Both lines down, had to take bus to ttc from Epcot. Got on monorail there for BLT and they made us get off at GF b/can another monorail was stuck ahead of us at MK. Finally got a bus from there to Contemporary. Not a good Disney transportation night but people were being good sports about it.

Sounds like a pain. Glad that you were able to get back safely and that people were still in good spirits after all the hassle.

My son and his wife were also caught in that. Made for a late night but as you say, people were being pretty understanding.

Just another sign that the monorails need a major overhaul...

I briefly considered it lol(JK, in case anyone takes it seriously) But if Disney is going to charge a premium for monorail resorts, it's good to actually HAVE a monorail....;)

One of the reasons I've not jumped up and gotten a monorail resort is the history of breakdown on the monorail. The thing is old and seems to breakdown from time to time. Not a huge surprise considering it's age but I sure don't want to be at a resort I paid a lot more for and not have the main feature available. We had a 6 day trip in Sept 11 and encountered several times the monorail was out. Once we got caught on it and were stuck for what at the time seemed like a long time. It likely wasn't more than 15 min but stuck on a monorail it's an eternity.

Just curious, is the problem with the monorail vehicles or is it a problem with the infrastructure(rails, technology, etc.)?

Christmas week the cm told us the breakdown was bc of the train. They had to take one off completely, which for the record takes a looooong time. This was resort loop.

So it's safe to say that whole "let's rest the monorail more" plan didn't quite pay off? ;)

This is what happened when we got stuck on the train. They had to take one off. At least that's what they told us.

We have been lucky and never experienced a breakdown on any of our trips. Glad you were able to get back safely and that everyone was pretty good about it. With the age of the trains, it really amazes me they run as well as they do. Hopefully an upgrade is in the planning stages. I wonder if moving to a new model train would mean changing the existing infrastructure or if they could use the existing track system? While expensive, if it was just upgrading the trains one would think it is in Disney's best interest. If it means rebuilding the track(s) and such, we may never see it. I do enjoy riding the monorail though.

Wouldn't it have been awesome if they'd taken the millions of dollars sunk into NextGen and invested in improving the transportation infrastructure instead? I can't help but think it would have made for a lot of happy guests.

There are so many people especially those with young children/strollers that often choose the monorail resorts just for the transport....another reminder that monorails break down too...and its also no fun when they do ;)
I think we've seen it all...monorail breakdowns while your sitting there between stops  for 20 minutes...or bus rides where the bus breaks down and your waiting for a new bus  to com and transfer you...or waiting while 2-3 buses get filled up before you can even get on,,,,etc etc...
All I know is....its DISNEY, so Id rather be in the midst of that then in work traffic at home :rotfl:
