Monte Cristo Sandwich-- to try it or not?

Monte Cristo: To Die For, or Over my Dead Body?

  • Never tried it, but would like to.

  • There is no way you'd ever get me to try that monstrosity of grease.

  • Hated it.

  • Didn't really care for it.

  • Meh-- it was ok.

  • Liked it.

  • Loved it.

  • You'll have to pry it from my cold dead fingers-- yes, it's THAT good.

So, what do you think about it? There was some discussion about this over on the Blue Bayou thread, and I thought maybe it was time to post this poll again. I did so last year because I thought maybe I'd try the Monte Cristo (also known as the Monte Crisco :rotfl:) and I wanted to know what others thought of it. I was surprised then how many different opinions there were about it! So, if you're wondering whether to try this delicacy (available all day at Cafe Orleans, or at Blue Bayou for lunch) read on...

I think its something you need to be prepared for going in. I think most people don't realise just how heavy the thing just might be. Personally I put my vote in for not having tried it, and won't. I am just not capable of eating that amount of fried cheese and bread in any way even at Disneyland.

Never tried it, but from pictures and reviews, it sounds like a splurger's best friend.

Only appropriate at DL! :lmao:

Yummmm, this thread actually made me hungry for one. Then I realized I didn't have one, and so I became sad :(

And we wonder why the population is overweight.........................

Oh no, I couldn't eat that. That thing would make me sick, even if I didn't have terrible stomach problems, I think it would make me sick. LOL

I will try almost anything once if it is with in my dietary limitations. I never got around to eating one and they are not gluten free. Sound yummy and if you find me a gluten/soy free version I am willing to eat one.

Last December I ordered one from Cafe Orleans and was disappointed in it. What I got was a gooey, dense, grease-sodden sandwich. The overgreased, squishy bread got in the way of flavors from the ham, jam and cheese.

It was 'nas. But I bet it'd be good treatment for constipation. :rolleyes1

Sounds yucky to me. But then I don't like ham or swiss either. I think I'd rather spend the calories somewhere else. :rotfl:

I thought it sounded pretty bad -- but I had to try it because so many people raved about it. I LOVED IT! It is VERY filling, DH and I could easily split it, but he won't even try it! :)

I never ever thought I would order one of these or even try one because of the grease, calories, fat, etc. The idea of it just kind of grossed me out. Plus, I like to eat light at Disneyland or I get bad tummy issues.

But, during a Dis Diva meet last Oct., I had a bite of someone's, and I fell IN LOVE! Oh my goodness, YUM! Now I could never eat a whole plate of it, but I would happily share with a friend or relative as a splurge meal. Heck, it can't be much worse calorie-wise than the fried chicken plate at Plaza Inn or the chicken fussilli at Pizza Port.

Anyway, I'm a convert! :) I say try it, but just don't try to eat the whole thing.

Took one bite and that was it. Did not like the greasy stuff and god only knows how many calories it has. Would rather splurge on something chocolate.

So yes, I did try it on our October trip, with some trepidations. Maybe I got lucky, but it was soooo good! DD and I shared one at Cafe Orleans, and we had very good, fast service that evening-- so when we got it, it was very fresh and hot. I can understand that it might not be good when it's not hot, but the cheese was very melty, and it didn't seem greasy; though like many foods, by the end of the meal it had cooled somewhat and seemed greasier. DD ate one triangle, and I ate two, and that was plenty!

Here's a picture, in all its glory (Pommes Frites on the side, also YUM!)

Curiosity got's me! I'm trying one! Does anyone know if the sandwich at Blue Bayou is the same as the one at Cafe Orleans? How about the cost?

Yes, sandwhich is the same (CO and BB share a kitchen) but the price is cheaper at CO.

I voted that I liked it which was sort of splitting the difference between "love it" and "won't eat the entire thing myself". If that makes any kind of weird sense. ;)

I am at my ideal weight and stay in shape. Up at 7 each morning to work out for an hour...and I LOVE the MC!!! I eat one every trip!

As much as I love them now, they used to be much better. I was sorely disappointed when I tried one in december...was a let down because I had remembered them being amazing and it was good...not as great. This time around I will go into knowing already that it isn't as tastey as before. Still a GREAT sandwich!

I voted "Loved" it.

It is a delicious treat (like a lot of things in Disneyland...churros, caramel apples, corn dogs, etc.)

I can only eat half. DH and I split it because it is so rich our tummy's cannot take much more than that. But, I do enjoy every bite.:lovestruc

We try very hard everyday to eat healthy, but a Monte Cristo at DL is a big SPLURGE!

This would never be something that we eat on a regular basis - but we thoroughly enjoy eating it on our trips to Disneyland.
