Month of January 2010 - WISH Team Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Vicky, You make me feel like a wimp for complaining about 25 degree weather.

Watched my students basketball game and then headed to the gym. Only did 7.25 miles on the treadmill (1 hour; 8:20 ish pace) instead of the 9 I had planned/scheduled. I can't handle more than an hour on the treadmill most days.

In fun Disney news, I just booked POFQ for 2011 marathon weekend. I'll be there from Friday-Monday, which means this year I'll make it to the POP meet.

Best,
Jennifer

Hello all. We have had a little cold snap go through. I debated going out last night into the 6 degree weather but decided to hit the treadmill instead. I should have just gone out but oh well. We are supposed to sky rocket into the high teens or low twenties tomorrow so I am going to hit the road and then go meet some people at a local ski resort to do anything other than ski.

I ended up doing some weights today and then went back into the pool to attempt to get better at swimming. I worked on some stuff and while I still suck pretty horribly I was a little better then I was.

Hope everyone's winter running is going well, inside or out.

Hi all, This is my first month of following a training schedule for running a half marathon (I'm using the 2009 WDW half marathon schedule I found online). I started with easy training on week one, my goal is to move up to intermediate on March first and up to hard on June 2nd exactly 15 weeks before the Wine & Dine Half that I signed up for. Today I ran inside on a track for 3 miles, I have never ran that much at one time before and it felt good. I'm looking forward to the Wine & Dine half in October and I just learned about the Air Force Marathon in Dayton OH in September, I am thinking about doing that one. I was in the AF for 10 years and it couldbe fun to do with all the airplanes around. They even have a plane that I worked on for 3 years at the Air Force Museum annex.

Hi all,
I'm new to the board and new to training for a half marathon. I am planning to run the Wine and Dine half in the fall and am probably being way over-anxious in my training. I've never run farther than a 10K race before and right now I am running about 15 miles/wk with long runs of 4 miles. I've been trying to add a mile a month to my long run, but I don't want to peak too soon. Any suggestions for training schedules?

Frank I know what you mean about the cold snap. I live about 1/2 way between Columbus and Cleveland and our overnight low was 0.

I just got back from my long walk. The temp rebounded to the mid 20's. I did the 4 miles without too much trouble. The 1 thing I forgot to do is transfer my gel insoles to my new running shoes and the bottom of my feet notice the difference. I may also need to get some bodyglide as the miles increase. I had looked at the sporting goods store yesterday and and saw the bodyglide and a product called "sportswax". Has anyone used sportswax to know how it compares to bodyglide. I was alot cheaper than the bodyglide.

Hi everyone! Jan 31 already! Well, I got out and ran my 11 miles. It was slower than previous LRs but I didn't feel like my heart was in it. But I still got it done so I'm happy.

Debra/Jennifer - The cold weather is just one of the unfortunate things about Canada. I looked at my training plan and every weekend in February alternates between 13 and 15 miles :scared1: So cold or not I think I'll have to be out there.

2badgermom - I used Hal Higdon's plans as well. But I used the intermediate version since it included some speed training. I did tweek it slightly so that I ran the 12 miles about 2 weeks before the race instead of a week before. Good luck!

I am definitely feeling better about my weather already. I had temps right at freezing when I started with my local running club this morning, but it was definitely much better than the weather at Disney a few weeks back. :rotfl: Plus today there was a nice warm Starbucks waiting for me at the end.
The only downside was that my plans to pick up my pacing fell short when a lagging runner needed someone to stay with them, but it was still a solid recovery run pace--which is more what I should have been running at anyway.

Wow.... January 2010 is already in the books  My Buckeye Outdoors January report:
Running Summary
Runs: 11
Avg. Time: 01:09:06
Total Time: 12:40:08
Avg. Speed: 6.2 MPH
Avg. Mi Pace: 9:40
Avg. Dist.: 7.1 Mi
Total Dist.: 78.6 Mi
Avg. Cal. Burned: 627.6
Total Cal. Burned: 5648

My 78.6 miles total distance is split evenly between training miles and my 39.3 Goofy Marathon weekend race miles.

Thanks for the schedule links and the good wishes. I have a place to start now. (And something to calm me down!)
Sandy

johde - spotwax is great. You can get sample sizes too that are great for carrying on the ocurse, just in case. Works great as chapstick in an emergency. :rotfl: Plus, made in MI. Anything you could do to help our awful economy is greatly appreciated. :flower3: (No, I don't work for them ;) )

grandma - Welcome! I think you have a great plan!

airman & 2badgermom - Welcome to WISH!

Debra - lol. I was thinkign yesterday. WOndering what i need to do to get my pace back. In order to run faster, you must run faster. Yup, one of my faves.

Vicky - You do that stuff on your own? No leader has to force you? :rotfl: You rock!

Tracy - :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Hope you had fun yesterday adn it helps get you back in the swing of things. :grouphug:

I was much better after core conversion this week. My dh went ofr his first time, though. He jsut kept apologizing for not givng me the sympathy I deserved last week. :rotfl: Poor guy.

I hope everyone doesn't mind me going off-topic for a minute, but...
the Monday Mixer Thread has been revived as a weekly discussion on the WISH Events Board and all are welcome to join in. Today's topic of the Monday Mixer is "What is the Best Ice Cream Treat on WDW Property?" Pictures, stories and off-topic comments are welcome.

Feel free to come on over!

I'm going to go off topic too, with a question I hope (know) someone here can answer...

When starting a training schedule, do I start with week one mileage even if I am currently doing more than week one calls for? Or do I start it at week XX that my mileage is at?

Did I say that right? I hope someone understands what I'm trying to ask and can help me out!

TIA

Angie - If you feel like you need a break, start on week one. If not, start where the plan merges with what you are doing now. Or, maybe start a week early to give yourself a little break. HTH! That's what we do now.

Did 30 min on the trainer. Backed teh tension off and theat helped a lot. Still, not a joy but MUCH better than last week.
