Monte Cristo!

I'm planning my first trip to Disneyland for this September. I have some friends that go annually, and I have been asking their advice.

Their one recommendation for dining in DL is the Monte Cristo at Blue Bayou. I do want to eat there, and plan on getting the Fantasmic! dinner dining package for one of my three days at DLR. But!...the Monte Cristo is not on the dinner menu.

But Café Orleans does have a Monte Cristo on their menu. Hmmm, might be good for lunch one day.

My question is, do BB and CO share a kitchen? And are the two Monte Cristos comparable?

Many people really seem to like the Monte Cristo's but I found them to be the worst thing I have ever eaten at DLR - in fact I let half of it on my plate.
For me it was a luke warm lump of congealed cheese between two slices of hardened lard soaked bread.
We try to avoid fatty foods and eat healthy and it was a disappointment.
YMMV!

To answer the question:

Yes, the two Monte Cristros are identical. Except for the price.

Still love the Monte Cristo. I remember the first time I had it at Blue Bayou back around 2000-2001. I fell in love with it then. It has changed some since then, but it is still good. You can definitely share with someone. As good as it is, it can get old really quick if you are trying to eat all of the serving.

We tried it for the first time this year.. and although I liked it.. I had to leave most of it... its very very rich.. I would get it from CO rather than BB.. the cost factor makes me eat there for that...
and we share it...
after one slice . you need something to cut the oily taste so we get a salad with a vinaigrette.. you need the acid to cut the fat

I always laugh at the guests that order a Monte Cristo and then stare at it when it arrives because they had no idea what it was...that it was battered...and deep-fried. Have seen some ask to send it back. The basic Monte Cristo (ham and cheese, all cheese, etc.) is a hundred-year-old recipe has been a culinary dinosaur since health food came into fashion in the '80's, so few people are familiar with them anymore.

BB and CO offer the same "traditional" Monte Cristo (Turkey, Ham and Swiss)...but the CO also offers a Three-Cheese Monte Cristo as well.

I can't do Monte Cristos anymore. They are way, way too heavy for me and a bad choice for a park food for me, I want efficient fuel/energy to keep hopping rides. Are they yummy? Absolutely! But, in my 40's, I have to eat my sandwiches and donuts separately.

yeah the Monte Cristo at café new Orleans is a lot cheaper! get it there your wallet will appreciate it more.

Doesn't the Monte Cristo at BB come with some additional sides? A fruit skewer and a salad/gumbo. That made the $8 price increase sound more palatable to me - especially since we will be sharing.

The Monte Cristo was always my OMG I am dreaming of a disney food item meal. Sadly during our trip this past April I was very disappointed by it. It might have been an off day for the cook but if they have changed how they make it then I don't think I would be having it again, will have to see during our next trip.

I had mine at Cafe Orleans and as has been stated BB and cafe Orleans do share a kitchen.

The first time I had it at BB, I was pretty disappointed. By the whole experience, actually, though from what I understand, my experience was in the minority, as people love it. That was several years ago. On a recent solo trip, I had the urge to try it again and the pommes frites at CO (which I've never been to before). It was magnificent, delicious, a cheesy, savory sandwich and a sugar and berry-laden donut gave birth to the Monte Cristo. It was alive with flavors and textures, and was utterly mind-blowing. I somehow managed to eat the majority of that beast, though I left most of the fries (which were also excellent, but my stomach only had so much room!)

I've just started the Whole30 dietary guidelines (similar to Paleo) and I will probably never eat it again, knowing what stuff like that is doing to my body, but I will always have my memories to look back on fondly.

Just my two cents on the Monte Cristo!

The experience at the Blue Bayou was incredible. Well worth doing once; it was the most magical dining location we've seen in either of the parks (close second goes to Flo's).

We didn't care for the Monte Cristo, although it was prepared well. It was just too heavy for us, though we may have enjoyed it if we were more in the mood for comfort food. I don't think there is any way any of us could finish one on our own, but you can also request a share plate with any dish at the BB, which costs something like $9, and lets two people share an entrée (the $9 adds a second salad).

There were a number of other great options on the menu of both the BB and the CO. We love many of the dishes one both menus, and many of them are much lighter than the epic Monte Cristo.

My niece and I love the three cheese Monte Cristo at CO! We split it and still don't finish it, but it sure is yummy!! Gotta have the fries too!!

I never turn down a Monte Cristo. DL's is great. Bennigan's actually had what I considered the best.....kind of scary.

I always go to CO. Cheaper and the same thing.

I'm with you on that, it was always exceptionally hard to find a Bennigans also (prior to them going bankrupt originally). I always was able to get my Monte Cristo fix when we visited DLR though!

My fiance and I tried one for the first time a couple of months ago. He wasn't expecting it to be so sweet. He said "what is this, I ordered dinner, not dessert!" We both ate it and it was okay, but I don't really like sweet and savory together in the same meal, and apparently neither does the fiance.

Love the Monte Cristo! I've only had it at CO, there are too many nicer options at BB to pick from. Also, save a few bucks by getting it at CO! That's how we do it, we eat other things at BB & Monte Cristos at CO.

I love the monte cristos but sharing them is a must as it is a really heavy meal. I don't care for the sugar and berry stuff on it so I have them leave it off. I like to dip mine in ketchup, the vinegar in the ketchup adds a nice savory touch. Hubby likes mustard on his sometimes.

Yes. The two sandwiches are the same, but BB's is a meal (or it was last I got it) and CO's is sandwich only. I can share a Monte Cristo with my dd's and we're all full. That's 4 of us sharing one sandwich! That's how rich it is. It is conveniently cut into four triangles

I should mention that the sides are not that substantial. A small cup of gumbo or side salad, and then a fruit skewer that had a couple of berries and I think grapes on it. I would not consider the sides worth an extra $8, but that's of course subjective.
