NYC Marathon in November. I have decided to run for Back on My Feet (http://www.backonmyfeet.org), a non-profit based in Philadelphia that supports helping the homeless through a program that involves running. They just added offices in Baltimore and NYC. BOMF was featured in Runners World magazine back in February and is featured in the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer today.

It's a great organization and if you like what they do please donate at: http://www.active.com/donate/backonmyfeetnyc09/rodriguez

Thanks!

Lou

Greetings!

Today was the Philadelphia Women's Triathlon/Duathlon. Turned our to be a total Duathlon as the storms from last night made the Schuylkill River unswimmable (I wasn't swimming in there anyway!).

Well, I wasn't a DLF and wasn't a DNF, but it was tough. I've had problem with my left calf for the past 2 weeks. Don't know exactly what it is. Started the race and ran about 15 steps and it felt like someone was squeezing my calf. Running was out. I walked both run segments, but I finished. Was hoping to better my time from last year, but was about 12 minutes slower (last year I had mechanichal issues on the bike). I think I may be cursed in this race :confused3.

Got a nice little piece of bling to add to the collection. Gonna have the Dr. check out the leg tomorrow. I have the Maui 1/2 in 2 months and can't afford any prolonged down time.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Terri

Hi Everyone....I'm new to running. Doing the couch to 5K program and am on week 7. So far, I love running and completely understand now why people do this. I'm not a big exerciser...I'm pooh sized (but hope to be a little smaller soon)and just wanted a challenge that could help me get a bit healthier.

I would love to be part of a team. I don't know anyone who runs to ask questions to. For instance, today I was on day 3 of week 7 (so a 25 minute run). This is my fourth time in a week running this 25 minutes and I just ran out of steam halfway through. So disappointing. I tried walking a bit and tried to pick up and run again. I just couldn't get back in the game. What do you do to keep you going? It wasn't injury or anything...just don't know why I couldn't keep going. Any suggestions?

Hi all-

Thanks for all of the warm welcomes! And welcome to WDWPrncess77. I am also training for the first event, and I just finished week 7 of my training plan. I would say we all have those days that just feel junky...I know I have. For me, the shorter I go, the harder it is for me. The longer I go, the better I feel...go figure.

Anyway, as a catch up, I did 7.4 miles yesterday in 1hr 41 min, and DH did 6 miles in just over 54 minutes. I felt really good, DH said he felt not so hot and was suppose to go 7 miles but cut it short. I say he didn't feul and hydrate well enough before he went out, :upsidedow.

Anyway, hope your weekends have been nice. What does everyone do for their cross training day? I've been taking a pilates/yoga class that goes 90 minutes...

14 miles, 2:05. Wogged miles 12-13 due to the heat. Got it done :thumbsup2.

Have a great Sunday everyone.

Not ready yet Jeff, but I'm sure working on it!! I do feel like I'll be ready by race day.

Hello everyone!

I got back from Europe at the end of last week, but today is the first day I really feel "back" - finally have recovered from jet lag enough to feel like a complete human being again!

I didn't end up completing my goal of running once in London and once in Paris. I did go for a run in London, but my back was hurting me so much (probably from all the walking I was doing in inadequate shoes), that it ended up being mostly a walk. It was lovely though - I got to explore Regent's Park in the early morning, and it is a truly beautiful spot to run.

In Paris I switched to more sensible shoes, and did tons of walking (including the 300 steps to the top of Sacre Coeur Basilica in Montmatre, rewarded by the best view in Paris!), but decided against trying another run.

It was a wonderful trip - good food, beautiful sights, amazing art, wonderful shopping, lots of walking and exploring. My kids were great, and tried lots of new things. I want to go back again someday soon!

Today is my first day back to real training, and I'm really resisting it! I'd appreciate a good backside kick to make sure I get out there this afternoon - thanks!

Terri Sorry the race didn't work out as planned, but great for you to stick it out and finish--that's probably even a harder thing to do.

wdwprncess77 Some runs don't go well. Could be fatigue, hydration, fuel, your favorite sports team just lost another game (okay, the last one is a bit of a stretch!). Plus, you're just ramping up and running 4x in a week is a lot to ask of a body. Just chalk it up to "one of those things" and try not to worry about it.

Kara For XT, I have been swimming and biking (since I just did a tri), but now looking to get back to some more weight training (upper body--those race photos of my arms kill me!) and probably stick to biking. Pilates is great, I should really find a time at the gym where they have a class I can do. But I'm an early a.m. exerciser and not inclined to go there after work (okay--I never go after work!)

Kira Sounds like a great trip. I've also done the steps up Sacre Coeur--but a long time ago! Now get out there and RUN!

Jeff :wave2: You work horse, you! You always get it done, and I always picture you smiling!

MAURA! You have GOT to be kidding me!?!?!?! Now I'm annoyed! I was THERE!!!!!!!! i was looking at everyone wondering if I'd see a WISH shirt but thought naaa. Not that many of us on this side. I was there with Susan and Cathy doing 9 miles yesterday but we stopped in to watch but were a few people back from the rope in front of the mud pit as you crawled toward the crowd. We arrived around 9:18 am was when I looked at the Garmin as we were approaching the parking lot. DRAT!!!!! I WISH i had checked the race list!!!!

I actually DID part of the course on Friday. I have photos of me 'doing' the hurdles which were MUCH nicer than the Everest hurdles. DH and I walked the bike/hike trail that day and took photos of the obstacles. :)

I need to check out your upcoming race schedule!

Diane This was a very last minute decision--4pm on Saturday! And I would NEVER wear my WISH shirt knowing that it could get trashed in the mud (although everything I had on pretty much washed clean). Our wave started at 8:42 and we would have finished at about 9:30. And I can say that I wasn't focused at all on the crowd as I made my way through the pit!

Anyway, next year YOU can do it.;)

Maura

Thanks Maura. The walks were tough, since it was more of a walk/limp. The
5K portion took me almost an hour. :sad2:

Saw the Dr. tonight. Now I have to get x-rays done and test to make sure it's not a DVT (blood clot). I'm not a happy camper!:sad2:

Kira- Glad you had a great trip!

Terri

Lou- There was a feature in Runner's World on a program that sounds a lot like yours. I think it was in Phily so it may be the same one.

wdeprincess77- Bad runs happen, shake it off and chalk it up to just putting in the miles. It happens to everyone.

Tracey - I actually know exactly what you are talking about because I used to, and sometimes fall back into, doing the same thing. Basically what happens when you use too much lower leg is rely on your hamstring to propel you forward by keeping your thigh too stationary. This results not only in the smaller hamstring doing more work but in a shorter stride. By using your butt you are propelling yourself farther forward and sharing more of the work you hamstring is doing with you Gluteus Maximus. The one thing to watch out when changing you stride is landing correctly. Remember that you should still land on the ball of your foot and not the heel. A good technique I have found for figuring out your natural footfall is go run down the sidewalk a few steps barefoot. Your foot will naturally land the way it should and not the way our over padded shoes have conditioned us to.

I went out and did 6.4 tonight. I did the same route I did last Monday and shaved over a minute off. My weekly long run is getting close to half marathon territory in preparation for getting it up to marathon distance. Kind of scary.

Hey just popping in to say hi.

We are having some pretty crumby summer weather here. Temps would be awesome for training but we are getting so much rain. I hope this precip doesn't carry into the winter months or snow and my trying to get to disney in January is not a good combo.

Hope everyone is having a great week!!!!
