Monorail through Swan/Dolphin?

Overheard someone on Disney transportation today talking about "the plugs" in the Swan/Dolphin and how the monorail was/is intended to go through these hotels. I couldn't believe my (mickey mouse) ears. When we exited the bus at the Swan (heading to the Board Walk) we had to admit the dark parts of the Swan and Dolphin, "the plugs", were at the right height and in the right positions to accommodate a monorail. Is this a valid rumor or was it once a real plan? I had no idea!

Just another big load of s_ _ _ . That silly rumor has been around since the dawn of mankind.........almost. ;)

Two things to consider next time you look at these two LARGE areas on the buildings.
1. Look at just how large the areas are. Would you be willing to give up such a large area of rooms? Would the buildings be able to stand without these areas. And look how HIGH up these are, much higher than the Contemporary.
2. Look how thin the building is where the monorail would have been. The monorail would be sticking out on each end. And would it stop in each building? or would there have been an outdoor boarding area between both building to service both?
When you step back and look at it logically, it really doesn't make sense.

It is a signature of all buildings done by the architect; Michael Graves I believe.

Michael Graves has also designed many buildings that do not have large black squares on them. Michael Graves tends to break up large, flat surfaces in one way of another. The black squares are just one way in which he has done so.

For more about the architecture of Michael Graves & Associates, see http://www.michaelgraves.com/mga.htm

Let's start a rumor that the following San Diego-area hotel will soon have three monorail beams running through it: http://lajolla.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp

back in 1998 a bus driver sold me this bill of goods too

that and they were about to announce a Sports theme park

Perhaps he was thinking of the Wide World of Sports Complex, and forgot they already built it? :)

I want a monorail to the DHS! And why would Disney put a monorail through a resort that isn't owned by them?

I'd guess just about all of us would love to see monorail expansion to anywhere and everywhere. I would think this will never happen barring a sheik buying out Disney and deciding he wants to build it up. Actually that could be very cool. :earsboy:

When the Swan and Dolphin were built, part of the lease agreement stated that they would be included in the Disney transportation system. According to some sources, Tishman Hotel Corp., which owns the Swan and Dolphin, thought that would mean inclusion on the monorail line, which at the time was expected to be expanded to Lake Buena Vista Village (now DTD) and out to the airport. This doesn't mean to say that the hotels were built to have monorail stations. They weren't. But in a little bit of corporate maneuvering, Michael Eisner fulfilled the transportation clause not with a monorail, but by providing boat and bus service to the hotels instead. This apparently has never really sat well with Tishman, but there's really nothing they can do about it. :)

you saved me from breaking out my 20 min rant.

They'd have to change the name to Dubai World.

could you imagine a monorail from the airport? Absolute Heaven!

Disney seriously considered that. The theory being that Disney doesn't want any guest to be "off property" for a moment. But the cost would have been astonomical w/o even comtemplating the requirements from the governmental bodies

So, now you have a bus system

Yes, I couldn't even begin to fathom the cost of running that monorail all the way to MCO! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

actually the right of ways and the permits are already in place, it was done with the state as part of the deal to create ready creek improvement district... it was just never cost effective, and the ROI was like 70 something years.

I believe they wanted the light rail system thay was heavily debated in Central Florida to run that route. They never intended to do it on their own, they just supported it.
