Monorail evacuation

The monorail shut down about 6:30 p.m. during stormy weather, but Disney employees were able to restart several other trains that were on the system and return them to stations, said Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger.

Unfortunately, Disney has had to give the press the Finger a lot this week.:rotfl2:

I've never really paid much attention to the roof hatch in the monorail, but I think the next time I ride it, I should make sure that it is indeed large enough for me to get my fat backside through it in case of a lightning strike lol.

It's another thing you don't have to worry about. this is a rare case, normally they just tow the whole train into the station. they have a special service tug that is selfpowered (diesel) that is used to move stuck, powered down m-rails around.

they get the people down that they can though the hatch, and over the noise, there is a rope that is kept in the cockpit to do that. but everyone that would not be safe doing it, they get out with the lift platform, Reedy Creek FD has a special high lift one to get to the mrail.

I'm 450 lbs and VERY afraid of heights. I would have probably chosen door #3 and sat in the sauna for a couple hours. There is no way in hell I would have been squeezing through any hatches or climbing onto any fire baskets or using any harnesses. Sorry, but this big man doesn't play those games.

They would have to do some type of "Mr. T getting knocked out before flying on A-Team" trick on me to get me out of there because I would have never willingly done any of the things you are saying. Even if I was in the car that had the stairs...uh, nope. Not happening. I would have asked for some cold bottles of water and would have filled up my spray fan as many times as it took. My wife and 6 yo could go no problem. Not me. Nope. :wave2:

Has anyone heard if the EPCOT monorail has opened back up since the incident yesterday? One of my family members said they heard on the news that it might be closed for a while, but the news outlets around here tend to blow things out of proportion and get things wrong a lot.

My understanding is at least some guests were stuck for 90 minutes with no AC and were repeatedly instructed not to open the hatches.

:scared1::scared1:

Oh, my God... I hate when that thing stops for 20 seconds.
If that was me, I would have gone nuts in there. The headline might be a lot different.

According to what one guest said in a CNN article, they got free park passes. Nice to see that Disney still does the right thing sometimes.

Interesting that they are saying that lightning was not the cause. And what's up with this characterization of the teen?:

As a teenager who basically lives at Disney World, Lily Mock has been on virtually every ride at the Florida amusement park....
And for a teen who visits Disney World at least three times a year, the experience was actually pretty cool.

Three times? That's a slow week for a lot of people who "basically live at Disney World". :rotfl:

Yep using having an AP, and visiting 3-4 times per year for 5-9 days each time as your metric. I "Basically live at WDW" too. I even own DVC (whcih means I pay property tax there) so it's even more true. ;)

It says free passes, not free admission to the parks, which is consistent with what a person who gave us a first hand report said about getting 21 fastpasses.

I wouldn't have been calm and happy. I don't ride the monorail except for a one stop trip to the contemporary or from the GF.

DM and I got stuck on the EPCOT line monorail for about 45 minutes once. Even in November, it gets HOT in there. I can't even imagine being stuck in that sauna in July along with feeling extremely trapped and claustrophobic, and then having the energy to climb out the hatch and down a huge flight of stairs. I would need to borrow some of that Valium and Xanax myself. :)

On a funny note, when we were stuck there was no singing, and there were definitely no Mickey heads being drawn in condensation. Instead, a man wrote "HELP US!" on his window!!!
